I have a tourney tonight. I was thinking about switching up some of the blinds primarily to see if the game will play out smoother towards the end. Experiments for continuous improvement FTW!

The change from BG's gold standard tourney structure would be to color up the $100s one level sooner, as well as use the opportunity to color up the $500s at the same time.

It just feels to me at the end of my tourneys, there are $500 chips idle on the table they take time to count out when people jam etc. Same goes for the $100 towards the end before their color up. Its annoying. It seems like all we end up using is the $1000 and $5000 chips anyway.

So what do you guys think about this? My main question is about level 13, how much to change the SB by. Make it $1000 or $2000? Thoughts? Thanks.

Original BG structure (first time I've actually noticed the smaller % increase in blinds during level 13):

New structure (original BB structure is left unchanged):

I guess the choice comes down to jumping the SB 100% in level 13 and 0% in level 14, or 0% in level 13 with 100% in level 14.

My gut says defer the bump to level 14 to allow for more game play for my players during level 13. If I recall correctly from our last game, during level 11, we had a couple of players bust out in one go and we were down to 4 players from 9. Allowing for some more game play for ~4 players and then putting more pressure on a headsup game at end the evening I think is better. We always play our tourneys on weekday nights so I dont want it to drag on (especially if I bust out early, then I'm stuck dealing LOL!)

I think I will make the blinds $1,000 / $3,000 in level 13 and $2,000 / $4,000 in level 14. Any other affects on the game I'm not thinking about?

Use your brain: what do you think the overall effect will be of replacing 1200/2400 and 1500/3000 blind levels with 1000/2000 and 1000/3000 levels? Hint: take a hard look at those numbers.

Any realistic chance that any of these things happen if you do so?
  • the game will play out smoother towards the end
  • allow for more game play for my players during level 13
  • allowing for some more game play for ~4 players
  • putting more pressure on a headsup game at end the evening
  • I dont want it to drag on
My guess is zero of those things occur. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Wondering how your tourney went and which route did you take with level 13?

Also, is it pretty much the standard to do 15 minute blinds? The weekly home game I go to has it set up for 20 minute blinds but I believe the level increases are a lot higher at each level.

I used the new structure and it worked great! No real change in gameplay except that we were heads up at level 12 and the simple blinds were much easier vs level 11. Level 11 was a bit of a pita because the game was moving so fast, we were headsup and self shuffling, dealing, and we had to count out blinds using 4 chips for the SB.

I will definitely use this new structure again. Its my new go-to.
