Paulson color sample drilled holes (1 Viewer)

Why do my Paulson color samples have holes drilled into them? I could see if it had value at one time and the casino wanted to make them obsolete but these are just samples?

I think the sales reps carried them around on a ... chain, I guess you'd call it? Like one of those metal string things they use to attach pens to the counter at the bank.
