Let's Talk Casablanca . (1 Viewer)

In my experience textured inlays are almost directly correlated to lead with the exception of California chips from the 90's
Which makes me wonder if lead is even the part we all love. Wouldn’t be surprised if the new chips are just a different formula because those old school Cali chips, that should technically be outside of the lead era, still have that same feel.

FWIW, I’ve come to the conclusion that I love Paulson factory textured inlays at least as much as I love the feel of lead clay. And it makes me wonder if those Casa pink 218 $5s actually are unleaded, or if my brain just told me they were inferior because of the smooth inlays.

I agree that leaded Paulson with textured inlays are the best feeling chips. For that reason, my favorite set (that I own) is my FLV set. I love them even more than my custom relabel sets.

They are pretty light at 8.8g but that could be a color thing.

I personally LOVE shuffling those exact chips.

hmm, my FLV $5s are unleaded/unweighted at 9.1g. What weight do you have for your $5s and other FLV chips?
RVCL $5s with same base color and similar spots are 10.3g
PCA sec $5s with same base color - 10.4g

I feel pretty confident those pink 5’s are unleaded, too light, although hot pink is generally lighter than the other colors across the board regardless of lead or no lead

Wtf?? I was always told that FLVs were leaded. I never weighed them myself. This could be the largest PCF cover up ever!

I am interested in the Casablanca chips. I am not sure how I feel about the oversized inlays though. What is the deal with that anyway? Why would they do that?

Do the below highlighted chips exist in quantity and in excellent condition? This could be a new chipping adventure….
I couldn't read the OG post unless I read it in this voice

Weight alone doesn’t seem to determine leaded or not. Date they were made probably the most telling for lead.

Although, like I mentioned above, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not even the lead giving it that feel we love and just a different formula compared to modern day chips.

Hope I didn't burst your bubble
If you like them, that is all that matters.
As I told someone else when they found out their Lakeshore Inn $1 chips probably weren't leaded; nothing has changed with the chips, they look, sound and feel the same as they did yesterday.
Textured inlays are not really a good indicator of lead.. they are an indicator of age (older than x) which in turn may infer they were made during the leaded era.
Year of manufacture is a much better indicator, but still not a guarantee (and of course there are varying levels of additives, lead and otherwise, depending on the chip).
Unfortunately, there is some confirmation bias around "leaded" chips.
IMHO the real benefit of lead/weighting is weight (obviously) and sound.
I'm not claiming to be any authority on the subject, but I have tens of thousands of 39mm Paulson chips from all different eras in weights ranging from ~8g to ~12g.
I am very certain (and have done this myself) that if someone could only feel the rolling edge of a mint condition chip without seeing, handling, shuffling or feeling the weight, they wouldn't fair better than a coin flip at guessing if a Paulson chip was leaded or unleaded.
Example - RPC Pri $1 vs RVCL $1 - as much as I tried (and maybe wanted there to be) there was no discernible texture difference when just feeling the rolling edge of a barrel. Honestly, they feel and sound nearly identical when shuffling, etc.
Not saying some chips don't feel different, but that is usually more due to break-in/wear. YMMV
None of this is set in stone and you'll see all different opinions.
..probably should have posted this in the controversial thread :D

Leaded? ;)

Big fan of The Nugget $5.
Do I wish they were closer to official casino weight:p.. sure, but I'm not getting rid of them.

No argument. I often feel shame at the amount of love I feel for the edges of otherwise unloved mint RHCs.

I love RHC, very under appreciated and underrated, but mint , slightly used is best, as they don’t wear so well, but there are so many rhc options available to create a mixed set
