We are playing $1/$1 live, six handed. The session is going to be shorter than normal tonight (likely done before midnight), so we are late in the session even though it is only four hours in. The table is in a happy mood, though there are big winners and losers.

Cast of characters:

Button is playing $600. He was the player in the previous thread wanting to play T7s vs Hero's aces. The villain is highly volatile, not particularly rational in a poker sense. He has too much air in his range. He also has a host of betting tells.

Crafty, our wise old skilled LAG has the small blind. He is playing $125 and is not having a good night. Crafty's mind might be focused on his pending vacation - a month fishing & diving in Central America - rather than the game.

Hero has the big blind playing $400. It has been a good night for Hero. A steady accumulation of chips without any one spectacular hand.

The hand:

We start out with three folds and come to button who raises one dollar with the stated reason of getting Hero out of the hand.

Crafty concurs saying it is a dollar well spent to push Hero out of the hand.

It is absolutely true that Hero doesn't defend his blinds, blindly. But maybe not here.

Hero is in the BB holding :jh: :9c: [ most people will not remember, but I posted a thread with an almost identical hand (J9s) vs crafty in a blind stealing war late last year. http://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/j9s-in-the-bb-this-is-war.8844/ ]

Should Hero fold, call the dollar or raise? If raising, how much? Keep in mind that Hero will be called if he raises anything less than something outlandish. Both villains aren't going to want to fold after their comments. Also, there is some chance Crafty will jam all-in if Hero made a large enough 3-bet.

*** OK, so that part was easy. ***

Hero calls a dollar. Three way action, $6 in the pot.

Flop is: :9h: :4s: :3s:

Crafty in the small blind leads out for $5. Should Hero fold, call or raise? If raising, how much?

Button's chatter makes me think he has a decent over pair 10's-Q's range. I don't want to raise into that so I think you just flat and see what he does. He should raise and force SB out of the hand, then you can bet the turn with a good scare card. Who knows maybe the J will fall on the turn. Right now the pot will remain small so we can try to keep it that way and just check call the turn if we have to.

I'd call here with the info given. Control pot size and give yourself a chance to reraise a scare card or hit a card on the next street and giving Crafty a chance to catch up and the button to come along with air.

I don't think we can range him this specifically from a bit of chatter, but what he said definitely seems to fall into the "raise with an excuse" category of tells. Whatever he has, he considers it strong, so I would be wary of overpairs during this hand. We should not get too invested with only one pair.

Agreed that we should flat, but whether we should remain in the pot if button raises is another question. We're both sitting pretty deep, so it could be worthwhile to draw if his raise offers attractive implied odds, but it depends on the size of the raise (and how Crafty responds to it). The upside to the possibility of an overpair is that button is a fairly clueless player who will probably pay off handsomely if we improve.

On a related note, I don't think we should look for scare cards to bet the turn. An opponent who seems likely to pay us off handsomely is not an opponent we want to try bluffing. We want to get the goods cheaply and punish him with it, or else let him take down a small pot.

Would the button not raise more than $1 with a strong hand like TT preflop?

I call pre and call on flop. With the information provided we have the best hand a decent % of the time. I don't expect SB to do this with his strong hands and we have position on him

*** now the turn ***

Hero calls $5 as does button. $21 in the pot, three way action. Hero holds :jh: :9c:

Turn is: < :9h: :4s: :3s: > :kc:

SB checks. Action on hero, bet or check? If betting how much?

Just as a reminder - button was considering cold calling with T7s for $75 in a three-bet pot. Merge that data into your ranges for villain sitting on the button.

Check. Our hand is not all that strong and is vulnerable to a lot of overcards, not to mention that we could be beaten already. Keep the pot small.and hope for improvement on the river.

*** now what? ***

Hero checks. Button bets $10, SB folds. Action on Hero, fold, call or raise? If raising how much? Is this a bet/fold or bet/call or a bet/jam situation?

*** The river ***

Hero calls. It is heads up with $41 in the pot. Hero holds :jh: :9c:

River: < :9h: :4s: :3s: > :kc: :kh:

Action on Hero, check or bet? If betting how much? Bet/fold or bet/call or bet/raise?

Check/call. By betting if you have him beat you're more than likely either not getting paid (fold) or facing a tough decision (raise). It feels like he's betting the river if you check so it's the best of both worlds... you get some more cash in the pot and get to see showdown.

I like leading turn. River is a check call unless you put button on a lower pair and think he is more likely to call than bet.

Late to the party here, but I just call this down.

I'm also confused, the pot is both only heads up and about 60bb? This is not my poker experience.

I think Villian filled up with his pocket 4's.
