Hi all,
I was just curious to know what the folks who play $1/2 use for their breakdown? Assume a full table and multiple re-buys. Specifically how many $1/5/25 chips would you have? I think $100+ doesn’t really matter as a rack or 2 of $100 and a rack of $500 would give you unlimited options. But curious what you’d do on the lower end!

I built a 1000-chip set of for future hosting games (not soon) for 1/2 games as: 500/300/100/100.

Also have backup 400-chip set in case that’s not enough.

200/600/200/180/20
I never seem to put more than 150 ones in play and usually only have one rack on the table. That being said my 1/2 game plays more like big 1/3. This breakdown will support up to a pretty big 5/5 game.
Thank you very helpful. Yeah that was kind of my overall question. I tend to not use too many $1’s but felt like maybe I needed more. I probably don’t.

Yes. If I could go back in time, I would change out the rack of $1's for another rack of $25's...or $5's. Either one is good.

Minimum
100 x $1
200 x $5
200 x $25
80 x $100 20 x $500

More Chips to be added to $5 & $25, they are the co-workhorse chips
i'd agree with this minimum - for playability my preference would be:
200x1
400x5
200x25
100x100
maybe here add 80x100 and 20x500

i think one barrel of 1s and two barrels of 5s is going to be plenty per player. i realize most cardrooms i play at seem to play with tons of 5s and occasionally 100s, skipping 25s, but I can't stand that setup. i'd rather use a larger denom i.e. flick in a 100 rather than slide out a stack etc. I also really like playing with 25s but that's just my preference.

We had a juicy 1/2 game going yesterday where we had about 13000 in play (6500x bb). That's pretty big for our game. I only brought 600 chips (although the set has 920 chips) and I got almost all the chips I brought in play. We were 8 handed.

I brought these 600 chips for the game:
150x $1 (good number)
300x $5 (good number, but honestly more than needed)
100x $25 (a bit short, but no real issue)
40x $100 (a bit short but no real issue)
10x $1000

The only thing left in the bank in the end was 5x 1k chips. I did enjoy getting some 1ks on the table though! And combined with 100s they were great for value storage. This is my IG primary set, and I was not a fan of the 500s, so I didn't buy any.

This setup honestly played pretty well, but I'll bring a few more barrels of hundreds and twentyfives next game. Most of the fives ended up in two guys' stacks and therefore a large portion of them were
not used actively for a huge part of the game. I did enjoy having that many on the table, and the two big stacks did enjoy the voluminous stacks, but bets bigger than 30-40 were always handled with 25s rather than 5s, so theres really no need to have more than 2-3 racks for playability. I struggle to understand those advocating needing 4 or more racks of 5s in any given 1 table nl/pl set.
the breakdown of my full set is: 200/400/200/100/20 (1ks)

This is awesome. Thank you. for this info

Thank you all for contributing I've been working to perfect a set of mint Jack cinci secondary's set and I have 200/700/360/180/100/60 - That seems like it's way more than I'll need but I wasn't sure about the $1's hence y question. Last game I used a cards mold set that I had and I brought out 2 racks of $1's and it seemed to work fine but the betting wasn't as big as it sometimes gets. Ideally I'd actually love to have enough for 2 cash tables and in which case I'll need to add more $1 chips. I have more casino used $1's but I hate mixing new/used - they just don't feel right together.

Yeah you are golden here, but technically there is no such thing as too many fives :). So there's no right answer there :)!

When we discuss quarters as blind chips, I do think one rack is sufficient. When singles are the blind chip, it makes sense to go a little more because it is a 5x jump to the next chip instead of a 4x jump. I would think 150 would "feel fine" on most nights. That's 10-15 per player if you get to 10-handed.

My rule of thumb with no limit cash is that you want 80% of the chips in play to be in your workhorse denomination. That's the fastest way to count all ins. Count the workhorse chips, add a few value chips, and add a few blind chips and you should always get the answer quickly. If you do too much beyond 3 denominations in play, it start to get complicated to do mentally.

I'm currently trying to figure out the same $1 / $2 breakdown but for a 500 chipset. Future proof is a factor for me as the games have been getting bigger. We play $1/$1 $100buyin and $1/$2 $200buyin, comments on my current breakdown would be much appreciated.

I can only do QTY changes of 25
$1 x 150
$5 x 250
$25 x 50
$100 x 50

Total $7,650 (38 Buy in of $200)

Ive been constantly changing the QTYs of my 1/5/25 but cant decide on a balance. The $100s keep my bank high.

Side note: Im getting the Monte Carlos to tide me over until I can bring myself to get a custom CPC set or some Mercury Macau from Sunfly

I will do either

$1 x 100
$5 x 200
$25 x 150
$100 x 50 or

$1 x 100
$5 x 250
$25 x 100
$100 x 50 if you play mostly $1/$1

but I will most likely paid a bit more for 600 chips

and go with

$1 x 100
$5 x 200
$25 x 200
$100 x 100 or

$1 x 100
$5 x 300
$25 x 150
$100 x 50 If you play mostly $1/&1

Thanks for you input LeLe, unfortunately the set that im getting comes with a carry case that only fits 500 so Im kind of stuck with the chip QTY. We play mostly $1/2.

Originally i was going to get 50c pieces to play 50c / $1 but due to the limited chips i figured we can just play $1/$1 if we need to and that way I can get more $1s and $5s for a better overall set.

I was thinking maybe I could squeeze in an extra 25x chips somewere in the case like over the cards or something :D

If restricted to 500 chips in 25-increments, , I'd just go with:
150 x $1
300 x $5
50 x $25
and let $100 bills play. Your set will never be short for a single table 1/2 game.

I ended up pulling the trigger and my set will arrive in 3 to 5 business days. Hooray. Thanks for your advice LeLe and BGinGA, I tweaked my QTYs based on it and I ended up going with:

$1 x 125
$5 x 300
$25 x 50
$100 x 25

Total $5,375 (Enough for 26 buy ins of $200. 9 players 3 buy ins each, abit low in my opinion. We play around 7 people on average but I wanted more space)

I didnt want to play cash $100s and I figure this way I can always buy 100x more chips and colour up my chip carrier in the future if we play bigger blinds and my bank feels short.

I hope the 5s will give me a solid base to up the blinds to $2/$5 or $5/5 if we ever get there. Im just concerned if the 125x $1s will be enough

Thanks again for the help

I use:
175 - $1
300 - $5
100 - $25
25 - $100

We barely ever use the $100 chips, I don't see the point of having so many. Unless you're all a bunch of whales. We usually have between $2500 and $3000 on the table by the end of the night.
