Welvome, take your time and do some research here, grab samples lots of samples before you make a purchase, and then start figuring out ways to hide your addiction from your wife.

I would have bought more samples and taken a little more time before jumping in the buying end of the pool. I did get some samples, but, couldn't find samples of a couple of chips, and, ended up buying a set of Matsui. I liked them because of the colors, but, ended up they were slicker than I prefer, couldn't get the color I truly wanted and ended up selling for considerably less than I paid.
If your need are such that you just need a decent set to play with, then my recommendation is pick up one of the Tina sets that pop up often and call it a day. Once you get that set in play you can look around for something else that interests you. You'll be in for minimal money and probably playing with better chips than most people you play with have, and then you don't feel the pressure to just buy something, you get a mirror breathing room and can then logically persue your next set.
