Hello everyone. Been lurking for a while and decided I may as well just join up. I'm planning on starting a poker night with some friends, so, I have been trying to prep myself. I am by no means experienced (probably play a casual game of poker once every 6 months, if that), but as I get older it seems like I spend less and less time hanging out with friends. Thought starting a poker night would be a good way to get everyone together a little more often. Anyways; all that just to say, any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Any chip recommendations would also be appreciated. Thanks and I look forward to getting to know some of you!

Hello from Northern CA, and welcome to PCF!

I started my home game for almost the same reason. It gave me a great opportunity to get friends together that I did not get to see as often as I’d like. My game is pretty laid back, we just switched from playing tournament style to cash and my players loved the switch so if certainly recons starting with a cash game. I’d talk with your prospective players (ideally one on one) to get an idea of what stakes they would be comfortable with then set your game from there.

Good luck!

Welcome from Mountain View!!

Figure out your budget & in the meantime grab some samples if you don't know what you like...

This is helpful! I've been debating in my head all day if tournament style or cash would be better. Guess we'll try cash first!

I'll have to order a few samples. I saw a few that I liked but the denoms that I needed were out of stock.. of course lol.

Welcome. In my experience it's easier to start with tourneys. That could just be my group. We now mostly play cash, since I trained them up a little bit. They started with non denominated dice chips. Now they know how to use denom chips. I know it's strange right, and you would think casino players know this stuff already. We play .5/1. Big bets are about $20.

That is pretty much my experience. Whenever I have played in the past, it's with the non denominated dice chips. Seems funny that denom would be harder or more confusing. Pretty sure every time I have played at least one person says "what are whites worth again?" lol. I figured getting denom chips would make it simpler, but maybe not! lol

Welcome to the group! Your wallet will love it here hahaha. I also started my poker group for the same reason. In the city I’m stationed there is not much to do so I thought getting the coworkers together for some poker would be a fun way to kick back on the weekends. I host a $20 buy in game every weekend and a $50-$100 buy in every beginning of the month. It keep something big to look forward to and doesn’t hurt anyone financially if they lose. Like it was said before, get to know your players and what they’re comfortable with. Also, teach new players! Invest in some quad colored cards so they can easily learn the suits and go from there. Here is some pics from where it started with my group of 4-5 and now I have a roster of 15 in the matter of 4 months!

Haha! Trust me, every time I get into a new "hobby" my wallet looks at me like "who do you think you are?". Talked to a few of the guys today and they are thinking $100 buy in, depending on how often we get together (a few of us are a couple hour drive away, so, probably going to be like every other month). I just picked up a couple sets of Copags. I saw they have quad colored cards as well, I may grab a couple of those too. Nice! We have 6-10 right now depending on who makes it. I think we are going to get together the first weekend in January.

Just on the other side of Pendleton!
Well hello and welcome neighbor! I'm just south of you off Rancho Del Oro. I sometimes play tennis at Capistrano Park near you. If and when you get the home game going, may I invite myself? Maybe I can bring my chip sets and you can see if you like any of them.
Edit: oh I almost forgot, I'm going to try and start a local home game, strictly low stakes for the fun of it. I'll pm you to see if you'd like to join.

Oh yeah, you're real close! I'm over in Bonsall/Fallbrook. Yeah, that would be great.

Welcome from the Bay Area! Enjoy the roller coaster of a journey that chipping is! :)
Thanks man! I'm already blown away by how many options there are and how deep the rabbit hole goes!! Right now I'm leaning towards getting a set of the china clay Dunes chips from Apache. Just have to wait until January for a couple of the denoms I want to come back in stock. Fingers crossed.

BTW.. those green and orange chips in you profile picture look super sweet!

Trying to get my brother in law’s neighbor to bust out his table for new years in Carlsbad this year. Love that area.
Yeah, we do too. We moved down here from Ventura about 3 years ago.
