Hi,

I found this forum via BGG, a forum that's like PCF, but for board games. I bought a few denominations chips from one of the market place vendors, enough for "euro" games and other games where the range of values is small. Just having some 1s and 5s is enough for 80% of the games I play. 1s, 5s, and 20s or 25s is enough for 95%. A lot of board games come with awkward denominations to reduce print costs so you're having to exchange 1s for 2s or 3s and 2s or 3s and 1s for 5s. Having a large enough set of chips that people don't have to make change to so that other players can take points or income will be nice.

For the last 5%, I might try to get some samples so I can eventually assemble a larger set for games that need a wider range of values.

Code:
    Count Value Total Sum Total
White 75 1 75 75
Red 77 5 385 460
Gray 117 20 2,340 2,800
Black 62 100 6,200 9,000
Purple 40 500 20,000 29,000
Orange 20 2,000 40,000 69,000
        391

for 18xx games.

Sets that have 20s seem uncommon for poker. Maybe I'll try to get a set with 25s and call those 20s.

Welcome. I dont know about chip counts in what you're playing. I do know that 20 should be yellow or green. Grey adjacent to black in denoms sounds bad.

Welcome aboard. I've played Talisman where we swapped chits for poker chips which worked out really well. Yellow for gold, green for health, red for strength and blue for mana. Works like a charm.

I really like your denom breakdown, where each value is 4x or 5x the previous value which makes for efficient currency.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone!

I don't know why people chose colors but I agree it doesn't sound ideal. There's a 2300 post thread on BGG I've read 10% of where people discussed this which also resulted in Apache making board game oriented chips with those colors for those denoms.

I'd like to keep things simple, so once I know what I want I'll likely try to buy a cheap set and take what I can get on colors, maybe repurposing 25s to 20s for games that demand a 20. At the board game night I host, only one regular is a poker player, so I don't think anyone is going to complain if the 20 is a standard color for a 25.

There are plenty of helpful tips for relabeling chips to the 20 denom if that is what you seek. You can reach out to the many designers here for custom options and many are readily available from the group buys as well.

Welcome to the forum. I spent a few summers on Quadra Island in B.C. Very nice area to be around this time of year.

The same colors would be great for Seasons! But first things first, I should get a set that will work for all the "economic" games I play that need a wide range of denoms.

Lots of locals here!
I was going to try to get some samples, but I wonder if a local would let me handle some of their chips to get an idea of what different chips are like. From what I've read, I don't think I'll like china clays since I have a nose for offgassing smells. I ordered 4 barrels of cheap leftover 2024 Black Friday Chipco ceramic chips from @TheChipRoom in 3 denoms, which should be enough for 95% of games I play.

Now I just need to figure out what I prefer between the various kinds of plastic chips and clay chips like Paulsons? In the discussions on BGG, some board gamers prefer high quality ceramics and plastics to Paulsons. With luck I'll feel the same way

Thanks for the lead. I'll check out some of those threads.

You are welcome to drop by our shop in Coquitlam if you want to handle some samples. I have samples of china clay, Sunfly, Tina chips, CPC and Paulson chips.

It looks like emojis are stripped from my response, so some of my responses were a bit funny, especially the the one that was just the open face emoji and no text.

Thanks! I'll add it to my list of things to do next time I'm in the area.
