So I've played poker with my wife before. Nothing serious but we've played a handful of games. Then I got into poker. Like I found this wonderful place. After the chips started to show up, and I bought a table it was mostly eye rolls after that.

Two weeks ago we wanted a 7th player for a $50 cash game. She joined us and had a blast. She wasn't the first one out so that helped too.

My question is what's the best way to keep her interested and help her learn in between poker nights which are once a month (which is sometimes 7 weeks apart)? We've played just the two of us so I can better explain things and what not which was fun. But us there a better way to play 2 person poker?

Introduce her to three handed holdem. You get six cards and make three holdem hands. Once they are set you can’t move cards. One hand goes into the much after the flop betting, one after the turn bet, and that leaves the final one to play the river with.

Keeps it interesting and she can learn about pairs, suited connectors, and trash hands and how they can play out.

Wonderful! I'd be careful with 2 person poker or training or something. She may just love the social aspect; my wife would never talk strategy with me but loves playing in our tournaments. She's intelligent but just doesn't care much for that aspect of the game. If I pushed her to understand certain strategies she'd hate it, it has to be her idea haha.

Give it some time, keep inviting her and answer any questions she has. You can also point out what other people are doing to lead her to noticing patterns or behaviors; the first time my wife said that "he doesn't bet much so when he does, I folded", my heart grew three sizes.

Buddy… you’re asking the wrong question.

The question should be… how do I get my wife into poker CHIPS!

The game is the easiest part. :)

To keep it interesting, my wife and I play short deck, ante in and go straight to the flop. Either of us almost have a hand and keeps the game going compared to folding pre flop

That sounds fun! Definitely more interesting

Haha you're right. I'm workin on that too. Told her she cooks use a set with butterflies or flowers on em

Ok first thing, is she hot? Second, don't pressure her and bog her down with your chip nerdyness. That will scare her away. If she wants help she will ask you. Extend the invitation, pay her way which im sure you are doing. And say things like "it was a lot of fun playing cards with you". They melt over that gooey sh!t.

What you don't know is @ekricket is actually Senator Palpatine, soon it will be PLO, and then she'll want to see the circus

Mrs drdr went down this road. She had no interest practicing or being coached. Would get annoyed at suggestions to play outside of meetups. She improved organically from playing. Unintended outcome is her main focus of playing is to beat/bust me rather than do well herself. Has been a source of comedy for a few of my crew.

Would teach her how to achieve that but she's not interested. So weird but she's happy.

So your saying there's a mystery bounty on your head? ha ha

Early on, @Mrs Poker Zombie and I would discuss games after it was over. Big hands, my reads on opponents, that sort of thing. It was strategy, without it being a "here's what you should have done" discussion. She can make her own decisions. While our styles are similar there are differences, because I never told her how to play a hand and she just took my thoughts and built her own ranges and strategies.

Then we started playing Head-up games. Nothing very long, maybe 1-2 hours. At the conclusion of any folded hand, we would show our hands. This helped us to adjust to each other's games, which (as many here can attest to) has made us brutal opponents. Together, we have finished 1st-2nd in 4 different tournaments in Las Vegas. In each case the dealer asked if we just wanted to chop, because we were obviously together. The answer is always "no", as we want to play to the death and bask in the glory of our spouse's defeat.

This of course, morphed into us making out airplane poker table, so we could play heads-up on long flights.

Eventually, we started a heads-up series which we call "Master of Poker". Built a spreadsheet and everything. It's all heads-up games, mostly Holdem, but there are circus games as well (3-handed hold'em was an early entry, but ranges are very different than regular hold'em so you might want to get some regular play under your belt first.) While we have joint banking accounts, we have separate "caches" or "brown bag money", and our poker play is taken from that. It keeps the game competitive, because there is always skin in the game. The player that is currently down for the series gets to determine the stakes (between $20 and up to 1/2 the amount they are down). At the end the winner buys something with the losers money that both can enjoy.

Master of Poker is also a fun way to expose your wife to different chipsets.

After Season 1 (which took just under 4 years to complete) I bought a bottle of Jonnie Walker Blue, which I always thought of as "overpriced". I would have never bought it for myself, but using "her" money made it like Christmas, but without that pang of "why did you spend so much on me". As we draw close to the conclusion of season 2, I have been dramatically cutting in on her lead, but I'm still down.

Best part of getting your wife into the game, is that she can invite friends as well. Our game exploded once women felt comfortable playing, without feeling like they were going to be the only girl. We even host a ladies night once a year, where the men serve drinks and bring their drunk-ass brides home. The man also play a "servants game" in the kitchen, so life as a servant can actually be quite fun.
