How rare are the excalibur casino chips? and how hard would it be to build a solid set of them?

Are you looking for 1st edition or 2nd edition?
Most of the 1st edition has been destroyed, and it’s highly unlikely (although not impossible) that enough for a playable set exists.
The 2nd edition is still live. I don’t know how easy it is to harvest from the casino. They have cut down on their table games and they got rid of their poker room.

No poker but have many tables. You can get 10 each of every denom you want no problems. $1s and $5s are in nice shape.

$2s and $2.50s are obsolete.

I think there are a couple of us here who are using the 1st edition $1 chips in mixed-casino sets. But it would be nearly impossible to build a playable set with those first edition chips - you can find singles on eBay of the $5s and $25s, but they sell for around double face value and there don’t seem to be a ton of them.
As @greenchip points out, you could build a set of the current chips by harvesting them from the tables at face value.

oh wow ,how did the first edition get destroyed?
thats actually so sad excalibur is such a cool casino and their chips are so awesome. i love old 90s and early 2000s fantasy video games so a playable set of these wouldve been the holy grail of sets for me

Nevada law requires that casinos destroy their cash chips when they retire them. So once they replaced their chips with the 2nd generation, all the gorgeous 1st gen chips went into a giant chip shredder. Which means that all the 1st gen chips that exist now were essentially souvenirs that have found their way to eBay.

At one point, @Spinettis Gaming hundreds and hundreds of the 1st gen $1s in stock, many of them in apparently mint condition. I’m not sure how that happened. Possibly they just went and bought racks from the cage before they were retired. I dunno. But I digress.
