One of the local AmLegion tourneys I play has pretty sparse attendance. One of the reasons (besides a couple others I've gotten in feedback from other players) I'm sure is the structure.

In a word, it's horrible IMO. When you go to the 1st break the blinds are 500/1000. when you come back they double to 1k/2k. Then double again to 2k/4k. So you can go into the 1st break a healthy stack of around 40BB or so, but if you get a little card dead, or don't do anything but win a small pot or two, you can be a short stack a mere 20 minutes later upon coming back from the break.

In fact, the blinds basically go (the BB): 200, 400, 600, 800, 1K - Break - repeat previous pattern X10.

In comparison to other tourneys in the area, it's one of the worst. The only real reason I play it is because it's the closest to me of any of the others. I could almost throw a rock & break a window at the joint. But, after the break it quickly becomes a push-fest.

So, the TD asked me to come up with a new one (& he's taking the other feedback to heart as well.) So, I'd like some comments on what I came up with. Here's the scenario...

Tourney starts at 1PM. He'd like it to be over by 6:00-7:00-ish (5-6 hours - give or take). It's nowhere near that long now, due to the light turnout, but, if he can up the turnout he doesn't mind it going that long. Besides, they have a kitchen, so if there are still players past 4-5PM they can probably make a few extra bucks on food.

I'm basing my calculation on 27 players (3 tables) average. Starting stacks are currently 50K. (1.35M chips in play)

20 minute levels - 15 minute break after every 4th.

1 - 100 - 200
2 - 200 - 400
3 - 300 - 600
4 - 400 - 800
(break)
5 - 600 - 1200
6 - 800 - 1600
7 - 1k - 2k
8 - 1.5k - 3k
(break)
(pattern from levels 2 - 8 repeat x10)

Going by this, I'm figuring it would be over somewhere around...
15 - 15k - 30k
16 - 20k - 40k

Counting the breaks level 15 starts at 5hr-25min, which would be around 6:25-ish.

Which, if patterns hold, would be the point where the remaining players would make a deal on a chop.

Any thoughts... comments... somewhere I screwed up?

I think this is pretty good. You could add a 100-300 level to avoid that early double, but after that, this is a good progression.

I love using multiples of 2-4, 3-6, 4-8, 6-12, 8-16.

What is the buy in? In my opinion if it's in the $30 or less 5-6 hours is to long. Poker grinders don't want to sit there that long, for a small prize. If you're $50-$100 buy in that would make more sense. Just my opinion.

(Took too long to edit the above)

That was one of the other comments from a couple of the regs.

$50 is on the high-side for other like tourneys of the area. $40-$45 is average for the dozen or so VFW/Legion/Elks lodge tourneys in the area. Range is $35 - $60. & most of them do go 4-6 hours depending on turnout & structure.

The most well attended of them all is the lowest buy-in ($35), regularly has 50-ish players & goes about 5 hours (3 to about 8PM roughly)
