Storing them in racks and aggressively using a chip to check that each barrel is full causes that.

Good description. At that casino, they might have rack checked the chips 10 times a day to build up that much clay.

I have found a good way to scrape off the rack check marks, at least from the inlay is with the end of a stitch puller (or seam ripper), which is pointy, but not quite as sharp as a knife blade or needle. You can scrape off the clay without damaging the textured inlays* on these chips (*if i'm not mistaken).
