I was just thinking about this, and was curious what others thought about it.
Why, in a cash game, when someone is away from the table, shouldn’t they have to post the blinds while they are gone? Especially when there is a waiting list of people waiting to play?

In a casino, if you miss the blinds, you have to either post when you return or wait until your next big blind. You don't get to play any hands in the orbit if you didn't pay the blinds. But, you also don't have to pay the blinds if you missed the full orbit.

In a home game, I'm a lot more lax about missed blinds. One big blind or so is pretty insignificant, and my games are friendly enough that nobody is angling to save .50 by timing their bathroom or smoke breaks. That said, some home games do require returning players to post, and that's fine too.

Do what works for your crowd.

I absolutely agree with everything you said. I am extremely lax with my game. I don’t make players post at all for missing blinds, but I have three tables, and have never had 3 full tables of cash games going. However, I really don’t think it’s fair that at a casino where there are several people waiting for a seat at a game, that a player can stroll around away from their table for as long as they want, missing many blinds, and have to pay less than the amount of blinds they missed, when they return.

I've never been in a casino where it's "as long as you want" when there's a list.

Pretty much every place has a time limit on how long you can leave the table, after which your chips will be pulled and your seat given away. It varies from place to place - some places it might only be 15 minutes, others will let you take a meal break up to 45-60 minutes and still get your seat back.

It's rarely a problem until it is. I've played in a few sessions where a player will sit down, play 2-3 hands, get up and leave for 10-20 minutes, come back and play 2-3 more hands, leave again, etc. It's highly annoying, and all you can do is complain to the floor (which may or may not help).

Tournaments are run by a clock, cash games are not. Most casinos that I have played in will bag a players chips if they are absent from the cash table beyond a set amount of time.

Ask the floorman what the rule is for players who leave the table.

I believe Casino Niagara near me let's you leave for up to 30 minutes. However, the rake is $6 every half hour and they will just take it from your stack if you're not there.

It’s silly to force someone to choose between using the bathroom and their seat at the table. You can’t leave for an hour, but 10 minutes for a bathroom break, snack, or smoke is reasonable.

If you have to post the "missed" blind when you return, is this already a call (assumibg it is a non raised pot) or you have to put in another blind to call?

At my game, if you are away in the blind, it gets posted for you. If you are first to act and you are away from the table, there is a good chance you are straddling.
Acting all loosey goosey cutting a log

At my our home games, if we know you just went to the RR real quick or to grab another drink we'll post the blinds for you. If you went outside for a smoke break or something like that we skip you.

home game if I get up I'll just announce I'll call anything up to $100 blind. I'm usually back by the time it would reach that action.

At our game nobody takes breaks because:
  1. nobody smokes,
  2. nobody wants to sleep their props. You gotta call it to get paid, but if you owe we just take it from your stack. :ROFLMAO:
