Looks like I am buying another tournament set. However, I could really use some help on the configuration.

I want a set for two tables/20 players. I've narrowed the purchase down to the following two options, but I don't know which would provide the better player experience.

Option 1

T100 base with 125bb starting stacks (assuming level 1 at 100/200) of

T100 x 10
T500 x 4
T1000 x 7
T5000 x 3

T25K chips available for doubling the starting value or re-buys

Option 2

T500 base with 100bb starting stacks (assuming level 1 at 500/1000) of

T500 x 6
T1000 x 7
T5000 x 8

T25K chips available for doubling the starting value or re-buys

I am trying to determine which is the better option and what would be a good structure for that option. I feel most comfortable with 20 minute blinds, and would prefer a running time of under five hours or so. It is likely that the tournament will sometimes be run as a single table, and sometimes as a full two tables. I'm guessing I might need separate structures for those situations.

I would really be grateful for any advice.

I don't feel that six chips per starting stack is adequate for the lowest denomination in a set -- I would consider 8 as absolutely minimal, and I even avoid that if at all possible. 10 to 16 chips is optimal for the lowest two denominations in any set, imo. Having fewer T500 chips in a set with T1000 chips is an exception, unless T500 is the lowest denomination.

I agree with BG. While it can be done with as few as 8, your really do need 10-12 min for a tournament at the lowest 2 levels.

Looks like 2 votes for option 1. If I go that way, is there any structure that will result in the T25Ks actually getting used in a run time of less than 6 hours?

The following structure with 18 minute levels will work for a STT or a MTT.

100/200
100/300
200/400
300/600
400/800
(10 minute break)
500/1000
600/1200
700/1500
1000/2000
1500/3000
(10 minute break)
2000/4000
3000/6000
4000/8000
5000/10000
6000/12000
(8 minute break)
7000/15000
10000/20000
12000/25000

MTT may run a little over your 5hr. time limit, but not enough to warrant a change to the structure. A 15 to 20 player tournament will run around 5:30 with breaks. 15 to 20 minutes longer with four to five re-buys.

Your proposed set (option 1) will require a minimum of 509 chips -- 10/4/7/3/1 stacks = 25 chips per player x 20 players = 500 chips plus 9x T25000 chips for colors-ups of the three lowest denominations.

The T25000 chips will be required for color-ups of T100 and T500 chips, even with T25K starting stacks. Going with T50000 or T75000 starting stacks would get more T25k chips into play -- first by adding them to the starting stacks, and also by extending play to the point where color-ups of the T1000 chips would be necessary.

If you do add a few more T25k chips to allow for T75000 starting stacks (or T50k stacks with re-buys), all of those scenarios would finish in under 6 hours using 20-minute blind levels using the blind structure below. The number of chips required to do so is 529, unless you round up the T25k chips to even barrels (540 total chips if doing so).

T25000 starting stack (add one or two T25k chips to create T50K and T75K stacks):
10 x T100
4 x T500
7 x T1000
3 x T5000

chip set:
200 x T100
80 x T500
140 x T1000
60 x T5000
49 x T25000 - includes 9x for color-ups
--------------
529 total chips, or 540 total chips if rounding up the T25K chips to 60, or three full barrels.

20-minute levels, single table:
  • T25k starting stacks should finish no later than L13, or 4:20 plus breaks
  • T50K starting stacks should finish no later than L15, or 5:00 plus breaks
  • T75K starting stacks should finish no later than L17, or 5:40 plus breaks

20-minute levels, two tables:
  • T25k starting stacks should finish no later than L16, or 5:20 plus breaks
  • T50K starting stacks should finish no later than L18, or 6:00 plus breaks
  • T75K starting stacks should finish no later than L19, or 6:20 plus breaks

Dropping the blind level times down to 15 minutes will shorten the times listed above by roughly 1.5 hours.

BG suggested a really good structure, so I'll not address that. Reasonably steady blind increases are going to make for a better tournament. His suggestion has increases ranging from 25-50%; yours range from 17%-50%.

I will address your question about getting 25K chips in play. The answer is you can easily get them involved. We do 40K as our normal starting stack, with blinds starting at 50/100. Other than the first blind that doubles, ours go up between 40-67%. We use 25-100-500-1000-5000 in our starting stacks, and we are using the 25000s at the end and we only typically go 4 hours. On rare occasions we even get the 100Ks in play, though I have those primarily for our bigger tournaments.
