Decided to up my Matsui GB order up to 600.

What is the best 600 chip breakdown for a .25/.50 cash game set with 8-10 players, using 25c, 1, 5, 20, 100 denominations.

I’ve seen the below breakdown from a thread search, but that equals 700? chips:
160 x 25c
240 x $1
200 x $5
80 x $20
20 x $100

Thanks all, clearly I’m fairly new to this so please bear with my questions.

The 100 fracs is interesting. Wouldn’t you want those to be a multiple of 4 (120 or 160) to help with initial starting stacks?

I was leaning towards the below, but does this only look good on paper and not in a real game?
160 x 25c
240 x $1
120 x $5
60 x $20
20 x $100

My group doesn't have a need for $100 chips yet, (give me some time). I went with:

.25 x 160
$1 x 280
$5 x 180
$20 x 80

I went a little heavy on the $1 chips in anticipation of making this a dual purpose set (cash and limit) by adding a bunch more $1 chips in the future.

Technically 100 is divisible by 4. ;)

It all depends on how your game plays. If players are buying in for $60, then I suspect you will be short on $5s. If your players buy in for less, I think you would be fine.

The first 8 people to sit down get 12, then you just make change from there. With your suggested breakdown here I can almost promise you will wish you could trade fracs for 5s.

First of all, that's too many mixed racks for my OCD.

You might need more than 100 fracs but only if your game runs very small. An average of 10 x .25 is plenty for most games. The workhorse chip will be the $1.
I like 100-200-200-60-40.

To add - 100/200/200/80/20 is my preferred breakdown, but if you care more about matching starting stacks and mixed racks don’t bother you, I’d go 120/200/180/80/20.

To me, matching stacks is more important in tournaments. People come and go in cash games. Change is easy. If budget allows, extra fracs are great and look nice on the table. However, playability will suffer if you lack enough $5s for a game that needs them.

I’m doing:

100 @ .25
200 @ $1
200 @ $5
60 @ $25
40 @ $100

Not sure that is optimal but I prefer full racks

this is good.

^ That’s good. Maybe 80x$25 and 20x$100 if you’d like.

100 fracs is plenty for a single table 25c/50c game.

This is better. It's how I build my one table cash sets.

I totally agree, ha. That’s why I suggested you just give the first 8 players 12 fracs and make change from there. But OP seemed to suggest caring about it, so I wanted to present a viable option.

The advice given so far is solid but it all depends on your specific game. Following questions would help identify how big or small your game is as well as the type of players you expect to have in it.

1) What do you expect the average buy-in to be?
2) How many rebuys do you expect over the nights in total?
3) How competent/willing do you think your players will be to making change? Nothing slows down a game of drunk/stoned recreational players like asking them to make change every other hand.

The important part is to get all 100 quarters on the table immediately. To do this, the first five players to buy in get issued 20x each. Everybody else gets none, and just buys a couple bucks worth from those players already at the table.

No reason to dole out 12 per person, and have quarters still sitting in the rack.

Great point. I have two groups that play differently. One small with $20-$60 buy-ins and one that usually goes $100-$160. Both usually rebuys about 2-3 times. Unfortunately we’ve only played a handful of times, hence my lack of experience. I would rather not have to make change all night, as our games are more on drinking.

I think I’m going with the below.
Let the flogging commence.
120 x 25c
200 x $1
200 x $5
60 x $20
20 x $100

Agreed. If you wanted to ad one more rack, what would it be? $1s or $5s?

I just changed my order to: 100/200/300/80/20
200 x $1’s should also be plenty. The $5’s will provide you more flexibility and growth.

100/200/200/80/20 (600)
100/200/300/80/20 (700)
100/200/400/80/20 (800)

Even better (IMO) is the first 5 get a stack and the rest buy them from these players as needed.
Thanks to this forum I now do almost the above (when playing 1/2 SEK nl). We usually start when 3 have arrived and I, as the host, take ALL of the 1:s minus a stack for each of the other players. As players arrive I sell them a buy in of 5:s and they can exchange a stack of 1:s from me (if I still have them).
