Are the HSI $1 chips an easy choice for a relabel? Looks like a label can be placed right into the larger circle. Has anyone played around with these yet?

I also was pondering this very thing.

My knowledge and experience are limited, but I'd say you would still want to mill out the extra material. I figure the label would be indented above the previous label area.

I'd want my label to be flush. I'm sure @Gear can chime in. Or @grantc54 . These guys know their stuff.

Looking at the photos from the WSOP circuit event last year they mixed the ceramic Horseshoes, ceramic WSOPs, and Paulson WSOPs in almost every event which is just yuck. They must have gotten complaints or issues with the gray 5Ks because they replaced them with the red chipco WSOP 5ks in almost every event as well.

I haven't played around with these exact chips, but I have had @Gear make me (unlaminted) labels for RHC 7/8" inlays before... The unlaminated labels will go inside the indentation and still be lower than the outer rim (I asked him to make them for Park MGM $1's). This is probably your best bet, it's super easy and you don't have to spend a lot of time murdering each chip.

But yes, you could murder them and put in a 7/8" inlay or mill them and go with a bigger inlay.

I would suggest you at least try the over label first, it's much less work and you can easy change the labels or eventually murder/mill them if you don't like it.

But we're talking about the HSI $1s with their unique inner inlay. I would think that putting an un-laminated label over the entire recess would cause that inner inlay to show through... Or at least be felt through.

This is great stuff.

@BearMetal , I'm in a similar situation. Had to have me some of these minty HSI $1s and paid xx dollars and 2 days later, they get discounted. I too feel compelled to buy at least one rack to help cost averaging. Lmao!

I think a nice gear label over could work nicely. Definitely worth a shot! That would be my route of customization too.

You maybe right... I don’t know what is unique about the HSI inlay, I was thinking it was the same as any other 7/8” inlay on an RHC. Could you shed some light as to what makes it unique?

Daaaaaaaaaamn

Great price on the HSI $1 chips....been a while since we've seen another DOORBUSTER :)
I need to build another limit set, my other set has not seen any play yet....but 60c for mint spotted RHC's

Too bad Jim doesn't love the limit set nutters :(

:D :D

Still on the fence...just murdered 1800 clays, doing another 1000 chips + milling (that's a LOT of work)

My Saloon set are all overlabels - no spinners at all! They all sit perfectly flush as any other mint RHC chip would t.

You do need to apply the levels veryyyy meticulously, especially if you plan on aligning your labels with the edge spots.

Once you get a good rhythm going, it's fun :)

Can I ask what label you used then? Or description words to @Gear ? I haven't murdered the HSI $1 yet, should I? Or is the move to just overlabel? I don't actually find it hard to remove them, and like many have a pile of time on my hands at the moment.

I used "matte vinyl labels, unlaminated."

I've posted this before, but it's helpful here as well:

For quality of chip - inlay replacement is better in basically every case.

Overlabels Pros + Cons
Pros:
- Faster
- Preserves underlying chip (and therefore it's original value)
- Cheaper? (if you decide to go with laminated or textured labels with inlay replacement, not a requirement)
Cons:
- Can be noticeable on top of chip
- Just doesn't look as good as full inlay replacement

Full Inlay Replacement Pros + Cons
Pros:
- Looks flawless
- Option to be laminated or textured labels
- Lays deeper set in the chip, less chance for peeling
Cons:
- Much more time consuming
- Lose some value of original inlay (this is semi-debatable if people always intend to relabel, but in general it's worth less when murdered)
- Can be more expensive

My reasoning for overlabels was mostly their value + laziness for realizing how difficult it can be to remove old inlays.

Appreciate it. Also your set is one of the ones that has inspired me to even attempt this. Lucky to have ran into the 1st HSI sale to have something to work off of.

The inlay on the 25c/$1/$2.5 is unique b/c it has the 2nd recessed area where the label actually is. We're talking about placing an un-laminated label on top of the entire inlay area (not just the smaller area), right? I would think that this would cause the ridges of the 2nd smaller inlay area to be visible through the label (or at least to be felt through).

Every 7/8” RHC I have seen has a milled area for the inlay and the entire area (milled inlay to outer mold) is laminated, This would leave no “inner ridge” (although it might appear that way optically on a picture). This is also the same process for 1&1/16” RHC inlays (it’s just that the milled area is larger). I would be surprised that Paulson modified that manufacturing process just for HSI... so you’re saying that the laminate only covers the inlay (7/8” center portion) and not the entire center until the outer mold? If so, that would be unique.

OK, so just went back and compared the HSI $1 to a normal RHC chip:
  • The inlay of the HSI is smaller; there's no doubt about that. The extra white around the smaller label is chip. It's not laminated.
  • I ran my thumb over the area where the smaller inlay meets the chip material, and although I can tell there's a change of materials there, I now believe that you would most likely NOT feel this under an over-label.
  • However, upon inspecting the entire area of the inlay+chip material, I still believe that this might be a hair less deep than a normal RHC.
So, I am not convinced that an un-laminated label would not cause spinners. I think the only way to find out is to try one (I only have laminated labels from Gear). But if the depth of this recess is the same as a normal RHC, I do not believe that the smaller inlay's edges would be able to be felt through.

No ridges in my overlabel set.

The Aransas 5s were the only chip slightly different frok the rest with what seemed like a slightly bigger(wider) inlay. Depth still the same though.

Caesars Southern Indiana 1s were the same size/depth as the Jacks that I used.

I have a HSI sample set and I think I may have some leftover label (matte vinyl unlaminated)

Let me see if I can find them and report back to y'all. I'll try putting a label on this exact HSI chip.

I must have thrown out my leftover labels :(

Sorry y'all - thought I may have kept the 10 or so leftovers that I had

As an FYI, not RHC, but similar inlay size and one is smooth (Golden Nugget) and other is textured (Mirage). Both with @Gear overlabels (unlaminated). Both came out great, still have small recess on each (no chance of a spinner). Cannot feel any texture or transition between inlay and chip material. YRMV, but it worked out with these.

Those ones that are RHC with a 7/8 inlay would be perfect to mill 1 inch. I have four to test but I have a few jobs to finish before I reset my bit. I'm pretty sure you could make a 1 inch custom label that would fit in those pretty perfectly. It's a opportunity we don't get often with the chips released IMO.

Also I think most RHC inlays are 1 1/16". From what I have read in other posts there isn't really a viable option for a 1 1/16" bit. 1" will definitely work on the ones but if you are using them in a mixed set the inlays/labels will be a bit smaller than the rest.

You can mill chips like these (THC-sized inlay on RHC-sized recess) with a 1 inch bit. That’s what I did to my Tropicana and mandalay house mold chips:

If you don’t want to mill, unlaminated overlabels would work.

How many of you thought the sale was today and were just refreshing the page like crazy?

....

Just me? Okay.
You need to create a countdown calendar like used for the 12 days of Christmas...with little treats for each day closer to the sale!

If anyone is getting a micro IOC set and doesn’t want the snappers or want to trade the snappers for fracs 1, 5 lmk

I think I am going to try for the IOC $1s. But, I have no idea what I am going to do with them once I get them. I don’t like mixed sets and I don’t see myself doing the milling and relabel thing. But, still...I feel the call...
