There's a soap on British TV called "Emmerdale." So what, I hear you ask.

A recent subplot involves a group of four or five men starting up a home poker game, which is full of the usual bollocks that apparently takes place but never ever does. What's particularly annoying is that the person writing the script or whatever has obviously NEVER played it or even seen the game being played, furthermore the characters are all playing for ££££s and a couple are supposedly good, experienced players, which makes it all the more difficult to swallow.

Example 1:

Scene starts off with the flop being dealt.

Bloke A (first to act): Fold.

Me looking at tv in disgust: W H A T ? ? ? ? ??????

Example 2:

All cards have been dealt, last round of betting, headsup:

Bloke A: Bet... 100. (throws unknown quantity of chips DIRECTLY onto the chips in the pot, which has no set boundary and laps randomly at the players own stacks like waves on a beach).

Bloke B: I'll call.

Bloke A: Check

Bloke B: Check

Me: W H A T T H E ? ?????????? HE'S JUST CALLED, YOU DON'T CHECK! WTF?????????? WHAT????

Example 3:

Like Example 2, all cards have been dealt, last round of betting, headsup:

Bloke A: All-in

Bloke B: All-in

Bloke A: Let's see your cards then

Me: WTF? Bloke A shows first!

Example 4:

Flop, three players still in:

Bloke A: Bet... 50

Bloke B: I'll call your 50... (three second pause) and raise 20

Me: WTF??????

Bloke C: I'll call your 20

Me WTF????????????? (to be fair I think I just imagined that last one)

So... that made me wonder there are any other totally assinine depictions of poker playing on the tv that make your blood boil. I can think of the "Only Fools & Horses" episode as follows:

Boycie: raise 300

Del Boy: I'll see your 300 and raise you 300...

Boycie: I'll see your 300.... (at this point there is no more "free" money on the table - Boycie pulls a previously undeclared and hidden wad of money out of his jacket pocket and plonks it on the table)... and raise you 1000

Del Boy: But I haven't got that kind of money

Boycie: WEll it's gonna cost you 1000 to see me... or lose.

ME: WTF???????

Can you think of any others?

This same scenario happens in an old Battlestar Galactica where Apollo has an old West showdown with Red Eye.

The last hand of the (new) Casino Royale poker scene is so crazy that it comes up every couple weeks at the poker game. If you haven't scene (ha) it, spend a few minutes watching it. I know they have to do things to build drama, but it's borderline ridiculous. (Not to mention, they play the scenes like Bond is some great player, but all his big hands are ones that "play themselves", as we say...)

edit - found an apt summary in the Youtube comments...

"Checked until the River...all going ALL IN....slow rolles Aces full....and losing vs a Straight Flush...focking Pokerstars comercial."

Anything that depicts splashing the pot, which is just about everything. But then again, normal betting etiquette isn't screen sexy or dramatic.

You were watching Emmerdale?
;)

Er.... No?

Nice try.... Crazy biscuits stuff from the writers though - it's not like no one in this country plays poker. Although, maybe a very, very low % of their viewing demographic...

However... I see your Emmerdale... and raise you River City.

Also I remember that only fools and horses, 20 years ago? Way to make me feel old.

Breaking Bad has a poker scene with players open folding.
Although the message of the scene was that Walter bluffed Hank, and of course Hank's wife grabs the discarded hand and shows the bluff.

It doesn't bother me that they shoot scenes this way because I feel they are not trying to waste time to get to the point.
And I think they know that it is not played correct.

Remember seeing that on YouTube. I think there had been a couple of other incidents before then (discussing Negreanu's hand/likely action while the hand was still live was one of 'em).

Okay, not on television, but the tone of this article is hilarious to me:

Watch a Poker Player Win 9 Million Chips By Being an Absolute Jerk

I guess calling the clock so early could be seen as an etiquette breach, but I wouldn't go nearly so far as calling stealthmunk an "absolute jerk" (at least from this particular hand).

I mean, in general, Stealthmunk is the definition of an "absolute jerk". Check out his twitter. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty entertaining, though. He's a jerk I like to pay attention to.

Yeah, his action in the Negreanu hand was way out of line and in life he is a cock, I agree. But the article focused on the hand versus the Italian guy as if it was some kind of transgression when it was totally fine.
