and I hear you about the moon, wtf, why haven’t we been there like 800 times by now? Couple of drop ins, kick some rocks and then say, I guess we’ve seen everything, no reason to come back here…

Mostly because of the cost, and the timelines. The costs would be astronomical (sorry) and doing anything meaningful, e.g. establishing a base, would take longer than 8 years to achieve -- in other words, longer than even a two-term president is in office. Spending the kind of money required would be political suicide.
