Yet another hobby (1 Viewer)

Very, very cool, thank you. At some point (sooner rather than later I would think), I'll wind up checking out the classified section and likely order a 'small' amount of paulson chips just to have some. It appears that paulson is the big dog but doesn't sell to the public anymore, right? I've seen quite a few eBay ads for them and of course they are pricey.
Paulson is the “Big Dog” to many here AS FAR AS THEY KNOW. ;) :ROFLMAO:

I'm going to see if I have any extras in my collection. If I do, I send you a couple of chips. Pm me your name and address.

Bill

I was going to say the exact same thing, not surprising detroitdad beat me to it.

Congrats on your sobriety, the older I get the more I realize I have demons I need to face and if I had any kind of a substance abuse problem taking the step you have taken would be an absolutely giant one to a new life.

But also, this site and this hobby can be trouble as well, tread carefully. You might accidentally fall in love with leaded, shaped inlay paulsons or TRKs and never recover from that. ;)
Hahahaha. I PMed him and got a welcome package ready. We are an odd bunch.

So I've been doing a bit of research and came to the conclusion that I first want to put together a 'small' collection of 100 chips, maybe 200 at most... It appears that Paulson's are the way to go with either THC or RHC and there are offers out there on eBay as well as this site. Not exactly cheap of course, but depending on size and type, etc from $2.50 to upwards of $10 each. That was a bit hard to swallow but OK.

So I have many questions, but first is where to post questions like this? This is the introductions section so I figure I'd keep this short and move to the casino cage.

So for now, is eBay a good way to go? There are Paulsons there but it's hard to know the condition as most just say casino grade, used. For example, I almost make an offer on a rack of 5's and 25's Jack Cincinnati today, but then did a search on PCF and found that Apache had offered what they said were almost new Jacks for about $2.50 each for a rack. This was in Jan so it's just a reference point. So my question is do most of you use the classified section here or eBay or ???

I've now entered "leaded, shaped inlay paulsons or TRKs " into my list of things to research
Now you’re really screwed brother! Not kidding…

You can start a new post in casino cage, but continuing in your introduction thread is also fine.

What is the goal of collecting 100 to 200 chips? Is it just to get them in your hand and feel/see them? Because you can definitely do better than $2.50 a chip. First and foremost, the classifieds here offer Paulson's for great prices. Yes, of course, there is a massive range of value from less than a dollar a chip to $20 a chip. But my point is that by leaning on the classifieds here, you will probably save yourself time and money.

But also do not forget about vendors here who harvest chips. Harvesting a rack of $1 chips from a live casino will not cost you $2.50 a chip. So you can reach out to great members like @casinochipper22 and check out what they already have to offer. Here's one of his current threads:

Good information for sure. Thank you. I haven't decided to stick with a low number or get a bigger set at a better price but I'll check on those links.

My journey down the rabbit hole continues :)

welcome! but: you will soon realize this is not "yet, another other hobby"

My username was actually kind of an inside joke when I first signed up on chiptalk because I had a buddy that signed up at the same time and I wanted to annoy him with it.

I do live in the Seattle area (up north, lake Stevens) but I am Denver broncos fan. My buddy is a big Seahawk fan and wanted to be 12thMan so I signed up first and took it thinking I could change it later. I just kept it when this board went on line.

What part of Seattle? Some legendary members of the board are from this area (not me), the PNW is well represented.
I grew up right in Seattle, Magnolia area actually and over time lived in Lynnwood and N. Seattle in Broadview. One thing I do miss about the PNW is the motorcycling. My favorite ride was up highway 9, right by Lake Stevens, up to Cedro Woolley, then do the loop on 20 over the N. Cascades Highway to Winthrop, down the Wenatchee River and back over Stevens Pass. Lake Stevens is a very cool place as I recall.

I don't have any pulsen chips that I want to part with. I just don't have that many extra. So I'm going to send you one chip from my hot stamped custom bourbon set and a partial sample set from my solid sunset cash set.

I've also included a cut card, some ceramic chips, and a dealer button.
Detroit Dad, I received the chips yesterday, and thank you very much. I do like the Bourbon Basement chips; I assume those are custom. Did you have CPC make them or some other place?

And if you live in the Detroit area, my nephew was a middle reliever for the Tigers until I think two years ago. Blaine Hardy. I think he was with Detroit for 5 or so years, then had elbow trouble, tommy john surgery and I think retired this year to be a stay at home dad. He actually got to start 6 or 8 games one season when one of the starters was injured. Lived the dream.

Josh, your sample set arrived yesterday along with one from Detroit Dad. Thanks a bunch. So unless I'm reading the logo markings wrong, it looks like I now have my first Paulson THC chips. Like the ones from DD, the clay chips do feel nice. I was curious to see some chips that said Rainier Club with the mountain in the background, since I'm originally from Seattle, but then I remembered that there are some reservation casinos in Tacoma (south of Seattle). And it's been probably 15 years since I've been to LV but I do remember the Boulder Station casino. Is it still there?

Also, you sent an interesting chip that looks to be hot stamped (if that's the right term) and says 'to the world's greatest poker player' and has the THC.

Is that a legit Paulson? Anyway, thanks again!

If you have an addictive personality and don't have unlimited funds, get out now!
Ha, I think that is true! I saw a post from a guy who had, I think 45k chips. So depending on the type/quality of chips, he could have spent between, say $20K to $100K or more. Wowzer. The pictures showed chips everywhere in his house, and it's hard to hide that many from your wife so I guess she's all in :)

But I guess if he needs money he can always sell some.

That's legit.

So I'm still mulling what to go for in terms of a set(s) as I order some samples. For now I'll stick with Paulsons as I can afford them. I configured a rack from Apache of the Indiana Grand Paulsons, some 1's, 5's, 25's and 100's. (They seem to get more expensive with the higher denominations.). Anyway, a small set but a start and they look nice imho.

But I wanted to get people's opinion on eBay. I've actually never ordered anything on eBay but just joined for this endeavor. I successfully ordered a barrel of Paulson 1's that were delivered and another that was not (yet). It feels strange to consider spending, say $1K or more from somebody I've never worked with or has some history on this forum. I guess eBay has protections, but I did also read a thread in this forum's classifieds about a purchase where the seller disappeared; maybe he resurfaced later...

On eBay, maybe I could get an opinion of a sale I'm looking at:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/3253466104...ka/Be6tXoFxkCaooBZPOY3XbU=|tkp:Bk9SR4Czl_X3YA

Sorry about the long URL, but it's for 500 THC pharaohs (425 denoms, 75 blank) that look to be in like-new condition. I like the pharaohs a lot, but the seller is asking about $6/chip. I'll probably just watch it go, maybe make an offer for $3 each. Is this something you guys would go for? Just curious.

Looks like about 760 chips. Very nice! Did you get them from Apache and what condition are they in?

Well, I've been chipping for about two weeks now and I must say I had no idea how many avenues this hobby has. It really is fun; expensive maybe but I'm enjoying it, and the people here are great (and in some cases I've meet some nice people on eBay as well).

So I've accumulated about 350 chips and I'm surprised at that number and how easy it is to add to the meager collection. Given that I don't gamble hardly at all and will likely never host a poker party my initial thoughts were to focus on a few collections of 100; nice and easy to fit in a rack tray, and I've ordered 5 barrels of Indiana Grand Casino chips from Apache with the intention that that would be it, but on second thought...Somebody up above warned me to get out while I can and I'm starting to understand. My wife caught me looking at chips on the laptop yesterday and said, "I thought you already had some poker chips." Needless to say I didn't respond.

But where to go from here? Now of course I'm thinking about a representative set of 300 to 500. I saw a very nice set of Paulson Pharoahs on eBay and within a day of 'watching' the seller made me an offer of half. I probably should have bought it, but I'm thinking there's no rush and I almost certainly won't stop after I buy a set. And I just saw a gorgeous set of Paulson Dunes in the PCF classifieds that got me thinking of selling my motorcycle. Egads.

Anyway, I'm curious to see how people proceed. Putting out a large sum of money to buy a nice, complete set or building a set one rack at a time. The latter "may" be less expensive and takes longer of course, but may be more fun.

When I first started reading I couldn't understand why people would make labels and do the artwork and then do custom chips but now I'm getting it.

So far so good :)

DD, when I said that I was starting to understand the custom thing, it was mostly after seeing the cool Bourbon Basement chip you sent me. I'm already think of artwork...

I think this all depends on your goals and your budget and your comfort level. You mentioned above that you don't gamble and don't host games, so I don't think it makes much sense to dump a ton of cash on a set all at once.

Tangent: I don't host tournaments, yet I have like 5 tournament sets, including a few which were quite expensive (at least to me). My intention is to NEVER play with crap chips again, so when I go to someone's house that has a tournament, I am bringing mine with me. So you don't necessarily need to host in order to have a few sets.

OK, so with that said, I personally started out by-the-rack as I dipped my toes into the PCF pool. Sometimes, like with Group Buys and TCR sales and fully custom CPC chips, you kinda have to buy whole sets. But honestly, I still love "the hunt". I still buy a rack-at-a-time when I can, and build mixed sets as projects. It's so much more satisfying when you finish off a mixed set.
