I think it was in reaction to the $8 chip being discontinued. As many of you know, eight is considered a lucky number in Chinese culture. A few years ago, the Nevada gaming commission stopped casinos from making $8 chips for Chinese New Year, since the chips were actually not for table play, but simply being offered by collector’s items from the casino (in the NGC’s point of view). Since then, casinos have offered other denominations as CNY chips, but I don’t think they have been as popular as the $8 chips, so IMHO, that’s why fewer casinos have been making CNY chips.
