None curious if people take them before being destroyed

Just an FYI/public service announcement. I recall reading that removing chips from the tournament playing area can result from being banned (permanently) from WSOP events and maybe even banned from all Harrah's/Caesar's casinos. The WSOP reasons are mainly to avoid "chip dumping" (i.e. passing chips to another player in the event) and taking chips out to study for counterfeiting purposes. But their rules can snag unsuspecting chip collectors who might do this, and in my eyes, the risk of trying to take chips away from a tournament is greater than the reward.

I'd love to read that article

It is very much against the rules to take a tournament chip out of play. Rule 38 of the WSOP Rules is pretty clear. I'm all for souvenirs, but there's no way/reason for WSOP to differentiate between someone who is pocketing a chip as a collector and a cheater. It would never be worth the risk to me to try that.

Not an article. I found a couple rules under the 2018 WSOP rules that apply:
https://www.wsop.com/2018/2018 WSOP Tournament Rules.pdf

107. Chips in Transit: All chips must be visible at all times. Participants may not hold or transport Tournament chips in any manner that takes them out of view or out of the Tournament area. A Participant who does so will forfeit the chips and face disqualification. The forfeited chips will be taken out of play. It is never acceptable to conceal chips in any manner, whether in pockets, under clothing or in closed hands, etc. Chips must remain visible to floor staff, dealers and other Participants at all times.
40. f. Anyone found to have engaged in or attempted to engage in any act that WSOP officials believe in their sole and absolute discretion compromises or could compromise the competitive integrity of the WSOP will be subject to sanctions imposed by Rio. The nature and extent of the sanctions imposed shall be in the sole and absolute discretion of Rio and may include, but shall not be limited to, the following:
  1. FORFEITURE OF CHIPS
  2. FORFEITURE OF PRIZE MONEY
  3. EJECTION FROM AN EVENT OR THE ENTIRE WSOP TOURNAMENT
  4. LOSS OF PRIVILEGE TO PARTICIPATE IN FUTURE WSOP EVENTS
  5. EXCLUSION FROM ENTERING THE PREMISES OF CASINO AND/OR ALL DESIGNATED AFFILIATES OF RIO.
Rule 40. f. 5. does allow exclusion from "all designated affiliates" of RIO.

Now, would someone carrying a single low denom chip out of the tournament be penalized to the maximum, probably not, but it's a risk I'm not willing to take as a chip collector.

Thanks. I missed that one. It's:

38. Non-value WSOP chips are used for all Events and are the exclusive property of Rio and may not be removed from the Event area. Participants found to be transferring chips from one Event to another or from one Participant to another, or removing chips from play for any other reason, including but not limited to, taking chips as souvenirs, will be subject to penalty in strict accordance with Rules 40, 113, and 114.

so in other words if you take some chips, you better not take 1 or 2, you should pocket like a rack of hi denoms, to make it worth the ban?

I played in an event a few years ago. At one point they moved two tables of us from one room to another across the hall. For the move, we had to bag our chips and hold the bag up in front of us as we walked to the new location.

Yeah, I've seen them do this, and to be honest I would expect nothing less. These are the marquis poker tournaments for the whole world. Hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars are on the line in every bracelet event. Game integrity should be of the utmost importance. I don't have much sympathy for a chip enthusiast trying to pocket a chip in those circumstances.

Played the main event in 2005 & 2006. I never considered taking a chip, but to be fair I didn't have chip fever at that time...or know that I had it anyways.

Is the pic above the new WSOP chips or from years past?? "WORLD SERIES OF POKER" mold???
Zoomed in...

I’d go as far as calling those ugly.
Most of the base chips are okay, with a custom house mold, unique spot pattern, and decent color combinations. It's the addition of non-matching colored inlays that give them that butt-ugly Paulson Classics appearance.
