WSOP Chip Usage History – 2007 Rio Secondary Paulson Set

This Paulson set was introduced in 2007 to partially replace the Bud Jones chips primarily used at the WSOP between 2005 - 2006. They have been used in conjunction with the Paulson primary set since 2007 but are the secondary chips used in most (but not all) smaller tournaments and non-NLHE fields. The core lower denominations version 1 chips were replaced by the new version 2 chips in 2018.

The following chip uses apply to bracelet events only.

5 Royal Red

Years Active – 2007 – 2014
First known use - 2007 Event 14 $1,500 Seven Card Stud
Edgespots - 8A18 style 19
Edgespot Colors – Bahama Blue and Mustard

Most people not overly familiar with the WSOP's history might be surprised how often a T5 chip has been used. Between 2007 and 2014 they were used as ante chips in early stage $1.5k and $2k entry draw and stud tournaments like Seven Card Stud, Seven Card 8OB, Razz, and 1.5K NL 2-7 Lowball Draw. They were also used in the 2009 $2k Limit Hold ‘Em event that saw opening blinds of 30-60. Besides being used as T5 chips at least 21 times, these are often used as rebuy, add on, or bounty chips in events like the 2012 $10k NLHE Heads-Up Championship, 2011 NLHE Triple Chance, and in 2010 in the 5k PLO, 5k PLO8, and 10k PLO. These chips no longer see any play as starting stacks have quickly increased over the years making T5 chips obsolete.

25, 100, 500, 1,000, and 5,000 Version 1

Years Active – 2007 – 2017
First known use - 2007 Event 5 $2,500 Hi-Lo Omaha Eight or Better and Seven Card Eight or Better
Edgespots - 8A18 style 19

25 – Lime Green
Edgespot Colors – Orchid and Grape

100 – Grey
Edgespot Colors – Russet and Sea Green

500 - Blurple
Edgespot Colors – Apricot and Aqua

1,000 - Arc Yellow
Edgespot Colors – Moss Green and Red

5,000 - Fuchsia
Edgespot Colors – Off White/Radient Red

These are the core chips that were used for smaller tournaments and most draw and stud tournaments between 2007 and 2017. Although not used at most NLHE and Special events, they are usually used in the non-NLHE 10k Championship events. The Lime Green 25 chips were not always used in 5k and 10k events making them the least used of the five chips in this set. The Fuchsia 5,000 chips were occasionally replaced by the Quarter pies 5,000 chips in some special events where the secondary set was used. The Blurple 500 and Arc Yellow 1,000 were used in the 2016 and 2017 111,111 One Drop while the other three chips were not. The Arc Yellow was the most used of these five chips being used in the 2014 The Big One For One Drop.

These chips were replaced in 2018 by the Version 2 secondary chips and have not been used since. It is unclear if the WSOP ever plans to use these chips again.

25, 100, 500, 1,000, and 5,000 Version 2

Years Active – 2018 - 2019
First known use – 2018 Event 2 $10,000 No Limit Hold ‘Em Super Turbo Bounty
Edgespots - 3TSA18214

25 – Munzell Green
Edgespot Colors – Sunrise and Blurple

100 – Russet
Edgespot Colors – Pink and Pale Green

500 - Orchid
Edgespot Colors – Lime Green and Arc Yellow

1,000 - Daisy
Edgespot Colors – Light Blue and Hot Pink

5,000 - Salmon
Edgespot Colors – Yellow and Coffee

These chips were introduced in 2018 to replace the version 1 chips being used in smaller tournaments and most draw and stud tournaments. They are used in most 10k Championships besides the NLHE Main Event and many of the lower buy-in non-NLHE events like Seven card, limit draw, and mix games.

25 - 43 tournaments
100 - 60 tournaments
500 - 62 tournaments
1,000 - 61 tournaments
5,000 - 58 tournaments

The 25s were not always used in 2019 due to the big blind ante structure. The Salmon 5,000 chips were sometimes replaced by the Quarter Pies 5,000 chips in the 2018 10k Horse, 50k Poker Players Championship, and the 2019 NLHE 50k High Roller Final Fifty. The Russet 100s weren't used in the 2019 50k Final Fifty NLHE High Roller. The Orchid 500s were the only chip in the set used in the 2019 100k NLHE High Roller.

These Version 2 chips are the first to use the custom WSOP house mold.

5,000 Sky Blue Quarter Pies

Years Active - 2007 - 2019
First known use – 2007 Event 39 $50,000 Horse Championship
Edgespots – Quarterpie style 3
Edgespot Colors – Chocolate and Watermelon

These chips were introduced in 2007 to be used at the 50k HORSE Championship event that would later become the Poker Players Championship in 2010 and were used 24 times. They were used at the 50k HORSE in 2007 and 2008 and at every Poker Players Championship since 2010 but were not used in the 2009 50k HORSE Championship in favor of the Fuchsia 5,000 chips. They were also used at the 111,111 One Drop events in 2013, 2015, and 2017 and the Big One For One Drop in 2014 and 2018. Outside of these special events they have been used at the 10k HORSE Championships in 2015 and 2018, 3k HORSE events in 2016 and 2017, 3k PLO8 in 2016, and the 25k PLO 8-Handed event in 2016. In 2019 they were used at the 50k NLHE Final Fifty and 100k High Rollers.

25,000 Indian Blue Version 1

First known use - 2007 Event 5 $2,500 Hi-Lo Omaha Eight or Better and Seven Card Eight or Better
Edgespots - 8A18 style 19
Edgespot Colors – Carrot and Mint Green

These chips were introduced in 2007 to coincide with the version 1 secondary chips. They were used in most events in which the lower denom version 1 chips were between 2007 and 2017 but were occasionally replaced by the Black 25k Quarter Pie chips in special events. They were also inexplicably used in the 2014 1K PLO event along side the primary set. These chips were replaced in 2018 by the 25k Moss secondary version 2 chip and have not been used since.

25,000 Moss Version 2

These chips were introduced in 2018 to replace the Indian Blue 25k version 1 chips. They are typically used in conjunction with the lower denom version 2 chips and were used 31 times in 2018 but have been replaced by the Charcoal Quarter Pie 25k chips three times; the 2018 10k HORSE, 50k Poker Players Championship, and The Big One For One Drop. In 2019 they were used 26 times and were only replaced by the Charcoal Quart Pie 25ks in the 50k NLHE Final Fifty.

These Version 2 chips are the first to use the custom WSOP house mold.

25,000 Charcoal Quarter Pies

In 2019 they were only used once at the 50k NLHE Final Fifty High Roller.

100,000 White Version 1

100k.png

Years Active - 2012 - 2019
First known use – 2012 Event 45 $50,000 Poker Players Championship
Edgespots – 8A18 style 19
Edgespot Colors – Blue Grain and Black

These chips were introduced in 2012 to be used at the Poker Players Championship. Since their introduction, they have been the most randomly used high denom chip at the WSOP seeing 25 various events. They were used at the Poker Players Championship in 2012 and 2013 before being replaced by the 43mm Canary Yellow in 2014 and 2016 (No 100k chips were used in 2015) but were again used in 2017 and 2018. They have been used at every 111,111 One Drop in 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2017 and for one of the three Big One For One Drops in 2018.

These chips also saw some use at 10k events like the 2013 PLO, 2016 PLO 8-Handed, 2016 HORSE, and 2013, 2015, and 2016 NLHE Heads-Up Championships as well as the 25k NLHE 6-Handed event in 2013. They have been used alongside the primary set in 2014 in the 1k NLHE Seniors event, the 2016 3k NLHE, and the second Millionaire Maker tournament in 2014. Lastly, these chips have occasionally showed up in four normal events; The strange 2016 1.5k Mixed Omaha PLO8/Omaha 8OB/Big O event, the 2016 1.5k NLHE/PLO 8-Handed event, the 2016 4k PLO 6-Handed event, and the 3k HORSE event held in 2017.

In 2019 they were used only twice in the 50k NLHE Final Fifty and 100k High Rollers.

100,000 Apricot Version 2

100kapricot.png

Years Active – 2018 - 2019
First known use – 2018 Event 2 $10,000 No Limit Hold ‘Em Super Turbo Bounty
Edgespots - 3TSA18214
Edgespot Colors – Dark Red and Aqua

These chips were introduced alongside the rest of the version 2 secondary set in 2018. Although the rest of those chips actively replaced a version 1 chip, these did not. The White 100k chips were still used twice in 2018 in special events. The Apricot chips see the majority of play when a high denom chip is needed however, showing up 16 times at tables in their inaugural year and 11 more times in 2019.

They were used at many of the 10k Championship events in 2018 being featured at the HORSE, PLO8, Seven Card 8OB, NLHE 6-Handed, and the NLHE Heads-Up Championship. They were also used at some of the high roller events such as the 10k NLHE Super Turbo Bounty, 50k NLHE High Roller, and 100k NLHE High Roller Events.

These Version 2 chips are the first to use the custom WSOP house mold.

100,000 43mm Oversized Canary Yellow

100kyellow.png

Years Active - 2014 - 2017
First known use – 2014 Event 46 $50,000 Poker Players Championship
Edgespots – 4A18 style 7
Edgespot Colors – Radiant Red and Indian Blue

These chips are a bit of an odd one. They were seemingly introduced to be used at special events only premiering at the Poker Players Championship and also used at the Big One For One Drop in 2014. Then, in 2015 they were only used twice: the 10k PLO and 25k PLO 8-Handed. These aren’t normal tournaments but are far from the special high visibility bracelet events the WSOP has become known for. In 2016 they once again were used at the Poker Players Championship for a final time and the 25k PLO 8-Handed events. Although only used twice in each of the first three years of existence, they showed up four times in 2017; The 1.5k NLHE/PLO 8-Handed Mixed Event, the 10k PLO8, the 10k NLHE 6-Handed, and again in the 25k PLO 8-handed.

Then the 2018 WSOP came and went and these chips were absolutely nowhere to be found. No new 100k chips were introduced in the secondary set but instead they were replaced in tournaments you would expect to see these used in with the 100k White and Apricot chips above. It is unclear why these chips did not grace the tables in 2018 or whether we can expect a return in 2019.

250,000 43mm Oversized Lavender

Years Active - 2014 - 2016
First known use – 2014 Event 57 The Big One For One Drop
Edgespots – 4A18 style 7
Edgespot Colors – Pink and Lemon Green

These chips were introduced in 2014 to be used at The Big One For One Drop. The starting stacks of this event was so large it actually featured 250k chips! The second and final appearance of these chips was the 2016 111,111 One Drop event. It is unclear if these chips will ever see play again but appear to have been dropped in favor of just using the 500k chips below.

-Primary and Secondary Usage-

It is a misnomer that these secondary chips are for non-NLHE events only. The WSOP determines which set to use based on field sizes and what other tournaments around the same time are using. Because the NLHE events are typically the largest fields the Primary set is used in most of them. A few examples are:

2018 1.5k HORSE event 15 used the Primary set
2018 10K NLHE Super Turbo Bounty event 59 used the Secondary set
2017 1k PLO event 25 used the Primary Set
2017 5k NLHE 6-handed event 36 used the Secondary set

The chips used at the WSOP are also not exclusively split up between the Primary and Secondary sets. On occasion they will use a mix of the two without any real explanation.

In the 2018 One For One Drop the Primary 1K Canary Yellow was used with the Secondary set
In the 2016 3k NLHE the Secondary 100k White chips were used with the Primary set
In the 2014 1k PLO the Secondary 25K Indian Blue were used with the Primary set
In the 2014 the 1.5k NLHE Millionaire Maker and 1K NLHE Seniors the Secondary 100k White chips were used with the Primary Set
In the 2011 the 25k NLHE Heads-Up Championship used both the Primary and Secondary sets
In the 2009 and 2011 5k NLHE Triple Chance event the Secondary 5 Royal Red chips were used as rebuy chips
In the 2008 and 2009 the 10k NLHE Heads-Up Championship used both the Primary and Secondary sets
In the 2009 2k Limit HE and the 1.5k PLO8 the Secondary 5 Royal Red were used for antes

Great post! I believe those yellow T100Ks, and black T500ks are 43mm based on the inverted H&C. The Purple T250K are probably the same. Never seen the Met Silver T1M so I can't comment on those.

To the best of my knowledge:

100,000 39mm w/8A18 (Paulson 19) spots -- White with Blue Grain/Black

100,000 43mm w/4A18 (Paulson 7) spots -- Canary Yellow with Radiant Red/Indian Blue?

250,000 43mm w/4A18 (Paulson 7) spots -- Lavender? with Pink/Lemon Green?

500,000 43mm w/418 (Paulson 7) spots -- Black with White

1,000,000 43mm? w/418 (Paulson 7) spots -- Metallic Silver with Grey

Absolutely love those quarter pies, have long debated doing a WSOP CPC tribute set based on those.

Still can’t get over the non-matching Inlays on the newer house molds. I’m a fan of house molds and those have potential, but the Inlays just kill it for me.

My bad on the sizes. I rushed this a little and didn't due my full due diligence. Just checked the chip report and the Metallic Silvers are 43mm as well.

1,000,000 43mm? w/418 (Paulson 7) spots -- Metallic Silver with Grey

Checking the chip report and it says the 1M are Metallic Silver with Almond. None of the pictures look almond to me at all. Also confirms that the 500ks are Black with white. They don't list colors for the 100k or 250k so I have no idea. The reason why I went with Yellow over Canary Yellow is that 2 of the primary chips are Canary Yellow and they look slightly different. That assumption could be very wrong though.

I love the V1. Much more than the primary set even.

That’s why I was gauging the interest for a GCOP rebirth - maybe as Hybrid chips.

https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/interest-in-rebirth-of-gcop.34970/

I have even done a basis for inlay design already in case GCOP artwork could not be reused :

https://www.pokerchipforum.com/thre...-a-wsop-2007-tribute-inlay.28860/#post-535039

The GCOP chips are the ones I regret missing out on the most out of any group buy done here or on CT especially in hindsight with the CPS group buy. I couldn't justify getting them now unless they were china clays though.

I didn't check it -- the 1M could certainly be Almond (or even Off-White), but the report is usually accurate.

It is odd that the 100k and 250k chip submissions didn't include spot colors, but I'm pretty sure about the white 100k chip spot colors.

I updated the white edgespots you gave on the white. I trust you on those. On the other 100k and 250k it doesn't even have the base colors for some reason! It's most certainly these:

264693

That is why I don't have any colors for these yet. If I can't find anything I'll probably just use what you provided.

Probably noteworthy to mention that the 2018 secondary v2 set is made using a new WSOP house mold, using non-matching inlay designs from the 2007 set and a unique-to-WSOP 3TSA18214 spot pattern.

Also, some of the v1 chips were used last year, so I'm not sure the have been totally retired.

Update:

-Added note that these guides apply to bracelet events only
-Added edgespot spots for version 2 chips and included note about them being the first to use WSOP house mold (thanks BGinGA)
-Added edgespot colors for the 2 quarterpie chips found in the Nevada gaming chip and token report

Added the house mold note and the spot pattern. Thank you for the information. I had no clue what to call the edgespots.

If the v1 chips were used last year it wasn't in any bracelet events to the best of my knowledge. They may have showed up in side/satellite events. I added a note that this post only applies to bracelet events. I don't have the time, resources, energy, or desire to figure out side and satellite event chip usage as well.

Seems like I remember seeing pics of the white 100K chip (?) being used, most likely in the 'new WSOP chips' thread from last year.

Oh yeah they have. I broke out my post by chip but grouped the 25, 100, 500, 1k, and 5k because they are usually used together. These have all been 'retired' to my knowledge. I thought you meant these were used in an event in 2018. Just a misunderstanding.

April update:

-Assigned colors to every chip. If anyone disagrees with anything I am more than willing to listen
-Fixed some style and continuity errors

The quarter pies make such an interesting random pattern down the side of a barrel. Gives a completely different feel to a set. I feel like that style is generally under-represented

Meanwhile at the Event #9 $600 deepstack final table live on CBS All Access streaming right now....

Only two chips on the table, the 500k Blacks and 1M Metallic Silver. Confirmation that the 1M chip edgespots are almond at least.

These were used with the primaries including the Forest Green 25ks and Hawaii Flower 100ks which haven't been used outside of a Main Event since 2014 before this year. The 500k Black chips were used at the 1k Super Turbo Bounty final table as well.

Clearly this is the last year of the WSOP being at the Rio and they don't give a shit about chip usage. Or maybe they just saw my project and said hey, let's screw with this guy.

The 2019 WSOP is officially over ending yesterday!

Quick update through 2019 is done for the Secondary Set. I marked all chips as through 2019 as I assume this will be the last year any of these chips will be used.

Every chip that was used in 2018 was again used in 2019 at least once making none of the chips technically obsolete.

I am always looking for better pictures if you have any.

If you notice anything that seems wrong or have any questions feel free to speak up.
