WSOP Chis Usage History – 2005 Bud Jones Rio Primary Set

In 2005 the WSOP was hosted somewhere besides the Binion’s Horseshoe for the first time ever moving to the Rio. These were commissioned to serve as the chips used for the ever-growing tournament fields at the World Series. They served as the primary chips in 2005 and 2006 but were replaced in this role by the 2007 Paulson Primary and Secondary chips in 2007. Between 2007 – 2013 (and 2015) the only times these chips touched the felt in a bracelet event was at the annual $500 Casino Employees Only NLHE events.

Not only did these chips continue to see playing time through 2019, they actually saw an increase in use in later years. In 2014 they were busted out for the 1.5k NLHE Monster Stack, the first time they were seen in a non-employee field since 2007. They later served as a tertiary set to the Paulsons seeing the tables 9 times in 2017, 14 times in 2018, and 19 times in 2019. They are usually used in low buy in specialty events like the Monster Stack, Little One Drop, Ladies Event, and some Giant and Colossus events. They were used in the 2015 WSOP.com NLHE online event that played the final table live in Las Vegas.

The following chip uses apply to bracelet events only.

Use with 2007 Primary Paulson Set

These chips have seen some mixed use with 2007 primary Paulson set:

In the 2019 $500 Big Fifty Event these chips were used with the 25k Bud Jones secondary hot pink chips alongside the 5k Lavender (which were only being used with the Secondary set at this time) and 50k Tan chips due to the WSOP running out of chips from the Primary set on day 1D.
In the 2019 $800 NLHE Deepstack the Grey 1M chips were used with the Bud Jones secondary set.

Forgot the light tan 50k

You are 100% right I completed missed them. I also corrected a mistake I made at the top. Despite the Main Event final table being held at the Binion's in 2005, these chips were still used. I'm trying to find more info about the early use of these chips but the only videos I can find of the ESPN broadcasts in 2005 and 2006 are grainy garbage videos on Youtube.

April update:

-Committed to colors. Bud Jones experts prove me wrong!
-Added another mediocre pick of the Tan 50ks. Still looking for a better picture.

Have we seen, or is there a $250k chip in this set? Or just 100k and 500k?

No 250k. Not on the Nevada gaming chip and token report and never seen in play.

They only introduced the 500k when they started reusing the set in 2015. By then they had retired the Paulson primary 250k and probably figured out it was a pointless denom. The Paulson secondary Lavender 250ks were the last of that denom used in the 2016 for the One Drop.

BTW if anyone ever has any questions like these I am more than willing to answer if I have one!

They appear so but haven't been able to officially confirm. The chip and token report didn't say so and I haven't been able to see direct stacks yet. We should know at the final table I'm sure.

The lavender 5k is my favorite WSOP chip of all, looked so good stacked next to the yellow 1k. I like the 100k mint as well.

Have been playing g in WSOP on and off for 15+ years. I do miss some of the sets that they 'retired'.

I love this thread.
Now I'm think about making my next Chip Design Study for these Chips.

Question:
These Chips are retired, right?
But what happen to thousands of Chips which are not in use anymore?

Actually most of these chips are still active and have been used multiple times in 2019 in the smaller buy-in tournaments. The 5 chip and the 10,000 chip are the only two that are unofficially "retired" as they have not been used since 2005.

When the set is officially retired the chips will most likely be destroyed per Nevada Gaming Commission regulations.

Actually, I don’t believe there is anything stating that NCV or tournament chips “have” to be destroyed? Only gaming cheques.
Let’s hope when the WSOP moves to the Caesar’s Convention Center that somehow all the Rio tournament chips become available. It would be the greatest thing....EVER!

Keep hoping... is my response to that

Hmmm -- the final two days of the main event were still held at the Horseshoe. Does anyone know which chips were used for those two days of play?

I kind of mention it up above in the thread:

They used the Rio chips as best as I can tell. The final table used the Tan 50k that the 2004 Binion's set didn't have. Double checking with the videos available is tough because they are Standard Def garbage.

I kind of mention it up above in the thread:

The only specific comment I see regarding the final two days at the Horseshoe addresses only the "50k Tan with Chocolate" chip. So you're extrapolating from that to implay that the rest of the Rio chips were also used those final two days?

Thanks...

Not just that. It's a heavily educated assumption based on a variety of factors I have seen. I just don't have high res pictures of chips with the faces showing they are Rio chips to prove it.

The 5k Rio BJ chips were based on the 10k Binion's chips and vice versa. This makes it more difficult to know for a fact which chips are being used from stack pictures.

However when you look at:

1) Final table chip counts and the amount of chips on the table.
2) The fact that the Rio chips were used earlier in the tournament and the 50ks are Rio chips
3) In the Dannenmann pic it makes far more sense that they would be using 50k and 10k chips from the same set as opposed to 50k and 5k chips from different sets...

Evidence heavily suggests the Rio chips were used at the final table of the 2005 WSOP Main Event even though it was held at Binion's.

Quick update for the usage through 2019.

T25s were not used due to Big Blind Ante structure. 10ks and 50ks made a surprise return this year. 1M and 5M chips were added this year as well.
