This happened a while ago, so it's too late now. But I wonder if they looked into it or if I should have pushed them to do so.
This happened at "The Brook" in NH (used to be a dumpy cardroom; then purchased by Nevada company - upgraded and nice. eye in the sky cameras everywhere) Saturday afternoon $75 freezout - great tournament usually gets 90-100 people. This place is FULL of regs. If there's a 100 people there, I probably recognize 75 of the faces.
We were on level 7 - I got dealt a card that I noticed had a big thumbnail indentation. It was a Jack. I took note and said nothing. Very next hand, I caught an A with the same thumbnail mark. It was like A6 or something, so I folded, but I instructed the dealer to put the cards aside. At showdown, the guy next to me played another A with the same mark. I called the dealers attention to the three cards.
He couldn't see it at first. Nobody could see it. I showed him the marks and said "you can definitely feel it and when the light catches it right, you can see it." The dealer then noticed it and called floor. The other players at the table were getting annoyed like I was wasting their time, making something out of nothing. Guy next to me said "if you''re the only one who can see it, why'd you say anything?" I said, "because the guy who's marking the cards can probably see it too." Then another guy, one of the room's better regs said "well don't look at me, I just got back." Which was true - he'd gotten annoyed by something earlier, said he needed a walk, and disappeared for like 30-40 min. Floor replaced the deck, dealer thanked me, play resumed without any further incident.
I'm 95% certain that somebody at that table was marking the cards that day. I mean, I saw three marked cards and they were A, A, J - that's no coincidence. But also, this was level 7 - we'd used that deck for levels 1, 3, and 5 - if those cards were marked from a previous day, I'm sure I would have noticed it during those levels. If somebody were marking the cards that day, I'm pretty sure they could have figured out exactly who, just by looking at the footage of our table for an hour or two. Maybe they did - I'm guessing they didn't; that's resources to spend that are probably thin at a place offering $75 MTTs. But it sort of gnawed at me, that I should have talked to the floor later, explained the whole thing, and asked for followup.
Thoughts?

May not have been intentional. Some players press hard and lift up forcefully. I had a whole deck get messed up this way in my home game recently.

I don't know if this was a hand dealt game, but I noted marked cards in the casino last weekend, and when I alerted the dealer, he said it was due to the new card shuffler. Apparently it was damaging the cards. We had to change out quite a few cards when I was playing.

Good job being honest.

I had this happen at my home game too a few months ago. Really freaked me out because at first I thought it was nefarious.

If this can happen on expensive full-plastics and f*ckin' acetates, why on earth aren't we using much cheaper one-time-use plastic-coated ones, anyway?:nailbite:

While we're doing this, why the heck are we using clay soft worthless disc's... They make plastic ones that'll work just the same!

Kidding. I actually moved to cheaper plastic cards. Prefer plastic to shuffle, but I don't get too bent when the deck is done after a month or two, as it cost a buck....

Wow. Do you guys all realistically think it could have been an innocent mistake? I only saw 3 marked cards, and they turned out to be 2 Aces and a Jack.

I think the 'cap cards with chip and peek' is generally responsible for these marks.
But then, I you really wanted to mark a card, this would be a good way to do it.

Hell, I can hardly see the picture side to begin with.
Yup. It happens often actually.

Personally, for me to accuse someone of something as serious as cheating, I'm going to need some really strong evidence. I'm always last to the party on accusations. I'd rather be the last person right about accusations as opposed to the first person wrong.

Correct; but still "Fear is what guards the Innocent"

It very well could be. You can decide what it is or isn't. But I'll say I've found plenty of damaged and marked cards and never thought the players did it. But I wasn't there, your asking a pile of degens online.

My point was, it happens alot with people bending cards over clay chips to peek. Heck, we had a post last week on it. It could be someone was taking down the table, or it could have been a noob who bends the cards more with an ace because he's so excited.

I don't know if anyone was marking. Eh. *shrug*

Or because he got pissed when his aces got cracked.

I tend toward this myself. But suggesting that “somebody” at a table of ten is cheating is a little easier.

Yep, and I strongly discourage my home game players from doing this. I've thrown away or consolidated a few Desjgn decks that got marked in this way.

What plastic cards cost a buck??

Other solution to OP is to surreptitiously thumbnail mark every card he is dealt....This will very quickly defeat any cheating efforts.

Admittedly, I think most of these marks are done much more often by CARELESS players than by cheaters.

These did.

Here’s an example of what happens at my last game. Brand new set up of poker sized Desijns. About 2 hours in @krafticus noticed a big indent on one card. We pulled the deck immediately and put another set up in play.

Going through that deck now there are seven cards with noticeable indents. This pictures won't show them but you can see and feel in person. Mostly feel though. I don't see a noticeable pattern in card selection and all the indents are in the same exact spot on the cards.

I am 95% sure it was my idiot brother who does not play frequently and once destroyed not one but two setups of copags on one night. He is probably doing that chip thing which I will now watch for.

If somebody killed a DesJgn setup of mine like that . . .

Absolutely plausible it wasn’t intentional. Not sure what info marking all broadways the same would really even give you...people generally have a couple broadways anyways. If it was aces only then yea, it looks super sketch, but there was a jack with the same mark too

I've been that guy before, noticed a mark and mentioned it to the dealer before I looked at it "if this is an Ace or King we probably need a new deck" and it was in fact a king... Intentionally or not I think you were correct to bring it up and insist on a new deck. Period.

Happens all the time in casinos weather intentional or not - if you notice a marked card then indented, marked on the back or the back deaign faded somehow or anything else, have the dealer call the floor and replace the deck...they probably have hundreds of. Ew decks to put in play
