The question basically is, which is more important to you, nice chips or a nice table?

For those who need further definition: Would you rather play on an appropriate sized dining room table with Paulsons, or would you rather play on a table made by Chanman with Monte Carlos or Nexgen Pro Classics?

Yes, I do know what the name of this forum is! :)

I'm actually okay with China clays or the likes. I really dislike playing on dining tables even with a topper. It retracts from the poker feel to me. Whereas the chips, as long as they are playable actual poker chips, I can make it work.

For a long night of poker order of importance:

1. People playing with/against
2. Chairs, comfortable seating is crucial
3. Lighting—need to be able to see!
4. Table needs some type of padding to lift cards
5. Cards. Please no paper cards!
6. Chips

Once we get to #6 it is the icing on the cake. We here at CPF have taken hosting home games beyond what most people consider adequate and take for granted a lot of the previous items on the list as understood.

There is also a middle ground. At a minimum I would like an actual neoprene topper or a base level generic table. In that case I would prefer minimum table with Paulsons vs Dice/slugged chips and a Chanman (no offense to Tony's tables, they are great!).

Playing on a hard table is the worst option. That said, I will play with any table/chips/cards vs no poker at all!

Chips by a mile, and it's not even close.

Even the worst dining room table can be made playable by throwing a blanket over it, but you can't do anything to improve dice chips on a $2000 custom table.

Is this technically cheating? You're altering the rules of the question by make the table nicer.

Fine. I'd rather play on cardboard boxes or even on the damn rug (if using nice chips) than with junk.

Happy?

You're clearly too new to have heard of epic heads-up-on-chair battles at meet-ups. It's all about the chips.

OK, so just to be clear, you'd rather play on this with some Paulsons than a Chanman with some Monte Carlos?

Hehe, I am new, yes. And I hope to learn much, much more.

I've done both many times, and I will take the nice chips unless the table is so poor as to damage them.

I've spent tons more time and money on my tables than on my chips, so I guess that answers it for me.

I like rhodeman’s list. My twists:
Rule number 1 - u need zoo animals (action guys), without them you might as well skip poker and watch tv. Nobody goes to a zoo to watch the zoo keepers (nits).
Rule 2 - comfortable chairs are really important - especially for those 12 hour sessions.
Rule 3 - I understand the importance of lighting but degenerates will hold flashlights if necessary.
Rule 4 - Table padding is a must and the table can’t be flimsy. I played on a folding table once in a high stakes game and a player leaned on the table to stand up and it collapsed. Try working out the bank after that disaster. What a mess!
Rule 5 - agreed - No paper cards, ever!! And a new set up every game in my opinion.
Rule 6 - I love nice chips and am so addicted to buying them, but if the right people want to play I will play with anything. At one home game we ran out of chips and had to use dice and monopoly pieces as high denomination chips. Nobody cared, the game was that good.
Don’t forget Rule 7 - alcohol. At my game, if I don’t know for sure u have a job and u cant produce a w-2, u must drink 5 shots In the first 90 mins of the game. Reduces the pro edge.

What I think is ironic is that on a site devoted to the love of chips, where we endless discuss chip construction, materials, sound, cleaning, value, design,etc...the majority here feel the table is more important!
Btw, I vote good table too

No, not ironic, and not the majority here. It's only 45 misguided souls.

The majority of chip aficionados on this site don't even *respond* to threads with "table" in the title. :)

Congratulations, you joined 1.5 weeks ago and you already know that most people covet tables > chips. Playing on a quality table is a huge plus. However, it’s all about great chips, chips, and m0re chips!!!

I cant believe how many people answered incorrectly.

Please leave lol. This isn't the poker table forum.

This! For a moment there I thought I had wandered off into the pokertableforum.com or something :)

Edit: I see @Perthmike beat me to it

Nice table, poor chips. It's long hours at the table so respect your spine. And it's easier to replace chips than table.

That logic to me gives the edge to chips actually: it’s easy to get your hand on decent chips, but I understand if not everyone can find the space and cash for a great table.

So not having a poker table is excusable in my eyes, but not having decent chips is incomprehensible :)

You are more likely to replace your chips anyway for various reasons

Could we somehow get Paulson to make a THC table out of a mega oversized chip? Like a coffee table book about coffee tables... Except with a poker chip.

My ordering of things required probably falls in line with most people here.
1. Friends to play with (a table of badtards is the WORST) - it is free
2. Lighting - you can steal lamps from other rooms in the house so this still counts as free
3. Chairs - I found mine on craigslist when a nearby casino got rid of theirs so that was only 15 a chair
4. Cards - NO PAPER CARDS - I love Fournier - after currency exchange I would say 31 for that
5. Table - Dining room table doesn't cut it, but you can find those Barrington tables on sale for 100 from time to time
6. HOT DOG ROLLER - I am a fat guy so food is important (why do people list important stuff and forget this?!?!?) and the hundo invested in this will pay for itself very quickly
7. Chips - and more chips.

Before we get another comment about how this is not pokertableforum.com, realize that those of us here at PCF are in the extreme minority. I know we all love great chippies but we got to be realistic here. Not only is the average person not going to care about the chips much, but truly great chippies are out of the price range for average people. It is just fact.
