OK, some background...

I'm been on a horrible streak of run-bad since winning the ME at the WCB (about 5 weeks ago). Every single session has been brutal. Either card dead, or when I do get really good cards, I'm experiencing second best syndrome... Or I'm getting it in good and getting sucked out on by complete degens with more money than sense.

I understand that in the long run, these people's play is -EV, and that I'm playing solid poker (making good decisions overall). However, I watched my BR (my only source of poker fundage) dwindle significantly.

The stakes were pretty exclusively $1/2 NL cash games. I played several times at our local casino and a number of times at our weekly Wed night bar game. This Wed night game is a very high variance game. If you're running good, expect to cash big. However, many people play ATC and have lots of money. There's a lot of action in this game, which routinely sees 2-3 poker pros in attendance. It's been a highly profitable game for me, but with the obliteration of my BR, I made the decision to scale back my play at these venues for the moment. I determined that one, I don't like the gambol-fest nature as much as my home game atmosphere, and two my BR can't support the variance right now.

I decided I was going to start hosting more regularly, in lieu of playing these more aggressive outside games... which brings me to why I'm baaaack! I hosted last night ($.25/.50 NL cash w/ a $40 starting BI, that progressed to the table avg). The list of characters was a mix of a couple fishy players and solid LAGs. I cashed out w/ $400 on the night on my orig $40 BI. Now the cash was nice, the real excitement came from my getting off my losing streak! I felt like I played my normal game and did well (which on a side note, has evolved from uber TAG to a mix of TAG and LAG).

It's just good to have a check in the W column (and come to the realization I should be hosting more).

Shouldn't have used your "one time" so many times at the WCB ;)

Now, I don't think I actually said "one time" a single time at the WCB... But I think that a lot of run-good was used up at Jeff's that day... I was starting to think I was seriously "paying" for it on some sort of cosmic level.

congrats...............

I'm on a mini two session win myself. Up 400 in the two sessions. I also prefer the home game, .25/.50 to 1/1 stakes.

You didn't ask, but my opinion is that a 40.00 buy in is a little short for a .25/.50 game. 60-80 imo.

I could not agree with you more. However, I sometimes start with a lower buyin (such as 80bb) to facilitate the more beginner card players that might want to come. The table pretty quickly progressed to $60+ buyins.

The solid players would rather start deeper, but they often have no problem with the $40 start, since they know it'll attract "newer players" to the game.

Grats! I am sure it feels good to be back.

Like I really need another set, but those benny's look really nice.

DrStrange

Those are definitely my "forever" set. Can't see ever parting with them. Just the perfect breakdown for a $.25/.50 game, awesome colors, and in amazing condition. Now that said, I hate saying "never"... lol I suppose for the right price (and assuming I had a set to replace them with)....

The quarters are sexy as shit.

Tonights game is 60. That feels short to me, lol. Our other .25/.50 games range between 80-100 for the buy in.

^ Shamelessly fishing for "likes" with the chip pr0n post :)

Thanks dd

You've been going through the proverbial 'curse of the new table' syndrome. When someone has built a new poker table, they invariably end up on a losing steak wherever they play. This can only be overcome by copious amounts of beer supplemented by loose play.

I like it!

That's my strategy going into tonight's game :)

those are sexyyy quarters, nice score ;)

Not sure if everyone was around here for that part of my chip journey, but I searched for a year to find quarters. I explored everything from Custom Paulson hotstamps through Apache, to many racks of various Paulson chips purchased in search of a relabel project, when someone (think it was BG) suggested using the live Binions $1 chips as a quarter.

An awesome member named Andrew ;) agreed to help me out by harvesting a few racks of Binions to use as my quarters. An awesome designer (p5woody) did the artwork) and the rest is history! In the end, these wound up costing me around $1.50/chip, but I'm happier than had I gone with Apache hotstamped Paulsons.

Quarters aint easy folks... I see new members posting WTB ads all the time, I chuckle...

I almost made this exact mistake at one point, I learned just a little bit more and found out that EVERYBODY is looking for "just a rack or two of quarters to fill out my set...".

Yeah, I definitely almost posted the thread that starts with "So everything's great guys, thanks for all the help, but the one thing I can't seem to find is fractionals, could someone point me to all the eBay/classified links for the fracs? kthxbai."

Congrats on finally running good. Love the Benny $1 chips. I have the same chip for my labeled mix RHC cash set. Wish I had more. :(

Oddly enough that movie was filmed where I live. :)

About the donkeys. Our local poker community has a lot of skilled players. But my passion didn't get ignited until I played a neighbor's small stakes game. He had a nice setup. The rest is history.

I'd personally like to play with skilled players. However I also would like to think that I could introduce a few others to the finer aspects of the game and ignite their passion for it. Means more players for my invite pool. :)

Edited to add a note about a player who joined the game later in the night. He's a crafty lag who has never been to my house before. He and I went to high school together and we live in the same neighborhood. I've never played with him before either. My poker knowledge on him is limited to knowing he regularly travels to Vegas to play bigger games and his passion for Vegas had spilled into a side business where he runs private traveling corporate poker/casino parties. He has been invited many times but has politely declined, indicating he had little interest in my lower stakes. This night, he indicates he'd like to come over and give it a try...

His play appears very laggish. He's very bluffy and leads out for exactly $5.50 from any position where it is limped to him. I've caught him in bluffs, and he's on his third $60 BI, largely thx to me. One Hand in particular he and I ARE at it again. He's current sitting on $110 or so.

He's on the button and I'm in LP. I look down at AA and limp (knowing our villain will bump it up). After he bumps it to $5.50, it gets a couple callers, and I bump it to $20.50 to go. LAG calls the rest fold. The point of this isn't s strat thread, so skipping the flop/turn drama the river completes everything. Four straight and a flush. I check (but I don't put LAG on anything. the LAG shoves his remaining $50+ and I eventually make the call. LAG insta mucks his air. Rebuy for the LAG. Lol.

The point of this story is that even a $.25/.50 game can get some action. LAG eventually got back close to even. He commented afterwards that he'd play my game again. [emoji14]

I am starting host 1/2 games occasionally but if lag auto bets 11x to any limpers, his $22 openings are gonna be fun lol.

if you were just a couple of hours closer this could be a fun "poker weekend".

Oddly enough. Wife picks a campground resort to go to this weekend and they have tons of daily activities. Probably a couple hundred seasonal campers here. Daily activities today include "adult beverage bingo" and "Texas Hold'em tournament". Tomorrow there's a poker run. Um, my wife read the activities schedule and laughed. Even in the north woods, she can't get away from poker. Lol.

I'm sure the tourney uses dice chips and the structure will suck, so Good thing I brought along a travel set of cash chips for when I go tilty from the tourney. The tourney will be a great place to find some players for a pickup game later on tonight. :)

Yeah, no kidding. I'm trying to put a pretty wide-use set together that needs to include nickels. NICKELS! I have folks that want to learn games and such, and another group of folks that would like to play 1/2 NL or PLO and are LAGGY as hell...

A label project is starting to look like my best option... :-)

Newbies that want to learn with nickels don't need nice Paulson chips. If you insist, get some jimky $5's and pretend the $ is a cent symbol. :)
