I've been playing around with some chip trays and I think I have a good design nailed down. I used some 2x8 lumber, cut them to size and then glued a few pieces together to get the length I wanted. I had to rotate the pieces 90 degrees so that the grain was going with the grooves to reduce tear out as well as get smoother chip slots. After milling the grooves, I cut them all to size then finished them off with some maple sides and some sanding. I'm still debating whether or not I want to hit these with some polyurethane or not. Maybe just a bit of tung oil...
I have 4 of these for myself to use to transport my rental chips. The rows fit 60 of my chips (7-15/16" long) and I make stacks of 5k using 30 chips so these trays fit 2 starting stacks per row giving me 20 starting stacks. Alternatively, if I'm doing 3k stacks I can fit 3 starting stacks per row. I also have 3 older ones which are similar but not as refined. The older ones also have briefcase style latches however I found that a even with 4 trays stacked they are very hard to tip over considering how heavy they get. With 7 of these I'm able to carry around my full set of rental chips with me.
I'll post some more photos of these with chips in them as well as the whole set & lid(s).
This is a tray for some 44mm oversized scroll mold rounders chips. Not for me though, I would only be so lucky to own a set of those. It's not done yet. I've since added another piece of darker wood to the ends, rounded the edges and will be adding recessed handles to the underside of the ends.
I'm still getting around to making some more wood chip trays to hold 100 chips each. Another work in progress.
