I've been playing around with some chip trays and I think I have a good design nailed down. I used some 2x8 lumber, cut them to size and then glued a few pieces together to get the length I wanted. I had to rotate the pieces 90 degrees so that the grain was going with the grooves to reduce tear out as well as get smoother chip slots. After milling the grooves, I cut them all to size then finished them off with some maple sides and some sanding. I'm still debating whether or not I want to hit these with some polyurethane or not. Maybe just a bit of tung oil...

I have 4 of these for myself to use to transport my rental chips. The rows fit 60 of my chips (7-15/16" long) and I make stacks of 5k using 30 chips so these trays fit 2 starting stacks per row giving me 20 starting stacks. Alternatively, if I'm doing 3k stacks I can fit 3 starting stacks per row. I also have 3 older ones which are similar but not as refined. The older ones also have briefcase style latches however I found that a even with 4 trays stacked they are very hard to tip over considering how heavy they get. With 7 of these I'm able to carry around my full set of rental chips with me.

I'll post some more photos of these with chips in them as well as the whole set & lid(s).

This is a tray for some 44mm oversized scroll mold rounders chips. Not for me though, I would only be so lucky to own a set of those. It's not done yet. I've since added another piece of darker wood to the ends, rounded the edges and will be adding recessed handles to the underside of the ends.

I'm still getting around to making some more wood chip trays to hold 100 chips each. Another work in progress.

Be careful with tung oil. I had some leakage onto white chips from it. I'm not sure if this was because the oil hadn't completely soaked into the wood (walnut).

For this application I would either use a wipe on or spray poly. Nice job on the trays, these can be a bit of a pain in the ass to make :)

Thanks for the heads up about the oil.

They are indeed pretty labor intensive. Using my CNC to cut the rows makes it a little better but all the finishing that has to go into them is a lot of work.

I'll probably add a light coat of poly the next time I'm spraying other projects.

well done sir. If I tried this I'd most likely cut off a finger or three

A few more photos of the trays. The lid is just plywood for now. I might make a new one out of maple down the road.

The ends are raised up so that even if you put the tray down on a flat surface, you can get your fingers under the handles to pick it up.

These are absolutely gorgeous and I want one. I would probably injure myself trying to make one. Simply stunning.

I'm going to make these for sale soon. I can always make one for you to your specific dimensions.

That's awesome, and can't wait to see the finished product. I don't think I'll need any customization, but it all has to wait until after the holidays. Budgets and such, you know.

Been scouring around looking for a rack to hold some of my 46mm ceramics from OWPS. These are my bounty chips. I need space for around 60-80 chips. The rack would need to be lower profil, to fit into my chip drawers. Any thoughts on something like this?

Hey Chanman,

Whats the cost for one of those trays in post #9 with or without top?

Those are $110 CAD each, which is roughly $80 USD, plus shipping.

How low profile do you need? My smaller chip racks would probably do the trick, I would just have to leave less meat at the bottom of the tray to keep the height down. It would be similar to the photo I last posted with the oversized rounders chips in it, but just 1 section rather than 3.

What's pricing on a very basic rack like that? Nothing fancy, and it doesn't need to be big, just enough for 60-80 chips. I have 40+ bounties, plus a handful of extra commem chips from each MTTD.
