My wife and I were having a discussion last night about Covid-19. We were talking about schools and how they may require students to get the vaccine to be able to return to school once one is available. For a vaccine to be effective within a community most people need to get it. My wife is worried about possible side and long term effects from a rushed and barely tested vaccine. So my question is will you get the vaccine once it available and will you have your children get it as well. If your children's school will require it to return to school does that effect your decision?

I will have no choice, so yes

I will, and I'll have my kids get it also. As I work for a health care company it will probably be required anyway.

My wife will probably make me get it.

BTW, no voting option if you have no kids.

Is there an option for not thinking there will ever be a vaccine? Aren't things like this usually added to the flu shot which just makes a guess as to this year's strain anyways?

Absolutely, the upside of community immunity drastically outweigh the side effects in my mind. If we had kids, they would be getting it too. Statistics are showing that while kids are less susceptible to death (~.02%) or serious cases, that even in asymptomatic cases they are seeing signs of lung damage which may have lasting effects. In Florida, testing is showing that kids are contracting it at ~13%, roughly on par with the rest of the population, and that's without full school exposure. As the husband of a middle school teacher, we know first hands how poor kids' hygiene or adherence to protocols is, this stuff is going to spread like wildfire within school regardless of precautions.

I already signed up for the local vaccine trial.

Never heard back though as they were giving front line workers priority.

My kids are well into adulthood and will make these decisions for themselves. Well not so much my eldest who serves in the Navy. I expect he will be required to vaccinate.

I will also judge how approvals come about. While I wouldn't wait a year, waiting two weeks or a month might seem really prudent. Like say the vaccine is declared safe the last week in October. Let's not be foolish, no harm in waiting a bit and see what comes out - I have isolated for six months, what is another couple of weeks?

Covid-19 is the single biggest "optional" risk of death I take. I know there are minimal risks associated with vaccines, but those are trivial compared to covid-19 risks.

I already have adopted the "old school" Coronavirus vaccine, AKA wear a mask. Maybe that is only ~50% effective, but it is essentially free. Cutting my risk of death in half seems like a pretty good choice to me while I wait for an effective vaccine.

Other people can fret about monsters under the bed, I would rather reduce the risk of the plague killing me -=- DrStrange

Yes i will get it and even though my child is an adult, and has free will, I have confidence in my ability to have instilled good ol' common sense in her that she will get it as well and have my grandchildren get it as well.

I lean strongly toward yes, but will evaluate at the time. My kids are adults, and while they may listen to my opinion and what Lisa and I do, they will make their own choices.

I'll probably have to. Yes.

My kids are all adults. They'll have to decide for themselves

All the so called science in the world isn't a replacement for common sense. A mother's protective instinct and intuition has evolved over many generations.

The question is whether people with common sense and intuition will have the fortitude to stand up against a ruthless wave of social pressure.

I know this won't be a popular opinion, but I hope employers don't let employees come back if they aren't vaccinated.
I suspect my employer will make it a requirement. I think they all should. Want a job? Get it done. Don't come in here and infect your colleagues.

I think this is very fair. I felt the same.

Pretty sure my casino will require this (when its available)

Probably best to move this to politics right away

Very loaded question and so many variables not accounted for. We don't know the vaccine will be lacking when it comes to testing etc.
These are assumptions.

I for myself will get it when it's available. Vaccines don't get through European and Belgian requirements processes without being good enough for me.

I also know enough people in the pharma industry to know that these companies won't take any risks when it comes to a vaccine for something like this.

Any lawyers on here? Can employers require employees to vaccinate? I see the value (planning to vaccinate myself), but seems like maybe a civil rights issue?
