I have read many times that casino chips have been destroyed when the properties that use them decide to get newer ones.
I know this is true for Vegas with regulation 12.

You guys know way more about this kind of stuff than i do.

Will there ever be another huge lot of used casino chips? And how does someone get a hold of the chips from a casino when they get newer ones.

I have talked with people who got huge lots from indian casinos in the early 90's, i imagine things have changed since then on how to go about it.

Is it true that the chips would have to come from a native american property or a riverboat nowadays?

Sometimes I read old CT threads and see how much people were buying and selling Aztars, PCA, empress, par a dice, etc.
and the amounts of chips. People getting chips for so cheap and in such great quantities. Not to mention the home market sets. It trips me out how cheap they were.

There are so few sets of 1000 or 1000+ chips out there for sale. When I see a lot of 300 chips getting charged at by eager bidders at like 1.50-2.00 a chip I wonder if there will ever be another glory day for chip enthusiasts.

It all seems really sad to me.

Thoughts?

does point defiance count as large lot? I saw some people getting a 1000ct set

I don't know anything about them. But if they let off a ton then absolutely.

Does anyone know how this came about? Who got the lot, for how much, and how it all happened? Or same question with other lots before from different casinos.

Of course there will be big sets available. Cheap set like the ones sold at the bottom of the market? Maybe not. When I first started in 2009 the common wisdom was any casino chip less than a buck was a good deal. The idea you might get a big set for $0.50/chip was crazy talk in those days.

As I recall, The Chip Room had to get special permission to buy and resell chips. Often needed a state issued license. Many states don't allow it at all - sending out of date chips to their doom.

Some of the California chips came to market as a results of an orderly liquidation of assets to pay creditors. In the case of Outpost chips the source got a storage room stacked with chips.

I think some of the quirky sets might have shady pasts - some of the last employees or creditors just grabbed bags of chips.

There are a lot more reasons to destroy old chips than save them for us.

Definitely how the sets from the early 90's i mentioned came about. I heard tell of a poker room brush who snagged bags of chips and you could only get them by telling the valet parking guy what you wanted and giving him cash. 30mins later he would come back and give you your chips.

Also heard of some transactions at river banks in the middle of the night.

My TRK Riverside set came from a massive hoard in the possession of a former owner/officer of the Riverside. I presume that when the casino changed hands and replaced its chip rack, this guy just snagged as many of the old chips as possible.

I think the Chiproom's biggest sales were when the economy was doing poorer. More small casinos closing down. The economy has improved a bit and there has definitely been a slowdown in Chiproom sales. Jim used to sometimes have multiple new casinos at once, and had enough chips to offer a sale basically every holiday.

What is the story with the Riviera? ....... did any of those chips survive this year? If only I knew they were closing shortly after I was in Vegas, I would have spent a fortune buying racks of them (instead of a couple for my display case)

Unless stolen beforehand, no Nevada casino chips/checks survive when a closing occurs. Destroyed by law. Heartbreaking....

i'm kind of embarrassed to have never thought of this explanation.

Ugh....... I always thought they had classy $1 chips too. And they had the 50 cent hot stamps. Could have made a nice low stakes cash set for cheap buying the chips at face value :(

Yeah stupid regulation 12.

I want to get two racks of plaza or flamingo $1s when i go back to vegas for relabeling.

In the last three years or so there have been at least four sales of big lots from The Chip Room. I purchased 1000+ chips twice and opted not to purchase the other two times. So, not sure if OP is new or missed those but seems like there is a sale like this every year.

New for sure. So the chip room guy must have some contacts then

an enterprising new UK member seems to have gotten his hands on a lot of new sets. i guess we could take a lesson from him.

The Chipocalypse has already occurred. You were born in the time of Naught, a scavenger in a vast wasteland. Those who guard their hoards or know of the existence of others speak not of such news. Sadly, this is the way of all things. Safe travels on your journey, friend.
