Hello PCFers,

I am new to chipping as I stated in other posts. My style of chips is colorful yet serious looking casino chips. Preferably, a conversational piece to any level of poker player. That said, I saw Dios De Los Muertos chips from BRProPoker.com and liked the design and knew my wife and family would love the color and artwork. Since 80% of games would be with family I felt comfortable pursuing. It wasn't casino style, but it was definitely colorful and conversational.

However, the more and more I researched and saw PCF Pr0n I felt for sure I would end up with 2 sets at some point. DDLMs for family play and casino style chips for more serious action.. Possibly a 3rd set for tournament (Now I know how "it" happens, but that's for another post).

So I recently ordered sample DDLMs. Wife loves the design. I was still getting use to the weight and feel. I have been shuffling them all day. My wife started to make fun of me and tell anyone she talked to on the phone that all I did was play with my chips. I had to admit that was pretty funny.

Just as I convinced myself that DDLMs would be my first poker set purchase, my wife said... why do those chips (ceramics) sound different than the others (clay chips) that we played with. I explained in general what ceramics and clay chips were. Then she said "did you order them yet?" And I explained how this was a sample set so you can determine if you like them before you buy 1000 chips. Then she said... "I prefer the other chips, they are more professional looking". These other chips were a set I had for 1 day (another post) that were more of a serious casino style chip.

In my head I am like.. "what?" I was getting this set because I thought she would enjoy them more. And then in my head I was immediately calculating how much I was going to spend on DDLMs (already over my initial budget) and what a 2nd set would have cost me. BAM!... a new budget price point for one good set! LOL.

A pleasant result and another reason to get sample sets first!
I hate ceramics. IMO, they are just dice chips with pictures printed on them. I don’t like the feel, I don’t like the sound, and I don’t like the pictures. I prefer a more traditional looking and feeling casino chip. I like the look and feel of China clays compared to any ceramic I’ve handled. I bought Paulsons because I could afford them. If I ever do a custom set, it’s gonna be from CPC.
Your wife has good taste. You should listen to what she said.

There are exceptions: like the @Mr Tree Paymasters. You really don’t know what you may be missing….

The complete Paymaster story (and real racetrack table) is beyond epic, and shows just how amazing and inspired some chipsets can be. All new chippers should check out the Hall of Fame for more info on amazing sets like this!

No, not my cup of tea. I wanted to like them, and got samples of various sets including those that I saw on YouTube by Jon Hobby, but I just ended up hating them. I’ve looked at a LOT of samples, plus played in quite a few casinos. Ceramics just don’t cut it for me no matter what’s printed on them

I love hearing the positive and negative perspectives. Appreciate the candor and will reference as I go through my decision/sampling process. Thank you.

@1pocket did you order any 43mm samples? If not you should, or post a want ad for some. They feel and sound different than the standard sized chips. The DDLM set can be ordered as a custom 43mm set.

My gut wants Paulsons with custom labels that I want to personally design. However, I havent established a hosted game as of yet that would justify the expense or time to produce such a set. Any suggestions?

Gear does custom labels. You can buy the most affordable Paulson chips you can find and then relabel them. If you can have patience, wait until the Chip Room does another sale and pick up chips then. It may be a long while, but worth the wait. The worst thing to have in this hobby is impatience.

I recently discovered the chip room. Is it the best price on the web for paulsons? The website seems to be down at the moment, but I’m not used to buying online via PayPal like the links on this forum, is there an alternative method?

There's no such thing as "justification". :)

I had a good laugh this morning. I explained the whole Paulson/Casino Chip thing to the wife and how they get harvested, murdered, relabeled. Then told her that someone shared that they have spent $30k on chips over time.

With all seriousness and confusion she says .."wait, but he has his own casino right?" I am still cracking up.. lol.

He does sales a when he gets new chips once In a very great while. There will be a big lead up to it on the forum, as it IS the most affordable way to get actual Paulson casino chips. The stuff he has up now is left over from previous sales. As far as I know PayPal is the only way. The good news is you will have plenty of time to ask question, do some research, figure out how many chips you need/should/can buy, and work on your design. By the time a sale comes back around, which could be a long time, you will be ready.

I got in on the HSI sale last year. I hasn’t been on the forum all that long, so I was unprepared. I would have made a couple of different choices had I been a more seasoned forum member, but I did the best I could and got a nice set. You will get Paulsons eventually. Everybody here does. Any chips you buy before those will just be placeholders until you do. I realized that and just went right for the good stuff.

I might not relabel them if I can get a nice looking chip to start with.

Can you share what you would have done differently? Perhaps you’ll help the newer folk avoid the same mistake(s)!

I didn’t order enough chips the first time around. I kept adding on, so I paid a lot in extra shipping. My initial plan was a 500 chip set. Then 700. I now have over 1,200. Then chips started to run out so I couldn’t get everything I really needed. I also should have bought the maximum fracs and snappers available so I could sell them later to other members for a ridiculous price to help pay for the set. I have a craps table, so I don’t use either of those types of chips, so I didn’t buy them. I would highly recommend buying more chips than you think you need. If you realize later you really have too many, you can always sell them on here and at the minimum get your money back, if not more. What you don’t want is to buy too few, and then have to buy more at a much higher price. Get full racks of everything you buy. I bought only 60 pieces of the $500 chips. Why? Because of the breakdowns on here they told me how many I needed of each chip. Well, I should have just bought 40 more for a whole rack.

I haven’t bought anything yet, but my plan is to get a cash set - either a defunct casino’s paulsons or custom CPCs. I’m really on the fence at the moment.

Was going to target:

120x $1
220x $5
100x $25
60x $100

Maybe now I’ll shoot for:

200x $1
300x $5
100x $25
100x $100
