This was a thread on ol' blue (not sure if I started it or not) but I think we need a new thread on here all about why you have a passion for playing with nice chips, collecting nice chips etc. What is it about these round discs that appeal so much to you.

For me it is the idea of being able to touch and play with something of greater value. Its a showpiece... an artwork. I always find myself wanting to be touching them and hearing them. Its a tactile and audio thing for me just as much as the beauty.

Chips appeal to me on many different levels...
  • Collecting - Baseball cards, Magic cards, games...and now chips. Easy to collect (albeit not exactly cheap).
  • Poker - Poker was the first game I ever learned to play. I was three years old sitting out on the porch with my folks when my uncle brought over a small steel table and, much to my grandmother's chagrin, started teaching me 5 card draw. I obviously wasn't any good at it, but I started learning the basics and fell in love with it immediately. I love tools and implements associated with poker...cards, chips, tables, casinos...good times.
  • Gaming - I love gaming in general, not just gambling. Tabletop games, role playing games, video games, card games, sports, etc...love them all. Poker and chips are part of gaming, so an interest in chips absolutely intersects.
  • Vegas - I love Vegas. LOVE Vegas. If my first game of poker set the hook for poker, then my first trip to Vegas set the hook for Vegas and chips in general. I'll go into more detail about that sometime later, and why Vegas World means a lot to me. For right now, suffice it to say that I love Vegas, and casino chips are the most tangible and relevant thing I can have from a town I love.
  • Quality parts - When playing sports, I always played better when we had game balls in play vs. practice balls, or new equipment vs. hand-me-downs. For the most part it was all psychological - the practice balls didn't perform all that differently from game balls, but playing with higher quality stuff resulted in me raising my game. Now, I don't necessarily play *better* when using "real" chips, but it does make me feel more confident, and I think it brings a certain joy to my players as well to be able to play with the real deal vs. plastic interlocking chips from the store. It just adds an element of class to the game and helps it feel more like a destination event with friends vs. an underground hobby.

^^^this. Pretty much sums it up for me except I don't collect cards, I also collect 1/18 scale Indycar models and N scale model trains.

Haha I am going to tag along on Psypher's post. Pretty much sums it up!

most of the above, haven't been to vagas yet, but hope to soon. I also find shuffling and just playing with them rhythmic and relaxing. seeing all the different designs and textures its like collecting art in miniature

We went over to a tennis player friend's house for dinner last week, and he had had a wine glass especially engraved for me, with "Easily distracted by shiny objects."

I guess that pretty well sums it up...

Im a collector of things, and a lover of poker. After living in Vegas and moving back east I played in a number of underground games with crappy dirty chips. I knew at that point that not only would i not play somewhere with dice chips, but I had to get some of my own sets. Since I played almost exclusively with Paulsons for those years i am now spoiled and wont settle.

I came to see if there was a thread along these lines after visiting the classifieds to see mostly just "wanted" adverts!

It would seem many of us are addicted to these little suckers!

I recall 5 years or so ago I decided to upgrade my dice set to some clays and went with Pharaoh's (China). Spent what I thought was too much on a 800pc set. Saw (for the first time) a range of Paulson's on Apache's site and fell for them but couldn't afford/justify the cost of ~$1.20 per chip at the time. Did a lot of reading on here and the blue wall site about all things chips and then my poker boom fizzled.

Today I'm back in the game (only as of a month or so ago) and already have a 90% complete Paulson set, the Pharaoh's have extended to 1000pc T set and 400pc cash set, I'm desperately trying to find more plaques and paying people around the world up to $2-3 per chip for PCR hotstamps! :S

I better hope I do well at the casino to pay for all this!

Guess it's better than a crack addiction.

Did a lot of reading on here and the blue wall site ...

Can we please get past this and act mature about it all? It's called Chiptalk.net, and a lot of members here are members there as well.

All this cryptic tiptoeing around is starting to get on my tits. I've asked the community over on Chiptalk to start calling "the other site" the Poker Chip Forum as well.

^ Haha I'm new here and noticed a couple of others said "the blue site" so thought I was just following the rules. Personally, I think the sites should merge or something!

it's not said with ill intent - at least by me. it's just a euphemism. like "gets on my tits".

I've used "the blue wall" as a nickname/inside joke here pretty frequently. It is a little unfriendly to newcomers though, more than I had realized after reading some posts here. I'll try to use "CT" more often here, but I'll stick to the euphemisms when I'm talking about PCF there.

I really thinks it's what they are made of, must have meth inside them. It started with me buying one chip off eBay. It was a luxor $1 1st issue chip, that single chip hooked me and led me to eventually find CT and once I saw the crazy collections I was addicted. Started slow just buying samples, and in comparison to a lot of members I'm still small time. I think it's a mix of owning something useful for my love of poker and something with history (ex casino chips etc.). And the fact we can actually have a custom sets made that would be difficult/impossible in some other hobbies.

Also I blame @courage a bit because he sent me a sample set of Cleo by ASM. That was my first time handling ASM chips.

That's not the same Luxor $1 you sent me, is it?

No, could never let that one go
