i am trying to decide where to begin.. currently own 2000 tiki's.. while they get the job done fine, i'd like a cash set of paulson's but have no idea what to look for.. what to pay.. they seem rather pricy. i like the empress and aurora star sets, and also some casino sets too, but i m just a little in over my head at this point.

Welcome! It is overwhelming and some of it is quite expensive. The rabbit hole goes pretty far down.

A great place to begin is to understand the stakes that you are playing at and the number of players you need to accommodate.
Blinds, buy ins, players.

For instance, maybe 25c/50c with up to 2 tables of 10 with average $50 buy in? Or $1/$2 for a single table of 10 with average of $300 buy in?
Maybe you don't need cash $100, $500, $1000. Or maybe you do.

Once you figure out the denoms you want and roughly how many, you can set a budget. Paulsons have a huge range in price. Get samples of RHC, THC, leaded THC, shaped inlays, etc.

Do you want a single, complete set, or a mixed casino set? Do you like the hat and cane mold, or did you want something else?

There are lots of choices. Best place to start is to define your game, and go from there.

Know (or learn) what you need to buy. Lots of people think they need 1000 or more chips, but most of the time a few hundred will do. Figuring this part out will let you budget efficiently.

If you have your heart set on AS or ES 1000 chips, save at least 5-6 thousand dollars. IF you can find a seller. Don't want to burst your bubble, but the market is the market.

I understand i will need pay to play, lol.. I am more or less looking to start with a 500 cash set, THC. a set that i can easily add on to later. i want all matching chips, so not a mixed set. how do you determine the value of a given set, or know a round about number to be shooting for. say i were looking for 500 empress stars how much should i expect to spend? THanks for your reply!

The ES would be hard to add onto later since your only source is members who are willing to sell. But a great way to get an idea of the cost is to search the classifieds for prior sales.

Right? I think the biggest set I've owned was an 800 chip cash set. And it felt diminutive and inadequate, compared to so many of the sets I see here. And honestly, I've never gotten more than 400 chips on the felt.
So yeah, @cheque_raise starting at 500 for a cash set is probably a great idea. I have no idea what you should be paying for empress star chips - they seem overpriced to me and I don't understand that market. Heads up though, The Chip Room just bought out another casino - sample sets are gone, but the actual sale will probably go live in about 3 weeks - great place to start if you want to dip your toes into Paulsons, and they'll be a lot cheaper than those Stars. https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/horseshoe-southern-indiana-sample-set-sale.60829/

could you perhaps recommend a few nice sets that are easy to find that are on the cheaper end of the paulson spectrum. $3500 for 500 empress stars is probably not where i should start

Several used RHC casino chip sets are very reasonably priced, and will likely become avaiable for sale in the next few weeks as people start unloading sets in preparation for the latest TCR sale -- Par-A-Dice Casino, Casino Aztar Indiana, Roadhouse, Horseshoe Cincinnat and Cleveland casinos (primary chips), etc. Most will be priced around $1.00-$1.50 per chip across three denominations ($1, $5, $5).

Or you could just wait for the upcoming sale and buy those - the casino used chips in the upcoming Chip Room sale are very likely to be cheaper than just about everything that people will try to sell off beforehand. He said he'll post the prices in about 10 days.
