Tourney What is the most standard T25 base setup (1 Viewer)

Any other parameters? What is the total starting stack? How many rebuys do you expect? Is there add-ons?

8 x T25
8 x T100
8 x 500
8 x T1K
6 x 1K

This is a basic breakdown for a T10K and is the base of what you played with on Saturday. Only difference is the S@P was a T25K and had 3 T5K’s added.

My preferred breakdown is:
12 x T25
12 x T100
5 x T500
6 x T1K

Lots of options

If I understood the question correctly, I would guess that it's pretty standard to run T10K tournaments with a T25 base. People seem to like starting stacks of 12/12/3/7 since the number of low denoms is neither too few nor too many, and there's really no need for more T500. Multiply by ten and you have the chips needed for starting stacks. Add enough T5000 to cover color-ups and rebuys. 6 are needed to color up T25 through T500, more is for rebuys and versatility (to be able to run T15K or T20K etc)

But I have no idea what the most "standard" is.

Behold, the world's best 600 chip tourney breakdown for 20 players, T10,000 stacks with rebuys:

160 x T25
160 x T100
80 x T500
140 x T1000
60 x T5000 (or 50 x T5000 and 10 x T25K)

TOTAL BANK: T500,000 (with no T25K)

600 chips. Starting stacks of 8/8/4/7. Do a search on PCF or the blue site for "BCC GCR" and "Goph" and you'll see a couple breakdown threads on the ideal T10K breakdown. My breakdown above is super flexible for all tourneys up to 20 players, and allows you to have T10K starting stacks, which I think is the most popular starting stack size. You'll also have more than enough chips for color-ups and rebuys/add-ons.

Supports up to 20, with 10 players you can use a larger chip stack with 12/12/7/5 or 12/12/5/6.

I, on the other hand, like T10Ks starting with 20/20/15, because, you know, MOAR chips!
If your crowd can't handle tall stacks it might be hassle, though. But there's only one way they'll learn, just saying ;)

I went with the universal, and BG approved 600 chip set.

T 25 - 160
T 100 - 160
T 500 - 80
T 1k - 140
T 5k - 60

With 5 extras each. Perfect for 1 (12/12/5/7) or 2 (8/8/4/7) table 10k starting stacks.

Correct - that 600 chip set supports one table up to T35K stacks (12/12/5/6/5), while also supporting 20 players with 20K stacks (8/8/4/7/2) or 10K stacks with re-buys.

I prefer this breakdown as a minimum for a single table set (10 players):

120 x T25
120 x T100
50 x T500
75 x T1000 (15x for T25/T100 color-ups)
35 x T5000 (5x used for T500 color-ups, balance for re-buys and/or stacks larger than T10K)
-------------
400 chips

Supports up to T15k starting stacks (12/12/5/6/1) with ample chips for color-ups and 10 re-buys, or larger T25k starting stacks with no re-buys. Typically 80-110 total chips in play at tournament end, pending structure.

Never hurts to get extras, in case of loss, theft, breakage, or future expansion. :) Public service announcement and unpaid endorsement to buy moar chipes.

Thanks, @BSteck -- ^those^ two would be my 'standard' 600-chip and 400-chip tournament set recommendations for 10-player 10K events (the former with capability for handling two tables). For a 'standard' 20-player 20K set, I recommend 800 chips (240/240/100/160/60).

However, most of my personal sets are geared towards supporting at least two 8-player tables with up to 200K starting stacks:

200 x T25
200 x T100
100 x T500
200 x T1000
200 x T5000
100 x T25000
--------------
1000 chips

Thanks for all the replies guys. It seems to be a preference thing as shown in the comments above, I was hoping there was a standard/best approach for T25/10k starting stacks that won't break the bank chip wise. After yesterday I want to get into more tournament hosting, just need to get the chips figured out.

approach for T25/10k starting stacks that won't break the bank chip wise.
Best budget approach for a T25-base 10-player 10K tournament set with color-up chips and up to three re-buys (33%) is 280 total chips (8/8/4/7 stacks):

80 x T25
80 x T100
40 x T500
70 x T1000
10 x T5000
------------
280 chips

But the 400-chip set option is much better.

It’s not standard... but since I have a lot of 100/500/1000 chips (n.b.: undenominated) I start at 15/15/15 (which is actually 24K), plus a single 5,000 chip if you’re in your seat on time. So, technically a T29000, since by now almost everyone makes a point of arriving on-time.

The 15/15/15 starting stacks maks it really quick for me to count out chips to set up. I pull out barrels, subtract 5 from each (which has become like second nature) and then stack the spare 5s every time I get a multiple of 3 of them, if that makes sense.

I also find the tourney plays better early when people have more chips—in terms of the number of chips, not the total value. They seem to make more calibrated and thoughtful bet sizes when they start with larger stacks and don't have to constantly make change. When there are fewer chips, people seem to always round up, resulting in bloated pots early on. Not ideal when the tourney is meant to give players a couple hours entertainment at minimum.

I color up the 100s at the first break, and the 500s at the second, so the number of chips in front of the final 6-8 players doesn’t get out of control late. (This is a small two-table tourney.)

The 400 chip option should work perfect for my needs and budget, but this is another good piece of info to have.

I vote @BGinGA writes the master sticky guide on tourney structures/setups
I'll write the master sticky guide, so long as you purchase all of the chips needed for the various breakdowns in the photo shoot, and then photograph them for inclusion.

One good volunteer effort deserves another. :)

Can I just take pictures of your chips since you have them already? My wife has a camera and light box, send a few sets over and I'll photograph those bad boys for you ;)

1000 chips

I have got myself a set of 600 chips following your breakdown.
May I ask when/how you colour up? I assume after the 5th and 10th round of blind level taking the T25 chips out on the 5th level and the T100 chips out on the 10th?

Depends on the actual structure, but chips are typically removed from play after they are no longer needed. Either the round-up or race-off methods can be used, and I advise using replacement chips that will not be later removed from play (i.e., using T1000 chips to color-up T25s and T100s, and using T5000 chips to color-up T500s).

My preferred breakdown is:
12 x T25
12 x T100
5 x T500
6 x T1K

I like this alot better that the basic you posted. For me, you need at least 10 of the smallest chip in play (no matter what the stakes) so you're not constantly making change... Obviously, if T25 is your smallest chip, you need 12x to start.

I'm trimming down the fat on a tournament set I bought and would like to make sure I'm making the right cuts.

Is 120/120/50/75/35 >>>> 120/120/60/80/20 ?

Right now I'm sitting on
140 x T25
140 x T100
60 x T500
80 x T1k
40 x T5k
20 x T25k

Deciding on which 400 chip structure to go with, and if theres any benefit to keeping the extras. It sounds like I should immediately cut those T25k, as they'll never see play. Would the additional 60 chips be useful for play or would they also probably never see the felt?

Looks like extras would be
(
20 x T25
20 x T100
)
and either...
(
10 x T500
5 x T1k
5 x T5k
) or
(
20 x T5k
)

Thanks

The first one is the bare minimum of T25/100/500/1000 for 10 stacks of 12/12/5/6 plus enough extra T1000 to color up the T25 and T100.

The second one is just rounded in barrels (quantities of 20) which gives a few extra T500, T1000.

Yeah for base T25 unless you are talking about 3 tables or more the T25K are unlikely to see play.

So if you really are trying to be a minimalist, the first one is probably better.

Now since this is PCF, I am bound to suggest a moar chips option.

+20 T25, +20 T100, +20 T500 +80 T1000 +10 T5000 gives you a 650 chip set that enables you to cover 20 stacks of 8/8/4/7.

Personally, unless the chips you are potentially selling are pretty valuable. I would just keep it as it is. It's a good idea to keep some spares.

T10k starting stack is our monthly game and I have a number of sets that will cover this game. Since we're usually less than 10 people (6-8 max) I usually try to spread 12/17/4/6. If I don't have enough chips or we have more than 8 people then 12/12/5/6.

My latest set will allow me to do 16/16/4/6 for 10 - the main reason is because the T25s are a lovely colour so want to have plenty of them on the table :)

I once tried 20/20/5/5 but it was a bit unwieldy, especially when it came to colour-up.

Going forward I'm big time copying @BGinGA and getting 200/200/100/200/200/100 sets so that I can do whatever I feel like!

Ok guys looking at hosting a tourney sunday with a 10k stack 10 players. I am thinking of 3-4 hours max closer to 3 hours since its only going to be a $20-$25 buy in with cash game after. @BGinGA what blind timer do I need to use to make that happen? How do you guys figure out the time. Thanks for any help
