There was a thread where people were discussing cash chip sets vs tourney sets, and most people had 2-3X cash sets vs tourney sets. Cash sets seemed the most popular by a large margin.

I was curious when you organize a poker night, what type of game do you normally end up playing?

We once played a tournament every session, sometimes several. These days I rarely organize more than two a year, all due to the players' preferences.

I host both. Cash game from 6-8pm, tourney at 8, cash when first table breaks. I prefer to play cash.

Typically tourney first 7-10:30, then cash starts when 4-5 players have busted. We usually split up the table in half and have both games running on the same table. When I see the cash is juicy, it affects my tourney strategy.

Thanks @mummel I was going to create this same poll as I had the same curiosity.

I think I would lean towards cash game as well simply so I can put my cash set in play.

We always play cash; we sometimes throw in a turbo tourney.

I definitely prefer cash. People can come and go when they please, and they can always reload if they bust out.

If you just have a tourney, it inherently means that than half the people get to play less than than half the night.

Seems like most people are for cash games because of the issue of people busting out early. Agreed.

But what about offering rebuys during the first part of the tourney?

That helps, but doesn't remove the problem. Our games are as much, if not more, about friends getting together - cash games work better in that respect (for our group).

I offer unlimited rebuy for the first 6 rounds. The same guys typically take advantage of this. Some of the better players don't really like it,so I am mixing it up this year. This month is our first freeze out. I'm curious to see how it goes.

I actually enjoy tournaments more than cash.

For my monthly league I allow one rebuy for the first four blind levels (1 hour 40 minutes). It allows people to suffer an early cooler and still enjoy a night of poker.

There are a lot of reasons why some folks prefer cash games: players can start and leave at different times and take breaks as needed/required, players can rebuy as often as they want or need to, and cash games are easier to set up for and don't require a method of tracking blinds. Cash games are more flexible in so many ways.

This might be unusual, but I find tournaments to be stressful and cash games to be more relaxed and much more enjoyable.

As far as the set configuration, all of my (high end) sets are NCV. Some better for certain tourneys, but can also be used for cash, and visa versa

Rebuys reduce the problem, but don't solve it.

A tournament is a "last man standing" format. Having a point where very few people are left is inevitable, because it's the whole point of a tournament! Some love it, some hate it.... And the rest of us are in between.

For those that run tournaments, I think I've seen 4 approaches to try and avoid early exits for the guests:

1) host the cash game first, then end the night with a tournament
2) host the tournament first, then start a 2nd table for the cash game for those that bust out
3) allow X number of rebuys/add ons during the tournament to keep your players in the tournament longer
4) play multiple tournaments in a night

But I agree, running a tournament is more challenging and more stressful (blind schedules, etc...). I also agree that you get more of a relaxed atmosphere with the cash game, along with less logistical issues.

I find tourneys are good for getting new players. But once they get acclimated they are all about that cash.

There are 3 things I'm not that into in poker:
Holdem
Tourneys
Playing short stacked

So a Holdem tourney is the worst of all worlds for me.

Tournament all the way....

Dont bust out early!! If you do. sign up for another one. play cash for an hour till the next tournament starts.

Home games we usually play 5K starting stack with 8 minute blinds. Usually takes about an hour maybe hour and half.
After 2 of those we start the 10k stack with 13 minute blinds with unlimited re-buys that takes about 3 hours. ish,

The unlimited re-buy gets a little sloppy. I've seen the blinds at 2k/4k and people re-buy and bust out in 1 hand.
I think we are going to end that but its tough to say no when its a small group maybe 6 or 7 and they want to get back in.

My preference is really based on the fact that i want to play cards for the evening.
I would not and never will, profess to making money at playing cards. But i really enjoy playing poker.
Tournament lets me sit and play cards for 5, 6, 8 hours and know what i'm losing in $. with a decent chance to finish in the money.

An appropriately sized cash game with the same people would probably be lower variance for you. And the rebuys last longer than 1 hand.

8 minute blinds? How many orbits do you get in normally? 3/4s?

last longer than 1 hand..?. You didn't see me at the BBotB.

But i agree. Lower variance with right sized cash game. I am ok with that.

Its really just a quick game. $10 buy in for the 8 minute blinds. not sure how many orbits. 5 players or less winner takes all.

Usually gets chopped soon as its down to 2 so we can start another.
