What else do you collect? (1 Viewer)

I've been more or less out of the arcade collecting hobby for the last 6 years, even though I've bought 5 in the last year . This video (a local news story about my collection) was almost 10 years ago before our addition, which included a basement extension that added 30 B&W games from the 1970's. I spent about 8 hours a day in this hobby from 1998 to 2008. It was both a time and money soak, far beyond chipping. Similar to restoring old cars, the first one is exciting but then it ended up feeling like a job so I bowed out of the insanity.

On Amazon Prime (and probably some others now) there is a documentary called The Space Invaders. I'm the guy in the orange shirt. The producer flew to my house in NH from CA and spent 3 days out here. We did my interview at 2am after I picked him up from the airport. I had a 102 fever and was out of my mind but I think it pulled together okay. This was a great hobby to be in, everyone was (is) friendly by nature due to the games being friendly by nature. The only tough era was around 2001-2002 when games and game parts were being sold at phenomenally high prices which attracted some of the scumbags looking to make a quick buck only.

Insane! What was your power bill like?!

Insane! What was your power bill like?!

Believe it or not the power is minimum. At the time I calculated it was $.25 for one game if left on for 8 hours. When you have a collection of games like this, you never just leave them on like an arcade did in the 80's. You turn them on, play some then turn them off.

One collection I do have that has true value is Cookbooks, over 300

Hmmm -- I never thought of them as a collection, but we have a few hundred too (we both cook).

Is the "true value" you speak of monetary, or the value of gustatory delight?

Great thread!

I like to collect things... Mostly stuff you can use, but often times I will collect stuff for aesthetic reasons. I have a good number of mini collections, but nothing too over the top (with the exception of poker chips). Here's a list of a few of collections:

4- Legos.. (We had a Lego room, but outgrew it... I think last count was around 40,000 pieces)

Our family is big into Legos, my son's latest pickup was the star wars death star, took like 3 weeks to assemble. I'd love to see some pics of the Lego room if you have any :)

Neon. I love Neon. When I was a kid the theater in town had a clock down below the screen that glowed in a way that was fascinating to me. I remember staring at it during movies. I didn't really know what it was but I thought it was cool. When I got my first house I knew I wanted some neon signs. The Olympics had been hosted in my state years before and there were a couple of cool olympic signs that I searched for over several years. I found a listing for one of the signs I was looking for and bought it from a neon bender who I have become friends with. He has built 3 custom signs for me and has repaired a half dozen that arrived broken in the mail and 1 that was broken during a card game. Last year I happened upon the very Glo Dial clock that I had stared at as a boy in the theater and it now hangs in my kitchen. Total I have about 40 signs.
Want to buy a corona neon sign??

Both!! I have several vintage cookbooks and signed copies that are or could be valuable.

My rarest book probably is Food and Finesse: The Brides Bible 1948 signed by Chef Henri Charpentier

There were only like 1,000 copies of the Brides Bible printed. That's a pretty rare find!

Very cool, what kind of board games?

I have these ones:

Monopoly
Risk
Clue
Video Village
Concentration
Camouflage
Why?
Mousetrap
Coleco Football
Philip Marlowe Detective game
Lie Detector
mechanical hockey game

When I was a kid, I had a 'Challenge the Yankees' baseball game. I guess my mom must have thrown it out, since it never showed up when I looked for it many years ago. I wish I had this, since it would be worth several hundred dollars now. Individual cards can go for lots of money depending on their condition. Don't confuse this with 'NY Yankees Baseball Challenge Game' from the '80s. The original game came out around 1964 and had a picture of the original Yankee Stadium on the cover.

At least I saved the mechanical hockey game, as that was about to be thrown out.

Dang!

We love board games but we don't have near that many....I think 20 to 30 board and card games. That and my wife loves her Playstation. She's picky about her PS games though...no collecting there.

I'll play.

I love to build AR-15s. We only have 4 in our home...2 are mine and 1 for each of the ladies.

I have built around 14 and have 2 more to build for a buddy. I don't sell them but if I know you, aren't nuts and I think you're responsible...if you buy the parts and legally buy and register your lower receiver...I'll help you build it with my tools.

I also seem to collect ice fishing jigs.

Started out as a coin collector. Still have a lot but sold some to fund a few chip purchases.

I didn't buy out any game stores, but when @Psypher1000 built his Armory chip set, It reminded me of the game store that I used to frequent every payday, called "The Armory". As it turns out, there is an actual connection. Small world.

Many of the games were acquired when Mrs Zombie and I worked for a game company. At conventions, we would barter copies of our games for copies of other companies' games, thus amassing a gigantic library of games, floor to ceiling, on bookcases that extend out from the walls (like an actual library).

When we purchased our first custom chips, we didn't know anyone that played poker. We figured the chips would at the very least, be filed with our collection of miscellaneous gaming components. What a rabbit-hole that turned out to be...

Cards . . . duh.
Darts, as I play in a League

Straight razors. I use them, but not as often as when I first got the "bug". I have a couple very old ones that I have had restored (over two hundred years old). There is something about shaving well with a naked edge that makes you feel great. And the quality of shave is second to none. The craftsmanship is also a draw. My prized razors were not ground down from billets, but were hammered into shape by hand, forged by a single craftsman, and sharpened for a Customer who might have paid up to a week's wages for one of these functional pieces of art.

I used to have a half dozen book cases full of paperbacks, but they got sold off after getting married, along with my comics collection.

Oh, and I played Diplomacy for several years, along with a few RPGs as well

I too am a straight-razor user. I don't use it as much anymore because I am less than 100% at 4-something in the morning, when I need to get ready for work, but I do like it very much. I've only owned 2 though, so it's not really a collection - just a companion of sorts to the knife and sword collection.

How much did you pay?

Are you looking for help with a value for your sign? I paid $310 for a sign I have been wanting for about 5 years. The sign was well packed, double boxed, and shipped FedEx ground. I got an excellent deal. Neon signs are difficult to ship. Most of mine that were shipped have arrived broken.

My collecting started with baseball cards then to comic books. Missed out on walking dead comics dam it!! I bought Image too, upsetting. Then the video game phase...PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, and Dreamcast etc. Lately, cigar boxes, gshock watches and now dealer buttons.

I'm also a big board game player/collector.

Hey! It's great to see you around again. Your Villagio hot stamps are one of my favorite sets. Great color combos and holographic foil. How about some pron one of these days?

Aside from the chip addiction I also collect sports memorabilia, autos and cards. I mainly focus on Leafs and Blue Jays stuff.

Watches (nothing really that high-end, but I love mechanical devices, and watches fill that itch)

Dang, forgot to add watches to my list... Ya, I like a nice watch. Nothing crazy high end, but a decent mix of nice watches (Movado, Tag, Citizen-Eco's, Ti Swiss Military, etc...). Most of which I've obtained through bargain hunting.

Our family is big into Legos, my son's latest pickup was the star wars death star, took like 3 weeks to assemble. I'd love to see some pics of the Lego room if you have any :)

We got the Death Star a few years ago. Took my son a day. He's crazy gifted with Legos. He can see a picture of a bug, a car, or anything, and then recreate it in Legos so that you'd easily recognize it as the original. We also utilize Legos when getting him through his math homework. He'll be stuck on a problem, and if we use Legos, his brain works like a calculator. A while back, he was having a hard time with a multiplication problem (something like 14x18). He was saying "Dad, I CAN'T do it..." (he's now 9 btw). I'd say, "If you have a lego square with 14 studs on one side, and 18 on the other, how many total studs are there?". He replied, "Dad that's easy, there's 252 studs, but this math stuff is HARD..."
