this is about trying to gauge how strong a villain is. I can get players to talk and there must be lots of info coming back but i often have trouble working out what it is.

There is one i have found mostly reliable IF the villain doesn't know about it. sorry if you use this one the cat is out of the bag.

so mine basically tells you about strength. you ask just after the villian bets you ask "would you show me if i fold?"

If they say NO! this is a sign of strength - they want you to pay for the hand. If its a yes this is mostly weak - a moderate to weak hand. ( altho i was shown a straight flush once by a guy with no idea he had the nuts so that doesn't really count} the best hand i saw where i did fold was top pair Queens with 4 kicker.

So my question is how do you work out what inside someones head at the table.

So what do you guys use at the table and what does it mean?

I actually prefer a twist on the one you use. I say:

If I show, will you fold?

This catches them off guard because they're used to the question you ask. Thus it generally illicits a reliable response from them. If they give a genuine laugh and smile, that means they're comfortable with the hand and situation. If their laugh or smile are forced and not genuine, they're less comfortable.

Using the one you say, if they say "yes" they will show when you fold, you can follow up with "so you want me to fold!" (use the voice of Vizzini from The Princess Bride for maximum results) and again it should get a genuine or forced response, which you then gauge for strength.

In Casinos I almost never speak, unless i'm ordering a drink

In home games, I usually dont shutup, but its typically not related to the game whatsoever, usually small talk, current events and sports

I'm not usually one looking for an angle or playing mind games with other players, and I never answer a question when a player asks me during the middle of a hand

I'm with this guy.

I am always talking at a table. Casino or not. I make friends. Suckers will just give their money away. If one guy wants to be all serious, I get everyone else at the table having a good time and talking, making him look like a dickhead. Then he loosens up.

As far as what to say and when... well it depends on the person.

Read the writings of Amarillo Slim.

You gotta wine and dine the suckers.

You wouldn't happen to be Curtis Rystadt, would you?
