So some of you might have seen the sale thread for Kings cards from Australia.
I have an opportunity for a group buy of 1000 custom decks.
500/500 with 2 different colour backs.

the cards will be Bridge size only.
The front will be jumbo index as shown.

i wouldn't mind doing something with large suit for each of the aces.

you will probably notice that they look similar to the angel playing cards.

i am yet to design a back for these cards or the jokers.

any input would be great.

Lastly, what would people expect to pay for a single deck if custom designed cards?

Sorry buddy - the first thing I look for is poker size. They work better in the ShuffleTech

I would personally like 4-color pips, easier to tell the difference and brighter. I also like purple/orange or purple/green backs for the cards, good contrast between them. Also, the center pips on the aces are really wide, I would consider changing that.

Forget about pleasing everybody. Even if you have amazing artwork front and back, you're not going to please even half of the people - too many variables.
Assuming you have good stock and the bridge jumbo i prefer, I like my face cards fairly traditional and clean professional looking backs, in colors that aren't blue and red.
And anything more than $15 per setup and I'm going to be comparing them to the other manufacturers, making it a tough sell.
Good luck with it

You may get “enthusiast” type answers here from many people who have a lot of cards already and are looking for something different....meaning things you will have a hard time unloading.

I only use bridge sized and that has been the standard in US poker rooms since the 1970’s. I personally much prefer them as well. I would recommend a very simple “casino” like back or something similar to Kem Arrows or the Desjgn cards. Something classic that appeals to almost anyone.

I used to hate jumbo but see the practicality for people sitting at the end of the table and older folks. Desjgn has a “blackjack size” which is somewhere in between and may be a cool option.

As the owner of almost every card made I prefer the feel of Kem followed by Desjgn’s earlier cards and then Catamundi Acetate.

What ever you decide I think novelty stuff like 4 color, odd pips, etc will be tough to get rid of to people outside some you may find on a forum like this.

+1 for the cream centre actually. It's a good look.

Though I do like the angel style that you've mocked

I prefer Euro style creme colored centers, blackjack index, non full bleed card backs, and clearly discernible colors for the backs. Colors not that important. None of these are deal breakers though if the cards don’t feature some of these.

Some good feedback.

Part of my reason for custom fronts was a plain white front with no yellow box. I really like the angel design in that regard.

Anyone who someone who is able to design a back?

Green/brown color deficiency is real. I never understood the rationale behind green/brown deck backs.

Why not a dark color and a light color?

I like whole red/blue, green/brown custom. Maybe change brown to purple and you are good to go.
I agree with this. Brown is not my preference. Would much prefer green matched with purple or orange personally over brown.

I do like the first design @xdan mocked up!

As far as the original question, I think going the generic route would sell the best. Yeah, it would be cool to have PCF decks, or tribute decks for PNY, PCA, or other favorites on here, but I said this in the other card GB threads too, it alienates a lot of your potential buyer base if you go with something too specific.

Generic, casino-like backs if designed well have the most appeal and would sell the best, here and elsewhere.

I know that not everyone can be pleased, but I do like some texture on the card backs and a smooth card face. I think the King stock knocks it out of the park in this regard. The matte card faces are the best out there. They're so smooth and feel so nice.

Bridge, jumbo index is the way to go here. Kudos to you so far @xdan . I'm still skeptical we'll meet the 500/500 sales point here, but maybe if you or Rob found a North American based distributor to take half and you kept the other half in Australia to sell the remainder of what PCF does not buy, I think this could work.

Also, to elaborate on the Blackjack sized pip preference, is it allows more room for the artwork but is still big enough for the seeing impaired. The biggest complain I used to get was that the jumbo pips forced you to pull them up too high to check your hole cards. While that used to annoy me as well, losing the space for the artwork bothers me more. I noticed this most when you have beautiful designs like Desjgn.

Another nice touch that you rarely see is flesh colored faces like this

I want to make sure I'm understanding things correctly. The other thread on the Kings cards is just a group buy of standard Kings cards to get them from Australia to the US/Canada, and THIS thread is for CUSTOMIZED Kings cards, right? For me, I'd rather pay less for the standard Kings cards. I will be following here with interest though, hoping you guys come up with something cool.

Ha, great to hear this. I thought I was the only one that had an issue with this!

I like card back designs with a white border on the edge. I also don't prefer brown/green combo as I have a green felt and like the cards to stand out a bit more.

+1 Bridge
+1 Jumbo index

Correct.
However, I think the customs will actually work out cheaper..

I’ll mock up some different colours tonight.

Dal negro have a wide choice of colours. I really like their NTP sets with the yellow backs.

Red and blue seems like a safe choice.

Green and burgundy?

Yellow and light blue?
