What are your taboos when creating chip sets? (1 Viewer)

So for example I can see it's ok amongst chippers to mix different casino chips into one cohesive set, but would you ever mix Paulson clays or TRKs with Bud Jones ceramics for example?

Are there any design lines (other than obvious counterfeiting of course) you just wouldn't cross?

That's both making custom sets and creating sets from existing chips.

Also, mixing different molds within a set is not something I'm a fan of personally. Although even there I'd make exceptions in certain cases (PCA Secondary lineup comes to mind).

Agreed.
Another example for an exception to the rule:
I haven't done it myself but I think RHC for lower and IHC for higher denoms seems like a pretty natural progression looks wise.

When you’re talking about a mixed set, I wouldn’t like to see some chips with black (or dark) background inlays mixed with some chips with white (or light) background inlays.
On a similar note, the vast majority of white-background chips have either black denominations or red denominations. I’d prefer all the chips in a set to have one or the other. Though this is an easier one to overlook.

Yeah, I'd say mixing house molds would be another exception to the 'no-mixing' rule, for sure.

I can tolerate most things besides differing stack heights. Different molds is probably a close second.

Just like to say I appreciate the comments. I’ve been thinking about putting together a set of starbursts which would likely come from many different sources, good to see that this can be acceptable in this poker chip community. I’m learning a ton.

With that said, personally if the chips are brand new I’d want them all to match. But if I were to create a set from used chips, I’d want them to be all the same material, same center (inlay vs hot stamp), same size and color (per denom). I suppose if all those are consistent, I wouldn’t mind if the condition varies, nor if the mold was different.

Responding specifically to the OP, I would never mix different materials and manufacturers together.

I suppose a small exception could be made for TRK SCrown or LCrown with a CPC of the same mold, but the latter only for designs/denoms that did not exist or was obviously a replica. Not encouraging fraud here.

Next "never mix" is molds. You can kinda get away with THC/RHC, I mean casinos do it. But RHCs and house molds is just bad.

Boulder Station would make your head explode, the reds they have in use are a mix of THC, RHC, Chipco, and Bud Jones V7, all just mixed together and in trays/on tables.

Seriously, the Sahara dunes set has me on tilt. I have literally tried 4 different chips for fracs, and I’m choosing the worst condition out of the bunch, nothing but semi tires makes sense for those chips.

Gotta be worse condition, the lower the denom, and work it’s way up to decent condition 25s/100 can’t be haphazard about this, can’t have Minty fracs and beat up ones.

That doesnt help, lol, I don't like them at all. As much as I love Chipdust and Cactus Pete's. The latter two I would seriously rate as 9/10 or even 10/10, but the scarlet room's are like a 2/10 for me.

"I" won't mix ceramics and clays. I have played with guys that do. It isn't the end of the world. If I have to mix CPC's/Paulsons/TRK's it is usually because I don't have a frac or a rebuy chip with the set.

Otherwise, have fun and do what you want.
