Hello PCF world.

Finding this forum has been the greatest/worst thing in my life. I become obsessed, take a break for a little, become more obsessed, rinse and repeat.

I’m currently working on a new set that I have been thinking about for quite some time. I’m open to any/all feedback, but my mind is pretty set on the overall 1980’s retro vibe, with Cali colors and a beach theme (to go with my last name “Whaley”).

My hopes are to make this set with CPC, and eventually have a professional sharpen up my art a bit more (this inlay is a VERY rough draft). This set will likely be a ways down the road (my wife says their are more important things than “stupid poker chips”...I disagree!)

But for now, I would love your two cents, while I continue dreaming of my perfect poker set, in my perfect poker room, playing on my perfect custom Chan Man table!

Thanks in advance!
(*I also want to keep the spot pattern at/near level 4 or lower*)

Love the theme and inlay!

A couple quick notes:
-Get color samples. Dayglo Saturn is a weird color.
-Your yellow quarter will have dirty stack issues with your yellow five. Try a red/pink or pink/lavender half pie instead.

It’s going to be a cool set!

A little more interesting $20 spot pattern-wise and still a level 4.

I think it is a great starting spot. The only thought I would offer up is increase the size of the whale's tail and offset it to one side or the other. Then resize your denomination and place it on the opposite side of the tail. Otherwise I think you are off to a great start.

Both spots are DG saturn. It as a spot can work, but it also can come off very plastic-ish. Rainmans use as a base was a perfect example of "holy shit no"

It's such a good color on the design tool, but it just doesn't work in use very well. View attachment 630506
Use of DG Saturn aside, I'd worry about dirty stacks/pots with DG Yellow used as a base color on the quarter, as a spot color on the dollar, and as a potential spot color on the $5. Lots of yellow, pink, blue, and white being used in particular that will give lots of these problems as you move up the set. I would perhaps consider using a little more red on the quarter if you're going for a Cali colored theme. Would you consider a quarter pie quarter?

Just something quick I mocked up. Not thrilled with it myself but it fixes some of the dirty stack issues.

Peach would work, or the weighted yellow I think would be fine. Agreed saturn would make some dirty stacks with the frac

Okay, I appreciate the feedback! I tweaked a bit.. I would need to see something that convinces me to not do that $20, cause I like the quirkyness of the edge spots. V.2 has a few slight edge spot changes. (Not 100% sold on frac, but would love to hear thoughts).

Edit* I wanted to include a close up picture so you could see what changed on the inlay more clearly.

If you aren’t working with a designer yet for your inlay, DO IT!! You have a great concept and start to an inlay. But you will be amazed at what a designer can do for you. The best thing you can do for your set, bar none.

Nice concept here, but get colour sample chips from CPC first. Even dayglo yellow is not how it looks in the design tool (it’s more greenish). Cheers

As always, any feedback is appreciated! Gonna reach out to J5 sooner than later, I just need to see what a professional can do with a decent concept, I have seen others and it’s unbelievable. How about your thoughts on this frac, as far as base and edge spots?

Quarter pie. Bouncing from 3 spots to 1 then 2 then 3 is odd to me if you’re going to have some progression.

PS V2 > V1

Welp, I sent my mock up off to J5, and hopefully he can give some feedback...here’s what I sent him. I know he can put that extra flair on it, but based on my very limited art skills, I’m happy with where I got it to! Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Good start! Not a fan of the similar spot patterns though on the 25c, $20 and $100... would look better if all chips followed that pattern or not at all.

J5 doesn’t disappoint! Looking forward to seeing what he comes up with for you.

It’s funny that you can think you’ve got your edge spots right where you want them, your base colors feel solid, then you change it up 75 more times!! In case anyone besides me cares, I wanted to add a 5c micro frac, and make the edge spot progressions begin at the $1 and continue to the $100. Rough draft going to J5 soon.

I think we can all relate - I mocked up some 40 different versions of my Hoser Hut set before settling on the final version. Heck, if it hadn't been for the submission deadline at CPC, I might have ended up with 40 more!

I like where your set is going, however having the same colours on consecutive denominations with the $1 and the $5 is something I would change, personally. I'd suggest deciding which denom you want to keep as is and then trying something else out with the remaining denom.

I did a little unsolicited play around with your set keeping your base colors but trying to get a bit more variation. Feel absolutely free to ignore, I use about any excuse to play with the design tool :D

There are some amazing color and spot patterns out there, from which you can draw inspiration. It’s easy to second guess and change. If you have time, let it sit, ans go back to it. It’s worth it to get it right.
