Hey, all. I'm new here. Didn't know this was a thing -- which seems silly in retrospect, because, obviously -- but I'm glad I found the site. Every single thing I like on here is easily 10x my price range, so it'll be a while still, but I'm excited about getting started.

I'm open to hear any beginner tips if you've got 'em. The most popular so far seems to be "get samples." How do you even do that?

Thanks,

Matt

Welcome, here's an oldie but a goodie:

Hopefully you are a winning player and can funnel some of that towards your new addiction. Otherwise, well you might want to find a crack dealer, it is cheaper and will make you forget about poker chips!

Welcome and enjoy all the pron until you get your own stuff to post.

Welcome man! You don't have to be a high roller to get into this hobby. There's plenty of routes to take. Just have fun, and don't take things too seriously.

If you want samples just ask. Chippers on here are very generous. When i first joined i got samples of what i was looking for for free

Luckily there are a lot of cheaper options for poker chips today that are still higher quality than in years past. Check out various vendors and get to know the types available and various price points. If you see something you like search this forum for reviews or commentary. If you can’t find the answer in an old post ask it. There is a lot of knowledge on this forum about every type of chip available.

Understand though that most of the people here are chip collectors as opposed to people who simply want some nice chips. Like you, I didn’t know people collected entire sets of various casino chips, etc. My interest was and still is primary full custom chips and higher quality pre fab generic chips.

You may want to make your budget known and people will give you suggestions how to best spend it. The poker chip market is far more diverse than I ever imagined before I found this forum! I think it’s best to do a ton of research before you spend any money.

If you want full custom clay chips there is really just one option, CPC. Full custom ceramic chips are cheaper and are available from several manufacturers.

Best advice -- pray for severe head trauma that destroys endorphin reponses triggered by PCAS (poker chip acquisition syndrome).

Welcome! Samples are great to see the variety of materials and molds, but it is also a slippery slope. You see all of the different styles and often don't settle on one. I thought I would, but now I just want them all.

Your future: You quickly start compiling a cash set, then a cali colored cash set, and a tournament set, and then start doodling and designing a CPC set....

Enjoy!

Thanks! It's been fun so far. Not too worried about falling all the way down the rabbit hole -- baby #3 coming, so huge buys aren't really an option.

Regardless, I'm excited to get started. I bought a bunch of samples from @PlaidDragon which should be here today. I think customs are really what I'm interested in, though. Maybe relables.

Oh wait that is my present/future....

Congrats! That definitely helps control the impulse chip buying urges...

Would be interested to hear your thoughts on the sample sets you are receiving.

OR.... it could be an opportunity to buy more chips when the baby is old enough not to choke on them. What better to keep a little one entertained than a plethora of colorful, stack-able objects! Hours of fun! ;)

You joke, but I have 100% allowed my children to chew on my dice chips.
