Heading to Vegas in a week. Realized our airline (though cheap) is hosing us on luggage. The first thought from my buddies was to just go uber minimalist, and just take the free personal item (backpack) and the clothes on our backs. We're going for 4 days, and I'm not sure this will be enough?

In addition to what I'll be wearing, I think this free option would afford me room to pack the basics (toothbrush, razor, socks/underwear, a few t-shirts, an extra pair of pants, phone charger, and possibly my ipad for reading on the plane). However, it won't afford me much extra space. It's also my birthday weekend, so I know my buddies will want to go "out" one evening to celebrate. I'd be nice to have some extra clothes along.

Another buddy (seriously) suggested shipping stuff out UPS, and I laughed... But the more I think about it, this might make sense? I was contemplating the idea of shipping a flat rate box back home (maybe do some harvesting of a couple racks from the flamingo), but my light travel (backpack idea) won't allow space to take out a box/packing tape, etc...

What do people think about the idea of shipping out a LFRB (around $15) with a few extra clothing items/pair of shoes/etc... I'm not sure how this would work, sending it to the hotel (under my name), maybe 2 days before I arrive? Since I was already talking about shipping a box back, this idea would really only cost me an extra $15 to ship the box TO Vegas... And the rates the airline is charging for carry-on and checked bags is going to be around $80-90 total round trip per bag.

I also get that in the grand scheme of things, paying for a bag isn't a huge deal. However, this trip is being done on a shoestring budget (coming 100% out of my BR). My flight and hotel combined are under $300. I'd like to keep costs down. Spending way too much money on travel in the next 3 months, and I'm budget conscious because of it (Wife and I going back to Vegas in Feb, and the entire family going to a Caribbean vacation in March)., coupled with just shelling out $8k for my prop tax bill, I'm admittedly penny pinching.

Advice, suggestions appreciated.

Could you guys take 1 big suitcase, each throw in a set of clothes and then split the cost?
I would be concerned about shipping clothes by USPS.

We've done this with our group, particularly with our bathroom stuff - a couple guys don't want the "hassle" of taking that through security. Plus, it makes room for shooters in your 1 quart bag :) We just toss all of our toiletry stuff in a suitcase along with whatever else will fit. In particular, I toss an extra pair of shoes in the checked bag since a) my feet are big and shoes would take up 80% of my backpack and b) I like to let them air out after a day of walking around. We make sure to keep at least one full change of clothes in each of our carry-on/personal items in case the checked bag gets lost. Hotels will have stuff you need - and there's a Walgreens on the strip (or damn close to it IIRC) if you need something in particular.

What links said.

But my advice is to invest in the best carryon ever made: an Aeronaut from Tom Bihn.

Holds an obscene amount and is carry-on approved. I've packed a week's worth in this bag: toiletries, extra pair shoes, extra pair pants, sweaters, jacket, underwear/socks, shirts, iPad, chargers, etc. I've even had room for a few racks of chips.

Had it for years--absolutely worth the price.

i am thinking about doing the same (also adding a few bottles of booze)
You could just buck up and wear 3-4 shirts and 3-4 pairs of underwear and socks on the trip there and back to save room in your bag. Would suck balls, but you definitely wouldnt need a jacket.

I'm a huge fan of the minimalist approach. Even when I traveled to Colombia, Panama, Philippines, etc, I just brought a carry on sized backpack with me. You'd be surprised how little you can get by on and how much you probably don't need.

Yup, I think my game plan is to use a medium sized backpack. Sounds like Spirit Airlines is somewhat lenient with "personal" items. Some essentials, toothpaste, toothbrush, razor, spare outfit, ipad (and charger), and I think I'll be set.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will skip the harvesting idea. :)

I've brought two backpacks onto Spirit a few times. Never had any issues.

I like the idea of everyone sharing one checked bag, allows for those extra things you might need, like shoes when some drunk pours a whole beer on your feet. I understand going on the cheap, but you can either bring enough underwear, or run with skid marks. I'd rather spend the extra and fly another airline that does not gouge for carry on, or go with the group checked bag and share the cost. I would shy away from shipping, no telling where it will go. One time I had something dropped off at the bell desk, and it took an hour for the bell to find it when I went to pick it up. I actually had to go behind the scenes to help look for my package, only for it to be sitting at the bell desk the whole time. Needless to say, I have little faith in others, and carry on is my choice for travel. I suppose you could roll up t-shirts, socks/underwear, shorts, etc. and stuff them in your jacket, buy a toothbrush at the 27 Walgreen/CVS drugstores on the strip if you can't find room for it in your pocket.

I am at the point in my life that I don't share a room, I don't drink rot gut, and I pack too much. Call me a snob or whatever, I like to have a good time and not sweat the small stuff. I am not saying get a charter flight, limo, and penthouse, but I am not riding the greyhound bus to Vegas and staying at the Super 8 at Ellis Island for $28 a night. If that was all I could afford, then it would be fabulous. If you enjoy doing that, then great for you. My vacation time is precious to me, I don't want to waste 2 hours and $100+ looking for a new pair of shoes when I could have packed a 2nd pair. I have sights to see, drinks to drink, and games to play, not searching for mouthwash or waiting for roomie to finish in the crapper so I can shower.

Have a great trip and post your TR,

BiGGyT

Be aware that while Spirit pretty much does not care what you carry on, if you do not pay for a carry on, you may be asked to put your backpack under the seat in front of you. Fortunately, since almost no-one pays for a carry on there is usually tons of space in the overhead bins and they will let you put it overhead. I always go Spirit to Vegas and about 75% of the time I've been ok to put my backpack overhead but there have been trips when I've been told to put it underneath. YMMV

Here's my 2+2 trip report/blog from last year. Lots of chip pics and shenanigans. Read if you're interested, don't if you're not. :)

All I got out of that was, Rhino, Cruela, and all the other posters calling you weak for not jamming set of 3s. That and you spent a lot of time at Flamingo. I agree, Bally's PR is not optimal. I am surprised you did the $20 trick, more that it helped. Grats on leaving up, always an accomplishment to be celebrated. I assume you enjoy the craft beer style, check out TAG sports bar at the Linq, lots-o-beers for players, stick a $20 in the video poker, kick back and have a few good brews.

More pics of stacks and racks please, I need to live vicariously through others. ;)

Yup, in hindsight, that fold with a set was horrible. However, I couldn't even see straight... Love me some good beers, and my buddy and I did hit the PH video poker machines to "beer up" :)

My buddies and I will be documenting it all via a secret FB group. I'll be sure to pull pics, etc.. and do a proper TR once I get back. :) Going with a couple other chippers, and meeting up with another chipper, and we'll celebrate my bday somewhere in between the gambol... so there will be loads of debauchery to share (and some that we might not want to). ;)

Yep, that's me... I cringe at the thought of sharing a hotel room with anyone other than my kids or an insignificant other. Given the choice between bunking up for free or paying for my own, I'm getting my own room.

Where you staying? I'm at the Flamingo. Maybe hook up for a drink if you're in the neighborhood. Too bad Tri leaves just before we're out there....good luck to you Tri!
Im at treasure island i think. staying with some friends who get rooms comped all over. They will go for like 2 weeks 2-3 nights in different hotels.
I might be downtown the 15th, all the rest is on the strip.

Yeah that would be rad if we linked up. I kinda want to go to spinettis on sat morning. Se

When at the Rio last Summer, Tommy/Redbelly sent Mrs Zombie and I a couple of Redbelly/PCF shirts. When we went to pick them up, the hotel charged us a "handling fee". You would also be faced with trying to re-pack your clothes to ship them back, which could possibly mean other expenses/challenges.

Unless you intend to stay inside the entire time, the weather next week involved lows of 32 degrees. Might want to consider a jacket anyway.

LOL... We're all missing each other by hours.. I'm also at the Flamingo.

However, I'll be hooking up (in a poker sense) with @NiceShot who is taking a trip with the mrs the exact same days I'm there. Hopefully he can tuck Mrs. Shot away at a nice spa for a few hours while we degen it up somewhere :)

Havent checked the weather yet. I wear those 32degree thermal shirts. I can wear two and a long sleeve tshirt and be outside when its 30-40 degrees no problem.
They are super thin and weigh nothing. Can roll them up smaller than a sock. Costco $6.99
