Hi guys

My wife and I are taking a vacation to Las Vegas in April. Now I have been looking to replace my cheap plastic poker chips for sometime now, and was looking to buy them while I was in Vegas. So I was wondering what my options were?

I have found two stores online, Spinettis and the Gamblers General Store. Looking at the websites both seem to stock an abundance of cheap chip sets for the holiday maker to take home as souvenirs and also some casino used Paulson (very tempting!), but I am looking at something like the Majestics, Milanos or some decent ceramics like the Asconas, Scrolls Valentinos etc. Does anyone know if either of the stores stock these midrange type chips?

If anyone has visited either of these stores and could advise I would be extremely gratefull.

Thanks in advance.

Josh @Apache has a lot of chips and will meet with you in person at your hotel to hand you over the chips

^^^ This is the only way you're going to get the chips you mentioned. You will want to determine which chips and how many of each denom you want beforehand.

Check out josh @Apache he's in Vegas

And apparently Apache is expecting a restock of their Majestics and Majestic blanks sometime in early March, so you could be at the right time to get a nice set at a nice price if you're leaning toward a China Clay. Better take a good look at the website and try to organize things in advance so that when vacation time rolls around, everything is set.

IMO, use the time in Vegas to have fun. I wouild included a stop at spinnetti's just to browse and see what you like. Getting 500+ chips home in carryon isd a pain so think about buying after the trip and shipping to your door. Well, unless you live in the UK, then pack an extra bag.

Spinettis keeps most of their chips off site. Probably in a vault somewhere.

I was not looking for exactly the same thing as you. (I was going to pick up 2 racks of New China Club TRK's) It is possible they have some sets on the shelves, but I would call first before you take the trip to the store.

First of all thanks to all for the positive replies, it's not easy being a chip virgin!

I have checked out the Apache website and that option does look like my best bet at the moment. The Milano's and the Majestics were on my hit list, but since looking at the website I also like the look of the china clay Pharaohs and the Dunes now. I was also considering ceramics and see that he does the Scrolls which also look good. Truth is I want them all but that just ain't going to happen:(. I still think I am possibly leaning towards the Milano's but does anyone have any experience of the Dunes or Pharaohs, is the quality better than the Majestics or Milano's?

Don't worry BiGGyT, I am determined to enjoy every second in Vegas, and if Apache are able to deliver to the Luxor that will save me going on a chip hunt. Although I still may be tempted to pop into Spinettis for a gander. Your are right about lugging chips back in my carry on, but I would rather do that pay around 70 quid plus ridiculous taxes for delivery to the UK. I haven't told the wife yet but I am planning to bung 250 chips into her carryon:D. Unfortunately for us poker lovers in the UK, after we take postage etc into account, there is no such thing as quality affordable chips!

Thanks you all again for your comments, and any views on the Pharaohs or Dunes would be gratefully received.

If you're thinking about China Clays, you tend to be better off with now with Dunes, Pharaohs or Majestics rather than Milanos. See @Hobbyphilic video on Youtube about this:

In my opinion of all the China Clays Dunes are #1. I really like Vegas so that theme clicks with me. Also strictly from an aesthetic point of view I think Dunes look best.

Of all the China Clays I would go with the new Dunes if I was going to buy.

But if it is in you budget I’d rather have the hybrid ceramics any day.

Every China Clay set I have played with starts to deteriate after a few years and it happens even faster if they get used often. Big chunks and lots of flaking. I haven’t used the new Dunes to know if they will as well, but they aren’t aren’t that old yet either.

Good luck with the hunt.

Sorry to show my ignorance but i am very new to all this, but you used the term "hybrid ceramic". Is a hybrid ceramic different to a standard ceramic or is it the same thing?

This sounds like fun. Just enjoy the show and find something you like.

Let us know how it went and what you thought of the retail locations.

Those ascona' s look quite classy! I googled hybrids and also found a company doing the Rounders copies in ceramic and hybrid. The hybrids are more expensive which puzzles me slightly. I would have thought a chip with an embossed centre would be better than one with a sticker? What is the advantage of a ceramic with a recessed inlay?

The normal ceramics are completely flat; because the hybrids have a recessed 'inlay', the chips look and feel more like classic poker chips. I have a set of the Asconas and they are really nice; they feel and look great. The biggest difference with clay chips is of course the sound. There is also a significant difference there between normal ceramics and hybrids. You can easily find videos that do sound comparisons, if you want to have an idea of what the difference is.

Also keep in mind that you can purchase a set from the classifieds here and have the seller ship to the Vegas hotel you are staying at. There is a small amount of risk (Resort losing the package) but I am 99.95% sure, all would end perfectly and you get to avoid all those annoying taxes!

I have the new Dunes CC and I really doubt they will flake. They seem pretty solid and cohesive in their construction. With normal home use I think they should do fine (of course remains to be seen).

Having said that I do agree that the hybrid ceramics probably do look/feel better.

Just been checking out all things ceramic at the moment.

I had almost made up my mind that I should go for china clays, but now looking at some of your comments I am seriously looking at ceramics. One chip that has taken my fancy regarding aethetics is the semi custom Valentino's. Has anyone of you handled any of these chips, if so what are they like?

I got myself a sample set of the Valentinos; personally I do miss the feel of an inlay, but other than that they are really nice. Plus, there's that semi-custom element there which is REALLY cool of course. Like everyone here always says: get yourself some samples! ;)

If you are in Vegas you need to stop by Spenetti's just to say you have been. I only get to Vegas about every other year and spend half a day just looking through everything.

Tried to find it a few years back. Gave up,

Hi,

What I did last year when cruising the 66 is to liaise with Josh from @Apache Poker Chips. I ordered by phone (when I was still in Europe) and we met at the Flamingo Poker room for the transaction. Just had to call him the day before to confirm.

Of course you'll have to pay the delivery but it's better than shipping to Europe. And it's also nice to meet members from the forum.

I ordered a Dunes China Clay set (+ some extra chips in case of lost, damage, ...) which I completed with a "Dunes" case from Spinettis.
