I was recently surprised to learn that many home games in my area set a max buy-in at 40x the big blind. Is that typical? I'm much more accustomed to 100x BB as the maximum buy-in.

40 min 100-200 max (100 for purely social/friendly game)

If 40bb is the max and the game doesn’t turn into a shove fest (which with stacks that low it should) than the game should lower its blinds and keep the same max $ buy in. Game will retain the same affordability aspect while opening up play to a more “normal” feel.

We have always been 50-150 bb playing 1/2. We had a player come last night and buy in for only 50 bb ($100) and go bust and leave after only playing for 1 1/2 hours. Because of this, we are upping the minimum to 100 bb or $200. You can’t have players buying in short and leaving after 1 1/2 hours.

Never seen that. Most of the home games in my area are uncapped. My game personally is minimum 80bb and maximum 240bb ($20-60, 25c/25c).

Well, I'm going to play with these guys for the first time later this month. We'll see how it goes. Maybe I can convince them that raising the buy-in would be good for the game.

The deeper the better if everyone have same bankroll. Otherwise 100 to 200 bb. Rebuys up to half of biggest stack on the table.

We play .25/.50 for our regular games and we do $20min-$100max to start and 1/2 the big stack after a couple hours.

.25/.50 with $50 buy in (100bb).

Later in the night when people start busting there are no rules. If someone wants to buy back in for $5 I'm not gonna stop them. It's much better than them sitting out, imo.

If variable, I would say 75-80BB minimum, and 120-150BB maximum.
I tend to prefer a standard invariable (both min and max) of 100BB for everybody, with eventual maximum at half the big stack.

Have they been playing this way for a while? Don’t expect to walk in and convince them they’ve been doing it wrong forever. That’s a sure fire way to not be invited back. If the game is lame, don’t go back. You may find that it is fishy and profitable... and enjoyable just the way it is.

40x BB is "Arena poker."

It's a much smaller field of play in the sense more pots will be all in early in the hand.

I personally consider 80-150 to be normal and 150+ to be "deep."

I see 200bb games are popular on PCF.

100min no max where people rebuy for 400bb is more fun... with the occasional tilting guy that rebuys for 1000bb trying to get unstuck... I like degen games like this. :D

I get the impression that these are relatively inexperienced players that are intimidated by no-limit. Capping the buy-in at $20 means they can't lose more than that in just one hand. I'm curious to find out if it's going to turn into an all-in festival for the first hour.
