Wow, situation developing, but the game I was in JUST got robbed at gunpoint...

Tourney and 2 cash games going at a nearby bar. 73 tourney entries, I was chip leader but took a couple bad beats to finish in 4th place. I decide to skip the juicy cash games, and head home. Minutes after I left, apparently some guys with guns run into the place and steal a couple of cash bags, run out...

Everyone was ok. I'm learning more details as players are messaging me what happened... Just crazy! Never so glad to finish 4th in a tourney.

Geez, glad you're ok. Any idea if it was a losing player who did it? Also, just curious if the game is legal, and if not, were the cops called?

I was told that there was a spotter who came in and asked for a seat at the cash game, but was told there weren't any seats currently open. They leave, and 30 seconds later, a couple of guys rush in with guns out, and the majority of the players dive under the tables. They made off with two cash bags (including the tourney payouts for 3rd, 2nd, and 1st - probably $1600 still in the prize pool). I got 300 for 4th place, and disappointed at my finish, until I got home and my phone started blowing up...

I was told the cops were called, but poker in WI is not legal, unless it's in s casino..

Apparently, I'll be hosting cards more often now...

Wow lucky break. P* home games are much safer. Unless Dan robs us to pay for more chips.

There's gamblin' and carousin' in them thar saloons up'a north! Glad you made it out ahead of all the drama and nobody was hurt. Legal or not this is one reason I've always stuck to home games among family and close friends.

yikes. there was an area home game that got robbed not too long ago as well. makes me wonder how many of these are going un-reported because people don't want to get in trouble for hosting "illegal" games.

i guess i'm glad i limit my invite list to only my closest of friends and none of this friend of a friend of a friend's cousin type business.

Too bad several of the players weren't packing heat. I have heard a number of claims about the benefits of having well armed amateurs ready, able and willing to be the "first responder" if needed. I'd like some data about how well that works in the real world.

On the other hand, everyone ended up uninjured suffering nothing worse than a modest financial loss. In the end that might have been the best case outcome given the situation -=- DrStrange

I was robbed at the Shootout at the Post meatup event. Playing Dramaha and I had flopped top set (da nutz!) plus pulled two pair in the hole and still got scooped for my stack! Everyone be on the lookout for @bentax1978 last seen stacking my chips. He is flush with cash and ready to gamble, if you see him, do not, I repeat, DO NOT, agree to flip quarters for hundos!

Probably because you can't have guns in bars, law abiding citizens know that(y) :thumbsup:. And plenty of data on self defense if you care to look.

What is interesting is the bar doesn't any security of its own

Ya, that area home game was actually run more like a business... With a sit-fee, lots of money on the table, and held weekly in the same location. Not surprising that it was robbed.

At the time, I considered the feasibility of a similar robbery occurring at this Wednesday bar tourney I frequent, and I ruled it out. Too many people, video surveillance, etc... However, the robbers last night did things slightly differently (didn't require everyone to empty pockets, jewelry, etc...). It was a quick grab and go (with the cash bags).

Just a shame for local poker... This will drive people underground more, or kill local action. Currently, there's a local bar game (if not 3) on every night of the week. Most are well run (and typically safe). Madison has been seeing a huge uptick in crime these last few months. Many elements from Chicago are moving in, and we've had a big upswing in gun violence (shootings). These douchebags see local poker as an opportunity, and don't care about the ramifications (above the couple grand they might score).

Lot of wisdom in how links handles his game invites. I'm very anal about this as well. You don't get an invite to my game if you're unvetted (solidly).

Rarely do we get new people, but my general rule is you can vouch for someone IF

#1, you're a regular to my game
#2, you know my expectations (no douchebags or scrubs)
#3, You can tell me about this person in detail (what they do for a living, what they're like)

I had a trusted regular vouch for a guy (very strong recommendation), and this guy was locked to play. The guy messages me last minute and asks if he can bring his best friend to play (and assures me he's solid, trusty, etc..). Then says if his buddy can't play, he won't be able to make it either... That player has not been invited back.

I'm not in the least bit worried about my game getting robbed. Too low stakes to make it worthwhile, and typically 25% of my players are cops, lol... :)

I'm very pro-2nd A, but shooting a person robbing you would suck on so many levels (if we're talking real world here). I'd NEVER shoot someone robbing a game, unless they were shooting first. For starters, it sucks to lose $400 (or whatever you've bought in for), but the second you pull that trigger, you may as well kiss a few thousand dollars goodbye. The legal fees alone have the potential to bankrupt you. Not to mention having your name (and poker in general) dragged through the mud in local media...

I have a police friend who was working a side job as a security officer in Milwaukee, and he got into a gunfight with an armed robber, shot the guy dead... Obv, the family sued, and he had to take a 2nd mortgage on his home because the atty wanted a huge retainer, and the legal fees quickly climbed north of $40k. Defend your life (gun good), defending your property (gun bad).

OK, I'm going to refrain from posting on this until I've had more sleep...

Didn't get to bed until 3am, had to be up at 6am to gets kids off to school...ugh... Probably not thinking/posting my thoughts clearly.

Bubbled and missed out on having a decent story to tell - double sucky!! ;)

Glad no-one was hurt.

I've been present when this happened in a game. Definitely an unsettling situation. Glad everyone is safe!

Probably because you can't have guns in bars, law abiding citizens know that(y) :thumbsup:.

In New Hampshire you can open carry anywhere, without a license, including bars. The only exception is you cannot carry into a courthouse, and you must have a license if you bring a gun into a car. But you can walk right into a bar with an open gun, including long guns. Live Free or Die lol.

This sucks. Glad everyone is ok.

Tri you're probably the prime suspect having left conveniently just before it happened haha! Did you see anything sketchy when you left? Hopefully they can find video footage.

Hmmm. Sounds fishy to me...
  • You were chip leader, but a couple convenient "bad beats" knocked you out in 4th;
  • You left even though a "juicy" cash game was going;
  • Conveniently, minutes after you left, the place gets robbed;
  • You post all about it on PCF almost immediately after it happened.
I'm no Nancy Drew, but I'd like you as a prime suspect. As we all know, you apparently are a beast at the tourney table (unless someone molests your chip protector :whistle: :whistling:). So once you had the chip lead, a fait accompli, this set of facts suggests that you intentionally took a dive on two hands, making it look like you suffered a couple bad beats, because you knew what time the heist was going down. You left and gave the all-clear to your fellow conspirators, who then jacked the place for a quick hit-and-run. You even posted about it promptly and innocently, thereby establishing a credible alibi.

Highly suspect.

Didn't they pass a bill last year to allow guns to be carried in the state house during legislative session. Hopefully courtrooms aren't too far off.

In all honesty, isn't there a case to be made for redistributing your $400 to the first 3 finishers? I'm just asking, I guess it depends on whether the game will still go and how friendly you are with the folks that were going to finish 1-3.

They just released a surveillance photo of the suspect and his get away vehicle. I am no Nancy Drew either, but I think we've solved this one.

Probably my 3 hours of sleep, but considering that several of my good friends were robbed at gunpoint a few hours ago, this post seems "highly" douchey.

And I get that you were trying to be funny... Once I sleep and re-read this, I might find it funny, who knows.
