yikes. there was an area home game that got robbed not too long ago as well. makes me wonder how many of these are going un-reported because people don't want to get in trouble for hosting "illegal" games.
i guess i'm glad i limit my invite list to only my closest of friends and none of this friend of a friend of a friend's cousin type business.
Ya, that area home game was actually run more like a business... With a sit-fee, lots of money on the table, and held weekly in the same location. Not surprising that it was robbed.
At the time, I considered the feasibility of a similar robbery occurring at this Wednesday bar tourney I frequent, and I ruled it out. Too many people, video surveillance, etc... However, the robbers last night did things slightly differently (didn't require everyone to empty pockets, jewelry, etc...). It was a quick grab and go (with the cash bags).
Just a shame for local poker... This will drive people underground more, or kill local action. Currently, there's a local bar game (if not 3) on every night of the week. Most are well run (and typically safe). Madison has been seeing a huge uptick in crime these last few months. Many elements from Chicago are moving in, and we've had a big upswing in gun violence (shootings). These douchebags see local poker as an opportunity, and don't care about the ramifications (above the couple grand they might score).
Lot of wisdom in how links handles his game invites. I'm very anal about this as well. You don't get an invite to my game if you're unvetted (solidly).
Rarely do we get new people, but my general rule is you can vouch for someone IF
#1, you're a regular to my game
#2, you know my expectations (no douchebags or scrubs)
#3, You can tell me about this person in detail (what they do for a living, what they're like)
I had a trusted regular vouch for a guy (very strong recommendation), and this guy was locked to play. The guy messages me last minute and asks if he can bring his best friend to play (and assures me he's solid, trusty, etc..). Then says if his buddy can't play, he won't be able to make it either... That player has not been invited back.
I'm not in the least bit worried about my game getting robbed. Too low stakes to make it worthwhile, and typically 25% of my players are cops, lol...
