Big News !! I believe that Gemaco is pronounced with a long A, like "gem AAY co"

I found this example of a card from a Gemaco deck, and note that it has the "long" accent over the A:

A google image search for Gemaco Cards shows the long-A accent in most (but not all) of their jokers and card boxes.

@Tommy Since Jim tagged this thread in his TCR sale thread, I thought I would ask a couple of questions,

How do these compare in feel to the other "premium" plastic chips like Abbiati and Matsui?

I saw the comment about being soft and stacking well. Does that mean you consider them in the same category, quality wise?

How easy/difficult are they to murder? Thinking about making snappers into fracs.

How much do chips like these wear? Just wondering if when cleaned up, if the used primaries and the new secondaries would play well together.

I had sampled / owned both this Aura Gemaco Line and OPUS casino Gemaco Line. And they felt very differently from each another

I had some of those radisson arubas - just a couple of stacks to sample. I liked them and they seemed very playable to me, for plastics. I only have a couple left, and I can’t tell you if they’re exactly the same as these Tropicanas, but I can tell you for sure that they’re not 13g. Though they are magnetic, fwiw.

After seeing and handling various Gemaco chips, I believe they offered two different finish levels and edge sharpness.

IMO, the Trops are similar to the Black Diamond chips. The Aruba chips are similar to the Opus chips.

So Tommy sent me a shuffle stack of these to check out a while back so I can speak to at least the feel of the chips. IMO these definitely feel the cheapest of all the plastic chips I’ve tried. The edges are very square and they are indeed soft - to the point that hard knocks on the edges could easily put a dent in them. I have plastic chips from a ton of manufacturers, including other Gemaco chips (opus and Aruba) and these aren’t the same. They did stack better than most plastics. I would say, for the price (which is cheaper than a China clay) they are a great buy, but they are definitely a few rungs below Matsui, Abbiatti, etc.

Is there any recess, or enough of a recess where the inlay is that an over-label could be placed without affecting how the chips stack?

I doubt that there is room for an over label, but several others have stated that these are easy to murder.

Are the damage on the primaries mostly on the labels and not on edge/body of the chips? Trying to decide between buying used primaries or new secondaries from the TCR BF sale. Just wondering, in addition to possibly needing to replace the labels, if some of the primary chips will be worse for wear and have to be sorted out.

I waffled over the same question. Certainly I would have preferred the new chips, and the extra cost is not really an issue. But did you look at all the pics in post #1? I went by those and the ones that Jim posted, and decided to go with the primaries. I get the feeling they are in good shape other than some of the labels. There are several stack pics of the $5s, which tend to get the most wear in casinos. They look pretty good, and others that have some of these haven't mentioned any excessive wear issues.

I picked the primaries because I like the spot designs and colors much better, except for the $25, which I think is pretty boring. Which is okay, because I like having a $20 chip instead of a $25, and I love the $500. I think it will make a great $20, and the snapper will make a great frac. I'm going to murder and relabel those two, along with any of the $5s and $1s that are in bad shape. I think I'm going to give Sticker Mule a shot for these to keep the budget down.

If you’ve bought labels from @Gear or other places, do the labels in these chips feel like pretty standard non-textured laminated labels?

Just wondering if I relabel the snappers to a frac if they’d handle or feel to different when in use with other denoms w/original labels.

Also does the recess after removing the label seem to be about the same depth as a murdered clay chip? It’s hard to tell from the pic in the OP but it seems shallower.

The recess appeared to be the same as the Opus chips. They have a matte finish label. The good thing about getting labels from @Gear is that he will know which material thickness to use to make the labels and is very good at color matching. If he doesn't have that type of chip on hand, send him a sample chip and he will send it back with the labels.

Thanks for the quick response, @Tommy. I’d be making my own laminated labels and at I’d say they compare reasonably well to @Gear ’s untextured laminated labels, at least on cursory glance/feel (I’m sure @Gear’s quality/consistency is way ahead or my homemade jobs).

Combined the glossy vinyl sticker and matte laminate should be ~8 mil and hasn’t been any issues with the labels being too thick on any clay or China clay chips I’ve relabeled (not over labeled), but I’ve never tried to relabel plastic chips before from Gemaco (or any other manufacturer that makes plastic chips for casinos).
