I have been using the terms "tray" and "rack" mostly interchangeably in reference to their use with poker chips.

Is there a difference?

I am thinking that there may be some industry definition but I haven't found it.

I generally use "rack" when filled and "tray" when empty but I don't know why. e.g. "I am going to buy a rack of chips" or "I am getting a tray so I can cash out."

I also maybe think a "tray" might be a more flexible definition where very large capacities are possible like a "dealer's tray" for example.

What do you use?

Trey is between a deuce and a sailboat when drawing to the wheel.

I use rack, whether I'm talking about 100 chips in a plastic holder or I'm talking about empty plastic holders to move chips from table to table.

And I really only use tray for plastic holder that is capable of storing larger quantities like the dealer tray that @Sprouty mentions.

Rack can have many meanings when it comes to chips. Besides a rack being 100 chips & also the plastic tray that hold chips, all the chips that a casino has in inventory is sometimes referred to as that casino's rack (ie: XYZ casino is rebranding and will be replacing their rack).

this has been your daily useless trivia..... :)
