Later in the year I'm going to be helping run a charity tournament thing. I did this last year and we used a bunch of tables that were not standard US sizes. The surfaces were very hard to so folks were spilling stacks all night and it was really hard to pick the cards up. Bringing in tables is not an option. What kind of material would you use to make a an improvised topper? I'm thinking of some sort of thin neoprene?

I use a pre-made table for poker, which feels like it is made from felt, but I can say that neoprene mats work very well for my board game hobby. Just bear in mind that neoprene comes in multiple forms. Often is has another materiel such as cloth or nylon on top which can make it work as a table topper on its own. But if the material is more like plain rubber you'll need to cover it with a fabric such as felt or speedcloth (though others may work as well).
