I think there are different ways to make a game ‘good enough to warrant tips’, and having enough chips on hand is one way, there are several other factors, and reducing a home game down to just one of the factors and ignoring the others, I don’t think is accurate.
I know this seems like a small detail, but it just seems like something that's too easy to get right. The simplest thing is to make the needed chips available.

We have 2 racks of $1’s in play. About one rack with the initial buy-in and a second to go with $5’s for rebuys. We play .20/.20

I just recently joined the “you can build a great set and not need 1000 chips” movement.

Couldn't disagree more with this take. It is tacky as hell to keep tips in view. Thank the player, pocket it (or ideally drop box it) and move on.

It's pretty standard in my experience for the dealer to keep a stack of little stuff next to the drop slot, and only drop after coloring up.
