As I posted in other threads, we have just paid off our house. The next Zombie Poker Club event will be the first where we weren't sending off over $1000 to the bank.

So we're giving our players a chance to take it home.

If anyone loses with a Full House to something better than a Full House (quads, straight flush) The losing player will receive 40% of our former mortgage payment. The winner of the hand will get 20% of the payment. Everyone left in the house at the end of the night will get an equal share of the remaining 40%.

The plan is to run it like any casino Bad Beat. No discussing hands is obvious. Since this is a tournament, I was thinking a minimum of 10 BB must be in the pot (to avoid everyone just checking through every hand just to try to get the Bad Beat). Because the bonus is so large, I'm wondering if there are any other rules @Mrs Poker Zombie and I should implement to avoid allowing the bonus to alter the play of the game.

By the way, the buy-in is the same as any other night - $20, which covers dinner. We expect @Ben and @Jonesey07 to be in attendance, but would not refuse admission to other PCF'ers that I already know.

Are you going to require the use of both hole cards from both players to qualify? If so, make sure to state that up front.

We were thinking about that to avoid a whole table playing a boated board against a quadded hand (thereby giving them a relatively small portion of the bonus), but at the same time we don't want to make the bonus nearly unachievable.

Maybe 1 hole card must play?

A BBJ can and probably would affect play, just as it does in cash games -- maybe even moreso when the BBJ is so large compared to the buy-in.

There are other ways to "spread the wealth," such as increasing the prize pool and paying more places, or doing a freeroll.

How generous of you to want to share this with your group! (y)

The odds of quads or better over a boat are very slim already.

I played in a game that had a bad beat bonus for any full house losing but required both hole cards to be used and it would take weeks to hit most of the time. The most common way it was hit was when two people had pocket pairs and trips hit the board and even that didn’t happen often.

It is an awesome free roll no matter how you do it, but do you want for it to have an okay chance of hitting ie. Boat over Boat using 2 hole cards or much harder of quads over boat, even if using just 1 hole card?

In prior Bad Beat events (the bonus changes from event to event) Boats losing has come up twice in 10 events. We record the losing hand, but not the winning hand, so I cannot say what AAATT lost to, but the other was AAAKK losing - which had to be quads or better. We also saw quads beat a boat in our sister groups event a couple weeks ago.

However, those events did not require hole cards to play.

Very generous and very hard to manage because you’re changing the game with a huge bonus far bigger than the stakes. Play will change to try and win the bonus - even play changed with a bounty worth $30 in my game - I can’t imagine what it would be like if the bonus was as high as yours!

Either make it a free roll or give the prize to the winner (or 70/30 1st/2nd)

@Poker Zombie is this jack pot going to be offered until it hits or only for this game as a one time chance?

If it is only for this game I wouldn’t worry about people playing differently. Even at a casino when a B.B. gets very it changes how people play every pocket pair and suited connector, at least preflop.

It will be a one night only opportunity. I have no doubt that by this time next month, that "extra" money will be "needed" for something else.

I would donate half the amount to a meaningful charity of my choice - maybe for children without homes at all.
I would make another quarter of the sum my BBJ and, with the remaining quarter, probably offer a free starting stack to the first person to RSVP, for a series of games to come.
My 2c about $1K:)

Host a tournament where the winner gets to go to a meet-up with you in Iceland.

Jokes aside I would start by analysing my game. Is there anything that I can buy to improve it. If not I would make 5 bad beat pots of 200each rather than one bigger.

It’s not too generous, it’s a very cool gesture. And I’d have zero problem taking your mortgage payment. I also can’t see it affecting the way I’d play at all.

IAnd it’s also nearly unobtainable. Since boat over boat doesn’t qualify, the chances of somebody hitting it with one card or two are extremely slim.

My 2 cents...
If you want to give back to your players, hire a massage person to come in for the night, and use the rest of the $ to improve the overall experience...they'll remember and appreciate that far more than a one time payoff.

I would need a bigger room. There is a very good reason I was able to pay off the house early. Living modestly has it's advantages - and drawbacks.

Another option is to do a bunch of splashed pot prizes. Buy a bunch of $20 gift cards and scratch off lotto tickets and throw one into the pot every 30 minutes.

Zombie can speak for himself, but it doesn’t sound like he’s looking to give money away. But putting a grand on the line, just in case the stars align and something crazy happens, well that would make for an exciting night.

Wow that's awesome

Congrats on paying off the house, it is a great feeling I hope to have again soon. I would rather see you all reward yourselves than players, unless they are the reason the house got paid off then maybe giving a little back is good. Just concerned that you may be setting a precedent that will be expected rather than appreciated. Also, make sure you fully funded your retirement accounts for the year before other expenditures.

Happy for you both,
BiGGyT

We follow the Native American tradition that says when one hunter does extremely well, the whole village eats well that night. Paying off the house was our giant buffalo. To celebrate it with our friends is our way - which admittedly isn't typical in today's America.

As far precedent - I don't think that's going to happen. Our players are more friends than degens. Now if other players do a similar "mortgage burning" party and share the wealth with their friends, who knows... maybe we'll start a new tradition where the world becomes a better place.

And retirement... yeah, that's where the vast majority of the mortgage payments will be going in the future. Not sexy, but "saving" is rarely considered as such.

Very cool. I think it’s worthwhile splurge on thoughts rare opportunities in life. My dad started a tradition of buying a new watch when we started a new job with his first paycheck and that’s something that I have adopted as well. Awesome way to make an exciting night for your players for that opportunity to hit it big....what are you going to buy if you win the jackpot?

what are you going to buy if you win the jackpot?

All our poker money is held in an account for "entertainment", so my share of any winnings goes into that fund which buys food for poker nights, as well as sports tickets, quick get-a-way trips to Tunica, Evansville, or wherever, concerts, and the like.
