Why is there a different tiny white symbol on the higher-denomination Horseshoe chips? On the HSI primaries there's a triangle, asterisk, star, fleur de lis, etc., but the exact same symbols are also on the $25+ Clevelands and Cincinnatis. Nothing on the HSI secondaries though. Is this for the eye in the sky to tell the chips apart?

^Exactly. Pretty sure that Indiana and Ohio gaming regulations require a "unique shape" on each denomination value check, which apparently can be complied with by either using a uniquely shaped inlay or an inlay with a unique shape appearing on it.

Several other states have similar requirements (New Jersey, Mississippi, Misouri, etc.).... but not Nevada or California.

New Jersey regs cite it for 'clear identification' purposes.

Remember - gaming regulations change slowly, and gaming regulators work closely together when new jurisdictions come on line.

Based on this, I guess is that these rules initially came into place when cameras were black and white, and thus the shaped inlay provided a means for the camera to capture different denominations.
